Sir Eobar of Garrington was one of a line of Black Knights descended from Sir Percy of Scandia, the original Black Knight. Active in the 12th Century, Eobar's body was eventually possessed by the spirit of his descendant Dane Whitman.[1]
History
Crusades[]
In 1187 AD, Saladin captured Jerusalem. Pope Gregory VIII preached the Third Crusade to recover Jerusalem, which was led by several of Europe's most important leaders: King Richard I of Kingdom of England, Phillip II of the Kingdom of France, and Emperor Frederick I, Holy Roman Empire. Sir Eobar was knighted and ordered to expel the Moors from the Holy Land in the name of Christianity. Sir Eobar and his fellow knights made an arduous overland journey to occupied Jerusalem.[2]
The spirit of Mordred of Arthurian legend arose during the Crusades and influenced events, resulting in King Richard being captured by the Muslims. Mordred also allied himself with Richard's brother, Prince John, who ordered plans to abandon the king. Mordred was assisted by the wizard Chandu, who was served by Temax. After the body of Dane Whitman the Black Knight of the modern age was turned to stone, the spell cast by Merlin's soul summoned Whitman through time to oppose Mordred. Whitman's soul took possession and control of Sir Eobar's body in Cyprus. When Doctor Strange tried to recover Whitman soul, the Defenders were suddenly transported back in time to the 12th century. There they find the Black Knight and helped him rescue the captured King Richard and fight Prince John and Mordred. They stopped the army of giant Gnomes, but Prince John is able to get the Evil Eye during the battle. Before he can use it, Prester John appeared and seized it from him. He defeated tyrants and the Black Knight decided to stay in the past while the heroes returned home.[1]
However, later that year King Richard fell ill once again and ordered the Black Knight to his side. He ordered the Knight to assassinate the Saladin of Egypt before his own death. The spirits of both Garrington and Whitman struggled for control of their body. While Garrington intended to assassinate the Saladin, Whitman knew that to do so before the Saladin's destined fate would also alter history. Taking control again, Whitman prevented another assassin the Syrian Rashid ah-Din from killing the Saladin and allowed himself to be captured. King Richard, having apparently overcome his illness paid a ransom to free the Black Knightr.[3]
He became best friends with Bennet du Paris. The two had set out on a quest to find the Tower of Power, the domain of the mythic "Eternal Pharaoh" in Akkaba when Dane Whitman (Black Knight from the future) and Sersi had been transported back to the 12th century, Whitman transported into Eobar's body. Eobar retained control, but felt something was wrong. When he came into contact with Sersi he abandoned the quest, angering du Paris. Paris left to find the tower alone.[2] Meanwhile Sersi had awakened Dane's mind and he now had control of his body as Eobar passed on. While searching for Paris, the two were captured by Apocalypse. When they awoke they found Bennet du Paris had been transformed into Exodus, recognizing him as the same Exodus from the future. Apocalypse commanded Exodus to destroy the Black Knight. When Dane refused to kill Exodus, Sersi intervened, though her attack proved useless. Apocalypse again commanded Exodus to kill Sersi and Dane, though this time Exodus refused. He turned on Apocalypse calling him a "false god". However, Exodus was no match for him. Apocalypse stripped Exodus of his power and sealed him away in a Tomb in the Swiss Alps. Six months later, Dane found the crypt in which Exodus was trapped in a coma-like state. He found there was a "curse" preventing Exodus from leaving, yet others were allowed to come and go as they pleased. Dane left guards who had sworn to look after the crypt for generations to come, and he and Sersi returned to their time.[2]

Notes
- Though Whitman's spirit appeared to be possessing and animating the corpse of Garrington, he did seem to take on some aspects of Garrington's personality (including his speech patterns) and Garrington's personality did at times resurface and attempt to gain dominance over Whitman's.
