Synopsis for "Dream a Little Dream"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Excalibur #29.

Excalibur spring into action when a mysterious spaceship hangs over their Lighthouse. Nightcrawler teleports aboard, where he finds a collapsed Alien, who appears as a human with a white horse’s head. As they come too, it recognises him, begging him for help, but Nightcrawler can’t remember their meeting. He soon finds it is Alex Power, who currently takes the form of a Kymellian Horse. Alex tells him that while visiting the Institute of Psychic Research in Britain, to attempt to find a cure his mother, the whole Power family were captured, knocked out with a sleeping gas. Alex escaped using his cloud form, but passed out once he got back to the ship.

Excalibur soon reach the facility, and while Rachel, Meggan and Brian enter, disguised as medical staff and patient, Nightcrawler and Alex have to sneak in. Alex feels comforted that there are others who understand what is like to look different, and reveals he too can teleport while in this form, as they teleport through the security. Alex soon finds his family being guarded, and goes to fetch the rest of Excalibur with Nightcrawler. However, they have been discovered, and as they reach them, the staff at the facility reveal their true form, of Demons. As they attempt to fight them off, the sleeping gas floods the room, and they are all captured. They are soon strapped into machines, that cause them to have nightmares so that the Demon’s Master can feed off them.

In the nightmare world, they manipulate Rachel into hunting down Excalibur. She captures Captain Britain and has him tried for high treason. Meggan finds herself in a restaurant, where Brian dumps her and then Nightcrawler rejects her as she goes to him for comfort. In a similar vein, Nightcrawler is rejected for not being ‘normal’ by a succession of people, from Meggan to Kitty, before Rachel captures him. Alex himself is directly confronted by the Demon’s Master, who is called Nightmare, and Rachel. As Nightmare tries to absorb Alex, Franklin Richards uses him abilities to separate them, and takes control of Phoenix to end the Nightmares. Afterwards, Excalibur awake in their lighthouse, and Power Pack on their ship. They’ve all had a series of interconnected dreams, but cannot remember the events at the institute at all.

Synopsis for "'Twas a Dark and Stormy Night...'"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Excalibur #30.

In the middle of a storm, Brigadier Alysande Stuart arrives at Excalibur’s lighthouse for her brother’s birthday party. As she goes to open the door , Meggan, in the form of a vampire, bursts through and escapes into the night, Captain Britain, Lockheed and Widget in hot pursuit. As she comes inside, Alistaire brings her upstairs, where Phoenix has been injured, and Kurt bitten. Alysande launches into her first aid training.

Meanwhile, in the sky above London, Captain Britain spots Dai Thomas and the Police, who are investigating a series of attacks by a large bat. He sends the group off in the direction of Hyde Park, where the last attack took place.

Back at the lighthouse, Alysande and Alistaire are helpless. They’ve done all they can for the unconscious Rachel, but without the medical expertise of Nightcrawler, they can do no more. Bored, Alistaire continues to open his presents, and as he mulls over the gift he receives from Rachel, he has an idea. He then sets about trying to get in contact with Dr Strange. He succeeds in getting in contact with Wong, who immediately alerts the Doctor.

In Hyde Park, London, the Excalibur group are hiding in the bushes, lying in wait for Meggan. Above them in the trees, a nightmarish figure looks down on them. Meggan dives out of the trees, straight for Captain Britain. Brian struggles with her, not wishing to hit her, but as she goes to bite his throat, he finally throws her off. As she crumples on the ground, Captain Britain rushes to her side, as she transforms back to her natural self. However, when she awakes, she attracts the attention of a group of pensioners, and convincing them she is being attacked, they set on Captain Britain as she escapes in the form of a rabbit.

At the lighthouse, Alistaire complains about Dr Strange, thinking that a powerful Sorcerer should have arrived by now. On cue, Dr Strange arrives. He quickly diagnoses Phoenix as being concussed, and gets Rintrah to move the pile of furniture blocking the cupboard where Alistaire trapped Nightcrawler, convinced he would become a vampire after Meggan bit him. While Alistaire is worried, Dr Strange’s assertion that nothing is wrong proves to be correct when Nightcrawler emerges. Despite a large gash in his shoulder from Meggan’s attack, he is fine. Alistaire is embarrassed when he realises that Kurt has always had fangs, and quietly sits by while the doctor tends to Kurt’s wound.

