Synopsis for "Escape -- To Terror!"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Silver Surfer (Vol. 2) #1.

Brief Summary:
The Fantastic Four build a device that allows the Silver Surfer to break free of Galactus' barrier. The Surfer quickly returns to Zenn-La, but is horrified to find the planet destroyed and devoid of life. The remaining survivors blame the Surfer for this destruction, because it was Galactus that returned to consume Zenn-La after the Surfer had betrayed him. The Silver Surfer also discovers that Shalla Bal was captured by Mephisto and is still trapped on Earth. He quickly returns to Earth and finds Shalla Bal under the control of Mephisto. The Surfer battles Mephisto and is close to overpowering him, when Shalla Bal is suddenly sent back to Zenn-La. The Silver Surfer rushes to catch her, but realizes that Galactus' barrier will stop him. Instead, he gives her some of his Power Cosmic so that she can bring life back to Zenn-La.

Silver Surfer Vol 2 1 page 1.jpg

Detailed Summary:
Still trapped on Earth, the Silver Surfer laments over his plight and recalls the events that led to him becoming the Silver Surfer. He also reflects on his first encounter with the Fantastic Four and how, through meeting Alicia Masters, he renounced his role as Galactus' herald. It was this event that trapped the Surfer on Earth. While trying once again to pierce the barrier and failing, the Surfer notices a beam of energy also striking the barrier. He searches for the source of the beam, which leads him to the Fantastic Four. Reed has come up with an alpha beam device which temporarily weakens the barrier allowing the Surfer to fly out. He cautions the Surfer though that they can only do this once. If he comes back to Earth again he'll be trapped again. The Silver Surfer and Fantastic Four try it out and it works.

Happy to finally be free of the Earth, the Surfer speeds off to Zenn-La to be reunited with Shalla Bal. Arriving on the planet, the Surfer finds the place decimated. He's attacked by his own people and, after stopping them, learns what has come of his home planet. After betraying Galactus, the world-devourer considered their agreement nullified. He returned to Zenn-La to consume it, as he had originally intended. When he inquires about Shalla Bal he learns that she had been kidnapped by Mephisto. The Surfer then recalls his last encounter with Dr. Doom in which he used what was apparently an exact duplicate of Shalla Bal, but now realizes that she was the real Shalla Bal all along. The Surfer then speeds back to Earth to find his true love, unaware that Mephisto has been watching the whole time and that this will suit his ends of trying to obtain the Surfer's soul.

When the Surfer returns to Earth, he tracks down Shalla Bal who has spent the past months working in the kitchen of Dr. Doom's castle. When he confronts the girl she is kidnapped by Mephisto again. Following the lord of lies into his own domain, the Surfer confronts Mephisto who unsuccessfully tries to use his powers to force the Surfer into submission. The Surfer and Mephisto then lock in physical combat, until Mephisto strikes out at Shalla Bal.

The Surfer breaks off his attack and Mephisto uses the moment to commit one final act. He transforms Shalla Bal into energy and sends the energy orb out into space, back to Zenn-La. The Surfer chases after it and gives Shalla Bal a portion of his Power Cosmic before she passes through Galactus' barrier. Although he's trapped on Earth again and Mephisto's revenge is complete, the Surfer still has a minor victory. When Shalla Bal returns to Zenn-La, she finds that the Power Cosmic endowed to her has given her the ability to revitalize the decimated planet.

Silver Surfer Vol 3 1 page 4.jpg

Detailed Summary:
During his last failed attempt at breaking through Galactus' barrier, the Silver Surfer comes across the Fantastic Four. Their conversation had only started when the Surfer is suddenly attacked by the Champion. The Champion is quickly defeated in battle by the Surfer and concedes that he has come to kill the Surfer so that he can not get involved with the Skrulls' plans for conquest. He also tells the Surfer that Galactus' current herald, Nova, is the Skrulls' prisoner. The Surfer is surprised that the Champion believes he could escape Earth, but the Elder disappears before revealing any more information.

