Our story begins with Thor rescuing a child from being run over by a speeding truck. On his patrol of the city, Thor receives the telepathic summons of Doctor Strange for his aid. Arriving at Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, he finds Doctor Strange passed out on the ground. Reviving him, Thor learns that Strange was severely weakened after stopping Baron Mordo from casting a spell on the city. Strange loses consciousness, prompting Thor to call for an ambulance and resume his mortal guise of Dr. Blake.

At the hospital, Blake preforms surgery on Doctor Strange. At that moment, Odin attempts to contact Thor telepathically, to ask him to aid his fellow Asgardians in battle. Blake chooses to ignore Odin's summons as he is in the middle of a surgery. This prompts Odin's wrath, causing an electrical storm on Earth that knocks out the power to the hospital. Blake is determined to continue the operation, and in Asgard, Odin leads his warriors into battle without Thor's aid. With Odin gone, Loki transforms himself into a bee and flies past Heimdall and crosses the Bifrost Bridge to Earth.

Later, after Doctor Strange's surgery, Blake checks up on his patient, who offers to repay Blake for saving his life. Blake returns to his office, where Jane Foster shows him to an old man with a lame leg. The old man trips when standing up to greet Blake, so that he keels over and the two drop their canes. Getting back up and grabbing one of the canes and handing the other to Blake, the old man suddenly states that he is well, tossing the cane in his hand out a nearby window. The old man then transforms into Loki, who uses a magic mist to put Jane Foster to sleep. Blake attempts to change into Thor, but soon realizes that during the confusion, Loki had switched canes, and the one that would change him into Thor was tossed out the window. Loki grabs the unconscious Foster and leaps out of the window, taking her hostage.

Blake, unable to find his cane, attempts to contact Odin, who doesn't answer his summons. He then enlists the aid of Doctor Strange, who uses his ectoplasmic form and mystic amulet to find the cane. Blake locates it near the harbor, where a bunch of hobos are using it for a fishing rod. Doctor Strange's ghost form scares the hobos into giving Blake back his cane. With Strange gone, Blake turns into Thor and begins his search for Loki. Meanwhile, Odin returns from battle and, feeling he was too harsh on his son, attempts to contact him again. Thor snaps at Odin for not responding to his request for aid, and tells Odin to leave him be.

During his search for Foster, Thor runs into his fellow Avengers Iron Man, Giant-Man and the Wasp, who offer their aid. Thor turns them down, stating his quest is a private matter. He uses his hammer to locate Loki, who is hiding out in the Adirondack mountains.

Before confronting Loki, Thor contacts Doctor Strange mentally and asks him to use his magic to help save Jane from Loki. Confronting the god of mischief, Thor learns that Loki had banished Foster to Limbo and threatens to destroy her, should Thor attack. Thor battles Loki, until his foe knocks him into a pit that he set as a trap. Then Loki casts as spell that will kill Jane Foster and sends it into Limbo. However, his spell is blocked, due to a counter spell conjured by Doctor Strange.

Thor gets out of the pit and fights Loki into submission, forcing him to return Jane from Limbo. Just before Loki can attack again, a soldier from Asgard sent by Odin arrives and takes Loki back to Asgard. Odin contacts Thor and the two make peace. Thor flies back to the city with Jane, leaving Odin to wonder why his son still loves a mere mortal.

Continued from last issue....

Following their battle against Master Mold and the Sentinels, the X-Men are given medical attention by the military, who commend the Professor and the X-Men for their assistance in destroying the menace. With Cyclops, Beast, and Iceman injured, the Professor allows them to be taken by the military paramedics to the hospital, but mentally cautions his students to protect their secret identities.

At the hospital, the doctors are unsure how to treat Iceman, who is in an unconscious delirium, prompting Professor to worry about this potentially being his first failure. Checking on the other X-Men under the pretext as a casual friend instead of their leader, the Professor overhears a doctor commenting on the fact that they could learn so much more if they knew who the young Mutant's parents are. Finding the Angel flying over a crowd of nurses checking the answering service with the mansion, the Professor is informed by Warren that his parents are coming to visit because they hadn't hear from their son in a while. The Professor calls the Worthingtons and tells them that he's on a "field trip" with his students for materials for a coming research paper. Although the Worthingtons are relieved, they insist on stopping by for a visit for only a few minutes. Concerned, not only over this, but his sense of dread, the Professor sends Warren back to the mansion to scout around.

Warren arrives at the mansion to find no trouble on the grounds, however, upon walking inside he is almost smashed by an axe which suddenly levitates out of the hand of a decorative suit of armor and smashes into the wall. Flying through the mansion, the Angel accidentally flies into a mirror and knocks himself out. His strange attacker watches, lurking in the shadows, boasting that this is the first of the X-Men he will defeat.

Back at the hospital, a doctor is almost done his examination of Cyclops, wanting to finish up by examining his eyes. Cyclops gives him a demonstration of his powerful optic blasts, explaining that he cannot control them. Finding no other problems with the young mutant, the doctor dismisses Cyclops into the Professor's care and the two walk the grounds discussing the state of the other X-Men. The Professor has lost mental contact with Angel and decides that Beast and Marvel Girl should remain at the hospital to watch over Iceman, who is still too injured to move. The Professor and Cyclops agree to return to the Mansion.

There they find no sign of Warren, and are suddenly startled when Cerebro's mutant alarm goes off. Going to investigate, the Professor examines his computer and learns that there is a super-powerful evil mutant on the premises. Before Cyclops can warn him, the Professor is suddenly wrapped up in the coils of a mental-wave distorter and sealed behind a transparent shield. Cyclops attempts to blast through it with his optic blast, but finds it redirected against him.

