I'm a vampire, remember? We invented stealth.

History

Early Years[]

Eric Brooks was born in Harlem, New York. Blade's human mother was murdered by a vampire’s bite during his birth. This heartbreak gave Blade the innate gifts that have allowed him to become a living weapon. As a half-human, half-vampire, he fed on human blood until he was found by Jamal Afari. Jamal sheltered young Eric and began to train. Blade has used his enhanced abilities to master nearly every martial art and weapon form known to humankind, though he often favors the smooth speed of the katana. At some point Jamal gave his student the alias "Blade". Every Sunday he took young Eric to church. Once Vlad Dracula turned Jamal into a vampire, Blade had to kill his mentor.[1]

Blade worked with Glory Anah; the two of them traveled the world together, slaughtering vampires and making love. But when Blade made a mistake that led to Glory herself being turned, it had a profound effect that changed his approach to partnerships for the future. Blade and Hannibal King also joined the Nightstalkers, pursuing a creature in New England in March of 1992.[2][2]

Joining Midnight Suns[]

One day, Blade hunted vampires on the roof of a building in New York. After killing them all, Eric noticed how Magik and the Caretaker had teleported to him. They invited him to join the Midnight Suns, to which Eric quickly agreed.[3] Blade was older compared to the rest of new recruits - Robbie Reyes, Nico Minoru, Scarlet Witch, and Magik, but got along well with them. He also revealed his secret identity, which he doesn't usually share with many people, including several members of the superhero community. Before long however, tragedy struck when a ritual by Wanda went wrong and vaporized Agatha Harkness, Caretaker's long-time love. Though Wanda was not directly at fault, Caretaker still sent her away to Doctor Strange, something the other Suns disapproved of.[1]

The Avengers arrived at the Abbey and were introduced to the Midnight Suns and the Caretaker. Blade and the others stood by and watched as Sarah and Strange resurrected Hunter, Lilith's child and the only one to have ever defeated her. Blade the first to welcome the newly resurrected Hunter back to the world of the living. The Hunter joined joined the Midnight Suns in their fight against Lilith, and soon accompanied Blade and Doctor Strange to the Sanctum Sanctorum through a Limbo portal opened by Magik. The three of them were attacked by Hydra minions whom they quickly dispatched, finding out that they were enhanced by Lilith's magic which made them more formidable than ever before. Just then, the protecting wards have failed and the Sanctum was engulfed by the shell created from the Venom symbiote. Strange, Blade, and Hunter fought Venom himself, who was driven away by Spider-Man. With no way to get inside the Sanctum, they had to return to the Abbey.

Blade soon joined Hunter and the Avenger Captain Marvel on a mission to stop Hydra's Doctor Faustus. Upon arriving on the warehouse roof, they immediately noted Hydra's presence before spotting Doctor Faustus and an unknown device through a skylight below. Captain Marvel opted for a direct approach, smashing through the skylight and engaging the Hydra troops. Faustus decided to test his device, which exploded in a massive energy burst which Captain Marvel managed to absorb. Though they were unable to apprehend Faustus, they managed to located and retrieve a valuable artifact. Blade developed romantic feelings for Captain Marvel, and organized a Book Club in the Abbey as a way to connect with her.[1]

The Fight Against Lilith[]

The four Midnight Suns and Hunter all shared the same dream of Scarlet Witch appearing and calling them by name. Fed up with Caretaker and the Avengers not doing anything to get Wanda back, this prompted them to attempt a rescue against Caretaker's wishes. Nico swiped Caretaker's spellbook and found a spell that could potentially track Wanda. Nico secured the door to the Abbey chapel as the group arranged themselves in a circle on the floor. She told everyone to maintain concentration on the spell as she began chanting, with the other four joining in. Black smoke emanated from the mirror, causing both Robbie and Blade to cease chanting while Nico began floating in the air. Hunter seized the Staff of One and shattered the mirror, creating a vortex that sucked Hunter, Nico, and Magik, leaving Blade and Robbie behind. The other three returned after dark, having barely made out with their lives.[1]

Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel identified an underground shipping facility potentially housing artifacts stolen from the Sanctum. Blade realized they wanted him to lead the mission due to his expertise in what he called "dirty work." At the site, the heroes observed Hydra troops hoisting a large container from the hole, their method for smuggling artifacts from the Sanctum. Blade leapt down the hole, with Hunter following behind. They landed in a tunnel, noticing one of the side passages filled with tendrils from the Sanctum just before Venom appeared and attacked. They couldn't withstand him indefinitely, which prompted Hunter to leap atop Venom and plunge a blade deeply into his chest. Green energy began swirling as a crack appeared in Hunter's collar. They were thrown off Venom and enveloped in a burst of magic which rendered Hunter unconscious but also injured Venom, forcing him to retreat and allowing Blade to rescue Hunter. Blade was disturbed by what he had witnessed — Hunter crying out for Lilith while surrounded by swirling dark energy — and feared that Hunter would fall.[1]

Equipped with a suit which would provide protection against Venom's alien energy signature, Hunter, Blade, and Captain Marvel returned to the tunnels beneath the Sanctum. Hunter touched a mass of tendrils, purging them and clearing their path. Blade and Captain Marvel urged Hunter to proceed to the Sanctum while they stayed behind to fight Hydra.[1]

Hunting the Barghest[]

Blade detected an unfamiliar scent within the Abbey grounds and suspected it might have been a Barghest, a legendary demon dog. Doctor Strange confirmed that Blade's instincts were correct and expressed belief that the creature might serve as the key to penetrating the barrier surrounding Lilith Gamma Lab, requesting to capture it alive. Wolverine asked to join the hunt, and they spotted the Barghest before the red portal. When it turned and escaped, the portal remained open, prompting Blade, Hunter, and Wolverine to pursue. Upon passing through the portal, they found themselves inside a Hydra facility. Having subdued the Barghest, the heroes transported it back to the Abbey, where Strange had it secured.[1]

Blade joined the others in the final confrontation with Lilith at the Temple of Chthon, which ended with the threat being dealt with, at the cost of losing Hunter to the Darkhold.[1]