Back at the park, Captain Britain, having flown away from his pursuers, finds Meggan in a clearing in the woods. It is now dawn, and as Lockheed prevents her escape, the Captain grabs her, and Widget opens a portal to the cave under Excalibur’s lighthouse. They immediately attract the attention of the rest of Excalibur and their guests upstairs, who rush down. Captain Britain mistakes Rintrah for one of Meggan’s guises. Before the fight can continue further, Dr Strange freezes them, and as they identify them , releases them until only Meggan is frozen. As Dr Strange realises that the energy from the Darkhold has caused these changes, he uses the Eye of Agamotto to drain the energy from Meggan until she returns to normal. As he and Rintrah leave, he prescribes a holiday for Kurt to recover, rest for Rachel and observation on Meggan in case she switches back. Captain Britain, meanwhile, is to attend a party thrown by the senior citizens who beat him up.

Synopsis for "No Man is an Island"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Excalibur #31.

In a plane over the South Sea, Kurt Wagner laments that while the rest of the X-men died saving the world, he is to die in a plane crash on holiday. However, he spies an island on the horizon, and as the plane he is piloting crashes into the sea, he teleports out, having recovered from his injuries enough that he can now teleport more than once a day. However, he teleports out at the same speed the plane was flying at, so he skips across the surface of the ocean like a stone before he ploughs into the beach. As he passes out, he sees giant stone busts of the X-men, including him, staring down on him. From the tree line, a lady spies him collapsed on the beach.

When he wakes up, he sees the same woman being taken to a volcano by a group of spear-wielding islanders. He shadows them, and finds when they arrive that they are about to sacrifice her. He teleports in and grabs her just before she is thrown in, but weak from teleporting multiple times, he topples back into the volcano with her. However, a rock platform forms out of the side of the pit, and they are taken into a cavern, where a green creature with red eyes stares down at them. It doesn’t seem to sense their presence, so Nightcrawler reads the pictograms on the wall, which he soon connects to the first adventure he had with the X-men. His theory is confirmed when the creature awakes, calling itself the Son of Krakoa, Vega-Superior, who wishes to avenge the death of his father on Nightcrawler. As the tendrils surrounding Vega-Superior try to choke Nightcrawler, he breaks off a chunk of stalagmite which he uses to cut through them. He begins to climb away from the writhing tendrils, as Vega-Superior threatens that he cannot escape from ‘us’. Nightcrawler is confused until Vega-Superior releases his Vega-men from within pink glowing pods. They are copies of the original X-men, memories passed down from Krakoa to his spores, of which Vega-Superior is the only survivor. His version of Colossus is made of stone, Wolverine of Ice, and Cyclops shoots lava. Nightcrawler is disappointed by the poor copies of the originals, and makes light of it by easily defeating them. When he is finished, his companion shouts something, still in a language he does not understand. Vega-Superior translates, saying that she intends to kill Nightcrawler, and he teleports away moments before her knife passes through the spot he was in.

As he emerges on the surface, Vega-Superior sends another minion, this one Angel made of vines, revealing to Nightcrawler that he can control the whole island like his father. As Nightcrawler slams it into a tree, and lands on the ground, he is distracted by more islanders shouting at him. Another Vega-man, this one his double, grabs him from behind, but he easily throws it off, as none of the doubles imitate the original’s fighting prowess. As he goes to finish his double, his copy seems to melt. Vega-Superior tells him it is teleporting, and as it sinks into the island, it reforms beneath him, but Nightcrawler again swats it away. With no more enemies, Nightcrawler considers how to get home.

Suddenly, Vega-Superior and his companion from earlier burst from the sand behind him. Nightcrawler dives into the sea and swims away from the shore. Egged on by his female companion, Vega-Superior follows him into the sea. However, he soon realises, as he begins to sink, that his powers are gone now he is no longer connected to the island, and he sinks below the waves.

