Speaking with Kate

According to Susan, Eleanor was often jet setting around the world "trying to save it",[4] but in reality Derek and Eleanor were involved in multiple shady business deals, cover ups, and murders.[5] Before her purported death, Derek and Eleanor's marriage became strained. At one point, Eleanor even tried to secretly take Kate from a summer camp to run away with her before being caught by Derek.[6][7] Much to Kate's displeasure, Eleanor started having a secret affair. However, when Kate confronted her mother about her behavior, Eleanor simply told her that "it's complicated" and "she'll understand when she's older".[8]

While visiting Boulder, Colorado, Eleanor was almost killed by a scheme of Derek.[9][2] Instead, Eleanor became a "half-vampire" retaining some portion of her soul. Believing that it would be better for her daughters to believe she was dead until she could find a cure for her vampirism, Eleanor remained hidden while she planned to take revenge on Derek.[2]

With promises to cure her vampirism and make Derek pay, Eleanor began working with Madame Masque in Los Angeles.[10][11][2]

Years later Kate began investigating her mother's death when several clues began to point at her own father as a potential murderer.[12] However, before Kate could properly start her investigation, she was pulled into feud between Clint Barton and Eden Vale. After kidnapping her, Eden even promised to bring back Eleanor if Kate helped her kill Clint.[13] Eden even temporarily pulled Eleanor from the past to prove to Kate that she could bring her back.[8]

Unhappy with Kate Bishop reforming the West Coast Avengers, Madame Masque founded the West Coast Masters of Evil with Eel, Lady Bullseye, Satana, M.O.D.O.K., Graviton, and Derek Bishop.[14] To destroy the West Coast Avengers, Madame Masque lured them into an abandoned amusement park were she was able to trap them. However, Eleanor revealed herself to be alive to Kate to save her.[15] Eleanor was able to get Kate out of the trap, but Kate refused to leave her teammates behind and instead left her mother.[16]

Eleanor feeding on America Chavez

When Marvel Boy tipped off the West Coast Avengers to potential Skrull activity at the Temple of the Shifting Sun, the team went to investigate. Instead of Skrulls the WCA found a centuries old coven of vampires working with Madame Masque and devoted to the idea that the blood of some prophesied chosen one would allow them to become "daywalkers".[17] Although Eleanor initially tried to save Kate again, she revealed herself to be half-vampire when she fed on America Chavez, the "chosen one" from the legends of Temple of the Shifting Sun. Madame Masque had actually started working with Temple of the Shifting Sun because she believed that held a possible cure for Eleanor's vampirism. Disgusted to learn that her mother had faked her own death, worked with Madame Masque, and nearly killed her best friend, Kate rejected her mother.[2]

Staying with Temple of the Shifting Sun, Eleanor relocated to Venice, Italy. Using the stolen Parallax Stone, Eleanor began draining the bank of accounts of wealthy clients for a chance to start over by entering the time and space portal opened by the stone. When Hawkeye learned of the suspicious activity, she travelled to Venice and found her mother. Unable to kill her own mother despite the evil she wrought, Kate allowed Eleanor to escape to a "new life" using the Parallax Stone.[5]

Attributes

Powers

Although she described herself as merely a half-vampire,[2] Eleanor appears to have possessed most of the same superhuman powers and special vulnerabilities common to vampires.
