When the Fantastic Four and the Avengers sacrificed their lives to destroy Onslaught, Franklin Richards, the son of the FF's Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman subconsciously created a pocket universe to save their lives. There they spent an entire year living new lives, "reborn" into a reality where they recently gained their abilities that vaguely mirror how they gained their powers originally.[citation needed]

Franklin created populated universe which included recreations of many of the heroes' allies and foes. Among these creations was one based on Betty Ross the long time love interest of Bruce Banner.[citation needed]

In this pocket universe, Liz Ross was the head of security at Stark International. Her father, Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross had been chief of staff with the United States military. She was present at the celebrations of Stark's acquittal in an undisclosed court case against him lodged by the people of New York. When Hydra attempted to take control of Stark's Buffalo lab in an attempt to detonate Bruce's experimental gamma bomb, both Liz and Bruce went to investigate. They were captured and Madame Hydra locked Banner in with his gamma bomb. Unable to free himself, Banner lowered the bomb down the missile silo in order to lessen the damage and loss of life its detonation would cause. The bomb went off, destroying Stark's plant and transforming Bruce in the Hulk.[citation needed]

Liz, being in close proximity to the shaft, was bombarded with a massive dose of gamma radiation that gave her terminal cancer, something she kept secret from everyone. During the disaster that created the Hulk, her employer Tony Stark was forced to become the armored super-hero known as Iron Man. In order to protect his secret, Stark (as Iron Man) posed as his own body guard. Ross resented Iron Man and shortly after his "employment" with Stark International she confronted him and expressed her dislike of him.[citation needed]

When "Rebel" O'Reilly attacked Stark International, Liz tried to remove a hysterical Pepper Potts and injured Happy Hogan from the scene of Rebel's battle with Iron Man. Forced to slap Pepper, Liz was struck back, knocking off her helmet and revealing to Pepper that she was dying of radiation poisoning.[citation needed]

Liz learned that Bruce Banner was really the Hulk and met with him and his new allies, the Hulkbusters. Reverting back into Bruce Banner, the two would confessed their mutual love for, and after Liz revealed to him that she was dying they shared a kiss. Banner went off to fight other menaces before ultimately being returned to his native Earth-616.[citation needed]