Later, Nightcrawler is found by the rest of Excalibur being entertained by the local population on the island, which he has christened Wagner’s isle, who treat him as a God. As they sit down to a meal, Kurt begins to retell his story…

This story is a reprint of the comic
Excalibur #32.

Outside the Houses of Parliament, another version of Excalibur attacks and swiftly defeats a group of Nazis. All the members of the team, are male, with the exception of Captain Britain, who is female. After they hand the Nazis over to the police, they return to their lighthouse, where as Captain Britain finishes putting her charges to bed, she looks out over the bay. Suddenly, her eyes snap open, and it is revealed to have all been a dream of a woman in therapy. Their session has ended, and the client, the Prime Minister, leaves satisfied. As the therapist shuts the door, they are revealed to be Mesmero.

Meanwhile, at St Searle’s school for girls, Kitty Pryde is introduced to her new headmistress, Miss Rutherford, after being sent there by Courtney Ross, who is herself a former pupil. She is soon dismissed, and climbs to her room at the top of a tower. She finds her room ransacked. There a group of girls are reading her diary. She grabs her diary, knocking the girl into the light switch. In the dark, one of the girls swings for her, and Kitty is surprised when she is hit, as her powers seem to be inhibited. She leaps at the girl, hitting her back, just as the lights come on and the headmistress enters the room. The other girls are sent to their rooms, and Kitty is forced to write out lines 1000 times. The headmistress rejects her first effort, forcing her to rewrite it until her handwriting is acceptable. As Kitty finds her way back to her room, she swears to get even with the girls and find out why her powers don’t work.

In London, at the national gallery, Vixen and her gang are trying to break in. Excalibur quickly rush to the scene. As Phoenix and Nightcrawler capture her henchmen, Meggan and Captain Britain chase down Vixen. As she rounds a corner, she switches back to being Nigel Frobisher, who sends the two superheroes off on a wild goose chase.

Back at St Searle’s, Kitty’s first week has been horrible, with a series of pranks being played on her. She's been ignored by all the other pupils. Restricted to the school grounds, Kitty tries to sneak out at night, where she overhears Miss Rutherford on the telephone. She is sobbing, begging for money to keep paying off the school’s debts. Sadly, she puts the phone down, with no money or future for the school left. Kitty continues outside the school, and considers returning to Excalibur’s lighthouse. She trips and falls through a wall. She realises that her powers are only blocked within school grounds.

On the school playing fields in the morning, the girls are convinced they’ve made Kitty run away. To their surprise, she appears on the field, and joins the opposing hockey team. As Huntsman, her chief tormentor, charges towards her goal at the end of the match, the game a tie, Kitty runs out from goal, tackles Huntsman, and hits the ball into her face, scoring a goal for her team. She rips off the jacket Huntsman is wearing, which she stole from Kitty. Using the opportunity to make a stand, she demands all her stolen items back. From a distance, Courtney Ross watches, impressed.

In Mesmero’s house in London, he is woken by two gleaming yellow robots. Threatening him, they demand he use his influence with all the world leaders to their master’s advantage. He tries to persuade them he is going straight, but as they turn their weapons towards him, he pretends to agree to their demands…

Synopsis for "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Excalibur #33.

At the BBC studios in London, Captain Britain and Meggan are exploring the set of her favorite soap, in response for an invitation for them to guest star. The Captain spies a poster on the wall, showing all of the dead X-men, which leaves him very unimpressed. Suddenly, there is a flash, and they are under Mesmero’s control.

At Excalibur’s lighthouse, Nightcrawler dives into the sea, trying to restore his teleporting skills by practicing teleporting from the sea back to the lighthouse. His first attempt gets him halfway up, but as he tries again, his injuries cause him to teleport further underwater, where he is saved by Rachel in the nick of time. She takes him back inside, telling him to accept his newfound limitations. She is interrupted by the doorbell. She opens the door and sees Jean Grey before her, as Mesmero takes control.

Upstairs, Kurt is thinking about Kitty, before realising that Widget can’t take them to her in another world because she must already be home on their earth. He sees Captain Britain, and cheerfully goes to tell him the news before the Captain grabs him by the throat. As he is held firm, Mesmero enters and puts Kurt under his control.