This gets the Silver Surfer and Fantastic Four thinking of all the times they tried to free the Surfer. When the Thing wonders if the Surfer ever tried to leave the Earth without his board, the group suddenly realize that they never considered this idea. Perhaps it's the Surfer's board, not the Surfer himself, that is held back by the barrier. Flying out into space aboard one of the FF's space shuttles, the Surfer is amazed when the idea really works. Converting his board into pure cosmic energy he manages to get it past the barrier as well. Thanking the Fantastic Four once more for helping him get free of the Earth, the Surfer soars off into the vast universe.

The Surfer searches for Galactus, who is not very pleased to see that his former herald has escaped his banishment. Galactus is about to destroy the Surfer when he offers to save Nova for him in exchange for the removal of his punishment. Galactus agrees and the Silver Surfer storms the planet where Nova is being held prisoner. Freeing her with ease, the Surfer smashes their way off the planet and returns Nova to Galactus. With his herald safe, Galactus keeps his end of the bargain and pardons the Surfer. With his space-time powers once again fully restored, the Silver Surfer is finally free. He leaves the two behind, happily soaring through the cosmos.

The Skrulls attack the Kree, taking them by surprise. The Kree plan their counter attack, unaware that a Skrull spy is hidden among them. Silver Surfer Vol 3 6 page 1.jpg

Detailed Summary:
Kylor's attack fleet is engaging the Kree forces as he plans out a strategy. Things aren't going so well due to internal struggles within the Skrull command, especially with Aptak, a decorated strategist who is trapped in a female body form due to the genetics bomb that locked the Skrulls shape-shifting powers. While on Kree-Lar, the Supreme Intelligence meets with Nenora, Tus-Katt, and Phae-Dorr to figure out the next wave of Kree activity in this current Kree/Skrull war.

While on the planet Gullish Yar, the Silver Surfer and Mantis question the defeated Obliterator about the Elders plans for Galactus. The Obliterator tells them, like all the Elders of the Universe, he's one of the oldest beings in the universe. He attributes his long life to his obsession with obliterating things. He had become the lone survivor of his home world due to his dedication to obliteration, which brought him to destroy his entire planet. He explains that over the years he met the other Elders of the Universe and that they became a close knit group. However, upon discovering Galactus (a being older than them, because he was the last survivor of the previous universe), they decided to destroy him. He explains that with the destruction of Galactus, it would cause an upset in the universal balance between Death and Eternity and that existence itself would collapse. Their plan becomes clear. Because the Elders are immortal, the collapse of the universe would cause them to become beings just like Galactus when a new universe ultimately forms. Thus, making them the true Elders of this new universe. He also tells them that the Elders have gathered on Earth.

The Silver Surfer and Mantis resolve to stop the Elders and leave the Obliterator behind on the planet. As the Surfer is forced to come to terms over his feelings towards Mantis, the Supreme Intelligence determines that there is a traitor in their midst. Supremor destroys his pet Nullet who he suspects is a spy, unaware that it's really Nenora who's the spy. Kylor has an altercation between himself and another "emperor" of the Skrull empire, Yorak. Before the Surfer and Mantis can get to Earth, the Surfer is contacted by Shalla-Bal who asks for his assistance in defending Zenn-La from an approaching Kree fleet. Norrin, bound by his promise to be the defender of Zenn-La, chooses to fulfill his duty and leaves Mantis to go after the Elders alone.

Ronan then goes to Nenora, who charges him with going out and accusing the Silver Surfer, whom she believes attacked a Kree outpost (unaware that it is an impostor.) After dispatching Ronan, Nenora decides to eliminate any potential that she will be outed as a Skrull spy, and calls into her former master Kylor, and arranges for what Kylor believes to be a Skrull ambush of a Kree space fleet.

