History
Eitri is the king of the Dwarves of Nidavellir, a race of blacksmiths and allies of Asgard. When the Bifrost bridge was destroyed, the Rock Trolls attacked Nidavellir. Using the power of the Tesseract, Heimdall was able to build the bridge and aid the realm. The Rock Trolls were defeated by the Asgardians.[1]
Later on, the realm came under attack from the forces of Thanos, the Mad Titan, who forced Eitri to forge the Infinity Gauntlet, an artifact capable of wielding the power of the Infinity Stones. Thanos had every Dwarf except for Eitri killed, and the blacksmith's hands were welded closed so that he couldn't build anything to stop Thanos' plans. Following the massacre, the neutron star at Nidavellir's core burnt itself of all its energy, leaving the entire station and its forges to be frozen shut.
Years later, Thor, Rocket and Groot traveled to Nidavellir with the intention to enlist Eitri's help in forging a weapon to kill Thanos, and were shocked to find the state of the realm. With the help of Rocket, Thor managed to get the forges started again by jump-starting the rings surrounding the star. Despite his maimed hands, Eitri was capable of making a brand new axe for Thor called Stormbreaker, but was unable to give it a handle. Groot intertwined his arm with the two halves of the weapon, holding them together and cutting his limb to turn it into a handle. Afterwards, Thor and his allies left.[2]Notes