The lights then go out and Cyclops is attacked by their foe in the darkness. Unable to see his foe, Cyclops is easily felled in hand-to-hand combat against their unknown attacker. Back at the hospital, Beast has totally recovered from his injuries, which he shows off for Marvel Girl. Jean is concerned about the Professor and also decides to check on Bobby. When they find that Iceman is still in a coma, the two decide to venture to the mansion to see what's happened to the Professor and the others.

Arriving at the mansion, they rush into the front door and are shocked to find that the entire inside hallway has been coated with a friction-less surface. Beast suddenly slides across the room and into a specially prepared room. Jean manages to avoid the same fate by using her telekinetic powers. She is then confronted by their mystery foe, whom she recognizes immediately. Trying to keep him back with her telekinetic powers, she passes out after inhaling odorless sleep gas. Back at the hospital, the doctor caring for Iceman is called into the mutant's room because his pulse is getting weaker and he's becoming more delirious. With no other choice, the doctor decides to try a new experimental sulfa drug on Iceman and sends the nurse to go and get it.

Back at the mansion, the X-Men's mysterious attacker seals them in an enclosure of a high altitude balloon and sets it loose with the hopes that they will perish in the sky when they float up to 100,000 feet into the air. Releasing the X-Men into the air, the villain is satisfied that he has finally destroyed the X-Men. Shortly after, the Worthingtons arrive to visit their son; however, when they knock at the door they are greeted by the man who attacked the X-Men; none other than Magneto!

Mr. Opposite has the power to make people behave in unaccustomed ways. He tests out his power on some policemen and an unwitting bank clerk, who gives him some of the bank's money. He draws the attention of Johnny Future. Mush later, Johnny investigates a disturbance caused by some people under Mr. Opposite's influence. Mr. Opposite encourages some (different) policemen to attack Johnny. Johnny ponders his dilemma. Should he allow himself to be arrested? Or should he resist the policemen and risk tarnishing his reputation as a hero?

While testing an underwater breathing apparatus, Iron Man drives killer sharks out into the ocean. Once he finishes, he returns to Stark Industries. Right below his flying path, Kraven the Hunter and the Chameleon are smuggling themselves back into the country. When they reach the coast, Kraven begins crawling up a cliff when he's spotted by Iron Man and easily defeated. However, Chameleon goes unnoticed and takes this as a chance to prove himself superior to Kraven by defeating Iron Man.

Inside Stark Industries, Happy shows off his new horrendously flashy plaid jacket to Pepper, but he's met with criticism and sarcastic remarks. A heavily wounded Captain America breaks into the building, demanding to see Iron Man. Cap tells Iron Man that while walking down the street, he was lured to a building and captured by the Chameleon, posing as an old man. Using an "electronic thought-transference machine," the Chameleon, had acquired Cap's memories and could impersonate him. Cap had been able to recover from the procedure and escape.

However, as soon as Iron Man leaves to find the Chameleon, the wounded Captain America smirks, and tells himself that his plan has worked. At Avengers Mansion, the Golden Avenger encounters the real Captain America, but Tony attacks, believing him to be the Chameleon. Cap runs away from his friend while trying to reason with him, to no avail. Captain America hits Iron Man, and he buckles rather easily. Tony recalls that he hadn't had the opportunity to recharge his chest device, and that's why he's weak. Iron Man flees in order to recharge, and Captain America simply brushes off the confrontation, thinking that it must've been some sort of prank.

A few minutes later, Happy checks on "Captain America" and finds him gone, so Pepper decides to alert Iron Man. However, Tony is recharging and can't answer the call. Because of that, Pepper decides to find Iron Man herself. When Happy and Pepper borrow one of Stark's cars, they discover a device that acts as a tracer to lead them to Iron Man.

Now fully-charged, the Golden Avenger spots Captain America walking down the street. Cap is forced to hide in a factory, where he encounters a sentry who initially shoots at him, before recognizing his childhood hero. Iron Man breaks through the window and confronts Captain America, still believing him to be the Chameleon. Cap activates a trapdoor below Iron Man, making him fall through a tunnel with gravel. Iron Man escapes from the gravel machine into a room with giant cement mixers, just when Pepper and Happy arrive at the factory. Their vision is impaired by the cement dust, and Happy blindly walks toward the edge of the gravel pit. Cap grabs Happy's wrist as he's falling to save him, making Iron Man wonder if he's truly the Chameleon. Before anything can be cleared up, Pepper falls into a sand pit and is rescued by Iron Man, but not before Happy accidentally leans on a water valve and drenches her.

A steam shovel suddenly threatens Happy and Pepper, but Iron Man easily stops and destroys it with one punch. He wonders how could a shovel move by itself, and Giant-Man appears on the scene showing him its operator, another Captain America. As soon as Giant-Man releases him, the Chameleon is unmasked, clearing up Iron Man's confusion.

The Wasp explains that ants were witnessing the fight between Captain America and Iron Man, and Giant-Man picked up their tone with his cybernetic impulse. When they arrived at the scene, they discovered the Chameleon watching the fight from above, through a skylight. The police arrive shortly after, and the Chameleon is apprehended. Wasp comments on Pepper's wet and ruined hairdo, and she storms out, angry at Happy. Iron Man and Captain America shake it off, but Tony later scolds himself for being fooled by the Chameleon so easily.