Meanwhile, within the Coalsack, the Silver Surfer and Nova find the head of the Contemplator floating in space, and realize that Cap'N Reptyl had killed the man who sought asylum in his realm. With another one of the Elders which Galactus wanted punished killed the Surfer and Nova decide to search for the others. The Surfer taking a moment to be alone in the Coal Sack to mourn the loss of Mantis. He also decides to go out and find the child of Mantis.

Exiting the Coal Sack, Nova wants to stop at the nearest civilized planet for a drink before continuing their mission. They arrive on a Kree-controlled world where the Surfer is revered as almost a god. However, they are shocked to find the people of this planet flee from him in fear. Things get even worse when Ronan appears and attacks the Surfer for his "crimes" against the Kree empire. After a battle, the Surfer easily incapacitates Ronan and he flees the planet with Nova. The Surfer is now determined to find out who's been impersonating him.

While elsewhere in space, Kylor and his fleet arrive for their "ambush" to find that it's really a trap, and they are easily destroyed. With Kylor and his men dead, nobody knows that Nenora is really a Skrull and can continue her quest for power as ruler of the Kree. While elsewhere still, S'Byll, another Skrull vying for control of their empire sends one of her men to Earth.

Finally, the Surfer and Nova track down his impostor to a desolate world where the two Surfers decide to prove who is the true sentinel of the space ways.

Synopsis for "Silver Mirrors!"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Silver Surfer (Vol. 3) #14.

Continued from last issue... The Silver Surfer has come face to face with his impostor who has framed him for attacking Kree outposts. The two Surfers lock in battle and during the fight, one of them is the victor. However, the defeated Surfer is left to live, and after some discussion, Nova leaves with the winning Surfer. Traveling through space, this Surfer deduces that the impostor must have gone through a similar process as the Super-Skrull to gain powers similar to that of the real Silver Surfer. However, before the two part company to continue their respective quests, this Surfer attacks Nova -- turning out to be the impostor after all.

This faux Surfer reveals that he was sent to spy on Captain Marvel during his final days, and initially pretended to be Devil Slayer, until the real Devil Slayer actually showed up. He then chose to disguise himself as the Silver Surfer. After the funeral for Mar-Vel, this fake Surfer decided to keep up the ruse as not many worlds knew of the Surfers exile on the planet Earth. He would ultimately be augmented just like the Super-Skrull so that he could mimic the Surfer's power cosmic as well. Ultimately he would be trapped in this form much like his entire race when the Genetics Bomb went off and trapped them all in whatever form they were in.

After explaining himself, the fake Surfer -- revealing his name to be Bartak -- is then attacked by Ronan the Accuser who had heard the whole thing. The two lock in battle, and ultimately Ronan wins, using his powers to incinerate the fake Surfer before departing. Freeing herself, Nova races back to where the she left the real Silver Surfer behind and finds that he is on his way to meet her, fully revived. The two then give into their feelings for one another and kiss.

While back on Earth, the Skrull sent out by S'Byll lands on the planet but attracts the attention of some hunters. Although they fatally shoot the Skrull, he still manages to fire off a weapon into the sky, and dies knowing that he's completed his mission.

Synopsis for "Three Into Nothing Goes..."

This story is a reprint of the comic
Silver Surfer (Vol. 3) #15.

Story continued from Silver Surfer Annual #1... Heeding Galactus' call for aid, the Silver Surfer goes to visit Reed and Susan Richards to ask for their help in saving Galactus. The Richards agree to come to their aid, however, are forced to bring their son Franklin along for the ride. Upon arriving at Galactus' ship, they find that the world devourer is dying due to his consumption of the immortal Elders of the Universe, and only the Soul Gems can save Galactus. These Soul Gem's were sucked into a black hole during Galactus' battle against the Elders, and so the three heroes are charged with retrieving them. Susan Richards is key because in coming into contact with the Soul Gem's they run the risk of losing their own soul to it, and Sue's powers would allow them to carry the Soul Gems without touching them.

