History

Elysius was created by I.S.A.A.C., the sentient computer system of Titan, after being corrupted by Thanos and instructed to use the Life-Baths of Titan to give life to a team of lieutenants that would help him conquer the planet.[5][6]

When Mar-Vell arrived to oppose ISAAC, however, Elysius saw his noble intentions and fell in love with him helping purge Thanos' influence from the super computer. Following the final battle and the defeat of ISAAC, Elysius and Mar-Vell spent weeks together on Titan.[7][8]

After Mar-Vell died from Blackend,[9] Elysius used Titanian science to conceive a boy genetically extrapolated from both their DNAs and named him Genis. To protect him from Captain Marvel's enemies, Elysius had Genis artificially aged to maturity and then took him to an isolated world called Paraxis. There, they lived peacefully, safe from harm, with occasional visits from Eros, who Genis believed to be his father. When he was old enough, her son left the planet and led a normal life until the day Elysius told him the truth about his true lineage and gifted him the Nega-Bands worn by his father. After that, he was determined to carry on his father's heroic tradition as Legacy,[10] eventually changing to Captain Marvel.[11]

Elysius was later killed by Lord Syphonn,[3] but when Genis recreated the universe with Entropy, he unconsciously created a better version of himself that was able to bring Elysius back to life through an epic quest combining science and magic in unprecedented ways. Elysius was so impressed, she decided to repeat the process that gave life to Genis and create a daughter, who she named Phyla.[4] She had a strained relationship with her daughter, as Elysius favored Genis over her and was always overly critical of Phyla.[12]

Notes

  • In Death of Captain Marvel #1 there are hints that Elysius' origin is different than what had been told before. The scene in question is Elysius and Mar-Vell's final conversation alone, in which she tells him she "just drifted around until [she] came to Titan", something that seemingly contradicts the idea that Elysius was created in the Life-Baths of Titan by ISAAC.
