History

Early Life[]

Esteban Beach, often called “Spider” by those around him, was a spirited and adventurous teenager living in Los Angeles. He was the younger brother of aspiring actress Ginger Beach and quickly developed a fascination with superheroes, particularly Wonder Man, who lived in the same apartment building. Esteban's natural enthusiasm and relentless energy made him endearing to his sister’s social circle. Their mutual agent, Neal Saroyan, assigned Spider to Wonder Man as a self-declared sidekick in an attempt to generate positive publicity.[1] Though initially annoyed by the teen’s persistent presence, Wonder Man eventually grew fond of him.[2]

Exposure to Ionic Energy[]

Esteban was among the eight individuals present when Wonder Man, having been attacked by Angkor, experienced a massive and uncontrolled burst of ionic energy.[3] While there were no immediate effects, each of the eight—including Esteban—underwent subtle and permanent changes due to their exposure.[4] Esteban later discovered that he had developed the ability to generate electromagnetic duplicates of himself—replicas made of pure ionic energy that could act independently at his command. He embraced these new powers with enthusiasm and began referring to himself as “Stat.”[5]

Role in the Crazy Eight[]

Esteban was instrumental in encouraging the formation of the Crazy Eight, the informal superhero team formed by those affected by Wonder Man's outburst.[6] Though young and relatively inexperienced, he persuaded Alex Flores to step up as the group’s leader, demonstrating surprising emotional intelligence and a desire to contribute meaningfully. As Stat, Esteban joined the rest of the team Dreamer, Snap, Buff, Visionary, Attractive Lad, Glamour Girl, and Auteur—in fighting the corrupt enforcement unit Armed Response.[7][8] His duplicates were especially useful for reconnaissance and distraction tactics. When Lotus Newmark retaliated by sending assassins Splice and Rampage to eliminate the Crazy Eight, Stat played a key role in defending his team.[9]

After the Team[]

During the mystical confrontation involving Mephisto, Blackheart, and the Grim Reaper, Wonder Man reabsorbed the ionic energy he had unintentionally shared with the others.[10] However, Stat and Dreamer secretly resisted the process and retained a portion of their powers.[11] While most of the Crazy Eight returned to civilian life, Esteban quietly continued practicing his abilities and exploring the idea of becoming a superhero in his own right. Following Wonder Man's apparent death during the Scatter conflict[12], Esteban moved in with Gloria Angel, who became his legal guardian.[13]