With their mission set, they leave Franklin in the care of Nova and take a ship straight into the black hole. On the opposite side, they find themselves in a strange and bizarre reality. They track the Gem's energy signature to a planetoid where they are attacked by the Possessor and a bunch of creatures which worship him. They make short work of these attackers forcing the Possessor to call off the attack. The Possessor explains that after their arrival in this reality, he soon became worshiped by the people for having tales from another world, and decided to stay while the Trader and Astronomer left with the Soul Gems. Before they leave, Reed and the Surfer notice that Susan is acting crueler and crueler the longer they spend in this realm, and Reed begins to wonder if her Malice persona is resurfacing.

They track down the Astronomer and Trader, who boast how they've made it so that they cannot take the Soul Gems: The Trader is wearing bio-armor which keeps the Gems in a force field that can only be shut off when the wearer of the armor is killed. The three heroes fight the two Elders anyway, and during the fight, Reed is knocked out. Susan then uses her powers to make the Astronomer's limbs disappear and forces them to stop their attack. Sue then appeals to the Trader's obsession, trading to make a bargain for the Soul Gems. When the Trader makes his price: The Surfer's life, Susan pulls out a ray gun (which she had hidden invisibly on her body the whole time) and blasts the Surfer point blank in the face, seemingly killing him. She then proclaims to the Trader that she is no longer Susan Richards, but Malice.

Synopsis for "Malice: A 'Four' Thought"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Silver Surfer (Vol. 3) #16.

Continued from last issue... Susan Richards has lapsed back into her Malice persona and has obtained the Soul Gems for her own gain and intends to let Galactus die. Meanwhile, the Silver Surfer has been linked to the Trader's Bio-Armor making him their slave, however, the Surfer refuses to do their bidding. However, Reed Richards suggests to them that while they may be immortal in their home universe, the laws of this one may be different and that they can also be killed. Reed also tells them that without their aid they would be trapped, and promises that if they let the Surfer go, they will help them return to Earth's dimension after Reed rescues his wife. The Astronomer agrees and the Surfer is let free.

On the trail of Sue, Reed explains that Susan's sudden chaotic behavior and Reed's excessively logical stance is due to the nature of the reality that they are in and that perhaps everything is bound by the entities Master Order and Lord Chaos. Reed and the Surfer track down Sue to the entrance to this reality where they board her ship. There they battle Sue to try and gain control of the Soul Gems. However, they are distracted from their fight when a ship containing the Fantastic Four and Dr. Doom fly past them. During this moment of distraction, the Soul Gem touches Reed and takes possession of his body.

The entity within the Soul Gem then takes over Reed's body and intends to take both Sue and the Silver Surfers souls, starting with the Surfer. However, the Surfer resists this attempt and they battle. Being fed up with the challenge that the Surfer is presenting, he then takes Sue's soul instead. As their battle continues they enter the black hole. The entity inside Reed then leaves his body, revealing himself as the In-Betweener, and that all these events are going according to his machinations.

Synopsis for "Resurrection!"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Silver Surfer (Vol. 3) #17.

Continued from last issue... The Surfer and the In-Betweener battle against each other in order to gain possession of the Soul Gems. However, the In-Betweener proves to be too strong, and also reveals that he's been working in league with the Possessor, Trader, and Astronomer. With the Gem's in their possession, they leave the Silver Surfer, Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman behind to continue their quest to kill Galactus.

Returning to their home reality, the In-Between and the Elders race towards Galactus' ship. Seeing this, Franklin Richards and Nova dispatch Galactus' Punisher robot to try and stop them. However, it proves to be a minor nuisance and is destroyed. They then easily defeat Nova, but when the In-Betweener tries to kill Galactus, he realizes that in this reality he cannot do so and so decides that he will bring Galactus back to his home reality and kill him there. The Elders protest this idea because their fellows are still trapped inside Galactus. The In-Betweener then summons Death, who then kills the three Elders before returning to her own realm. The In-Betweener then sets Galactus' ship on a course into the black hole so that he may finish his task.

