History

Enders, commonly known as Black Winters, are a race of universe-consuming entities.[1] At least one Black Winter existed in the Sixth Cosmos. It devoured the previous incarnation of Earth-616 at the end of the Sixth Cosmos.[3] In the Seventh Cosmos, many other Black Winters were created by Hadad. He used them to wage war against all universes and even the realms beyond them.[4] However, when entering the Oblivion Void surrounding the universe, most Black Winters were devoured by Oblivion.[1] When Hadad attempted to challenge the One Above All, he was defeated and imprisoned in the Oblivion Void for a billion years.[5][6]

In the Eighth Cosmos, the Black Winter from the Sixth Cosmos returned to collect Galactus, its purported herald, but it was destroyed alongside Galactus by Thor Odinson.[7] Later, Hadad was released from his prison, killed Oblivion, and resumed his war on existence with his army of Black Winters. They were fended off in multiple realms and Hadad was killed by the Abraxas-empowered Eternal Storm.[8]

Notes

  • The writer Murewa Ayodele clarified that the Black Winters featured in Storm (Vol. 5) #712 were created by Hadad, but Hadad did not create every Black Winter. The Black Winter from the Sixth Cosmos predated Hadad.[2]
  • Galactus' origin is tied to the multiversal cycles (the Sixth Cosmos is the previous multiverse),[9] but the Black Winter from the Sixth Cosmos is only stated to have destroyed the previous universe of Earth-616.[10] It is unclear if that Black Winter had also destroyed the rest of the Sixth Cosmos or if there were multiple Black Winters ending each universe of the Sixth Cosmos.