At St. Searle’s, Kitty is outside practicing her martial arts. From the bushes, she is spied upon by a group of younger girls, who are soon forced out as Huntsman and her gang arrive. They begin to plot Kitty’s downfall once again.

Later, Kitty is in her room when Miss Rutherford comes to talk to her. After a few moments, the headmistress is called away to speak to the financial council. Sneaking over the rooftops, Kitty follows her, and as she tries to listen in through a grate in the roof she finds Rutherford there before her. Silently, they listen, as the council decides to shut down the school, before Rutherford notices her presence. She leaps on her, but Kitty manages to talk her down, and they begin to understand one another. They come up with a scheme to save the school. They intend to win the cheerleading competition for Britain’s first American football team, and use the winnings to save the school.

In London, the robots have returned to Mesmero, who agrees to go along with their plan, but demands to meet their masters. As the robots leave to consult with them, they are followed by Captain Britain. From the shadows, Mesmero and the rest of Excalibur emerge, as the other Mesmero transforms back into Meggan. He plots to locate and destroy the robots masters, using Excalibur as his private army.

Synopsis for "School Spirit"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Excalibur #34.

At St. Searle’s local railway station, Miss Rutherford waits on the tracks, along with another teacher, Kitty, and Huntsman. She plans to visit Courtney Ross and get her to lend to the school so they can pay their debts. As Miss Rutherford departs on the train, and the other teacher returns to the school, Huntsman whistles, summoning a bunch of students onto the platform. Kitty phones another girl, lying in wait by the school, who, as the teacher passes, blows up a tree that falls and blocks the school’s only access road and takes out the telephone line. With the school sealed off, Kitty phones Paddington station, to ensure that Miss Rutherford is transferred to a train bound for Scotland. As their own train arrives, they all board, and set off for London.

Meanwhile, on a weapons range, Excalibur, under Mesmero’s control, are being tested against a robot army, controlled by a mesmerised Alistaire Stuart. They easily destroy it, and Mesmero is satisfied, at least until a gun is pressed to the side of his head by Brigadier Alysande Stuart. First, he tries to mesmerize her, but when she reveals she is immune, he makes Nightcrawler grab her and knock her out.

On the train to London, some of the girls get into a fight, and a stray punch passes through Kitty. She reveals to the girls her secret identity. Instead of the anger she expected, she is met with awe. The proceedings are cut short as they dive to the floor to avoid Miss Rutherford on the Scotland bound train.

They arrive at the stadium where the competition is being held. As the match gets under way, the girls change into their costumes. They watch as the professional team performs. They take to the field after them and put on an equally stunning performance.

Under the stadium, Mesmero meets with the robots, who reveal their masters, a man and woman who identify themselves as Fenris. They order him to obey them, as they don’t see him as a threat. As Meggan transforms, her muscles swelling, she rips the robots apart. As the rest of Excalibur swoop in, Phoenix is blasted through the roof and out into the sky over the stadium. On the pitch, the girls continue their routine, but when Kitty sees the Phoenix effect, she dives through the ground, finding herself in the men’s changing room. As she dashes outside, she runs into the fight. She tries to phase into one of the robots to disable it for Captain Britain, but she is thrown off by a defensive field around it. The distraction provides enough time for Captain to destroy the robot.

Meanwhile, in the venting, the fight is watched by St. Searle’s students. They call on the rest of the girls, who dash off the pitch to help Excalibur.

Down below, Nightcrawler grabs the female member of Fenris and teleports her away from her brother, remembering their powers only work when they are in contact. As Kitty struggles to her feet, Mesmero stands over her, about to mesmerize her before Lockheed swoops in, sending flames straight at Mesmero, which causes him to lose control of Excalibur. In the distraction, Fenris try to reunite, but the girls from the school manage to capture them before they can. Later, Excalibur are talking to all the girls from St. Searle’s. Miss Rutherford sweeps in, demanding to know why the girls are there. Captain Britain tries to explain, but she shouts him down before Courtney Ross arrives. She has found a solution to the debt problem. The American football team will lease grounds from St. Searle’s at a high enough price to allow the school to pay its debts. As the girls reunite with their headmistress, Kitty reunites with Excalibur.