While in that other dimension, Reed, Sue and the Silver Surfer get into contact with Master Order and Lord Chaos, and the two entities agree to help them in stopping the In-Betweener. They use their powers to free the Elders of the Universe who have been trapped inside Galactus and restore him to full strength. They also find that the In-Betweener has left the ship, but Franklin and Nova are safe. Suddenly, Galactus revives, demanding to be brought to the In-Betweener so that he may be destroyed.

Synopsis for "Adam"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Silver Surfer Annual #1.

The High Evolutionary has appeared over Olympia the home of the Eternals. Confronted by Ikaris, Makkari, Sersi, Thena and Karkas, the Evolutionary explains to them his goal in unlocking the mysteries of DNA, and asks that the Eternals help him in maping out the Silver Surfer's DNA for him. While in deep space, the Silver Surfer bids farewell to Nova and heads to Earth, intent on finding the child of Mantis. Arriving on Earth, the Surfer is witness to the resurrection of the Super-Skrull. When the Super-Skrull decides that he does not want anyone on Earth to be aware of his return he attacks the Surfer.

Their battle is interrupted by the arrival of the Eternals, who trap both in an energy field and tell them of their plans: That they intend to map the Surfer's DNA. They also intend on mapping out the Super-Skrull's DNA as well as he's a member of the Deviant offshoot of the Skrull race. The Surfer refuses to have his DNA mapped because he believes that whoever the Eternals are working for will abuse the knowledge and potentially make an army of Surfer clones.

Taken against their will to Olympia, the Surfer and Super-Skrull are placed inside pyramid shaped devices which will break down their DNA code for the Eternals. When the two realize that the two pyramids are harmonized by their own powers, they use them to the fullest to cause the machines to explode, freeing themselves.

After a battle with the Eternals, the Super-Skrull makes an escape, with the Eternals and the Surfer following after him. When the Eternals try again to detain the Super-Skrull, the Silver Surfer stops them, and covers the Super-Skrull so that he might escape. The Surfer makes a truce with the Eternals, and agrees to leave them in solitude while he contemplates the High Evolutionary's goals and if he chooses to support them or not, and speeds off.

Synopsis for "The Great Terror"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Marvel Fanfare #51.

In this alternate reality, the Silver Surfer is still trapped within the barrier put around the Earth by Galactus. He is just outside of Earth's atmosphere when he spots and is attacked by a Kree cruiser. It is ultimately destroyed but the Surfer is blasted and falls back to Earth. These events are all being watched by Mephisto who intends to once more manipulate the Surfer to his own ends.

The Surfer wakes up some time later in a hospital room, with the Human Torch, Alicia Masters, and the Sub-Mariner watching over him. The Surfer revives and is told of recent Kree attacks on Earth. The Surfer goes to the site of the most recent and gets information from Clay Quartermain who has a S.H.I.E.L.D. unit out investigating.

The Surfer tracks down the two Kree soldiers and defeats them both in battle. This infuriates Mephisto, and it's also noticed by the Supreme Intelligence on distant Kree-Lar. The Intelligence is looking for the child of Mantis so that he may destroy it. He finds the perfect too in Mangog, who is still ant sized following his battle against Thor. The Supreme Intelligence contacts him and promises to restore him if he tracks down the child of Mantis and kills it. Mangog agrees and is restored to his normal height and goes on a rampage.

The Silver Surfer meanwhile, has met with Mantis who invites him into her home where she tells the Surfer all about her past and connections with Mantis, and that her son -- Sprout, is a human/plant hybrid. They are interrupted by Mangog's attack. The Surfer and Mantis battle the creature, however not even the intervention of Sprout seems to be enough to stop Mangog. However, the Surfer soon figures out the unstoppable creatures Achilles heel: It's a creature spawned on vengeance. So when the Surfer submits to Mangog, it saps the creatures strength and it eventually fades into nothingness.
