When both the Human Torch and Iceman take the same cruise in New York Harbor, a spat between the elemental supers breaks out over Johnny's date Dorrie Evans. However, their rivalry for the girl's affections ends when the ship is raided by the pirate Captain Barracuda and his men. The two heroes team up and use their powers to take down Barracuda and his crew, but quickly following the battle, Iceman has to leave in order to protect his secret identity. Afterwards, the Torch realizes he has a newfound respect for his polar opposite.

While dreaming about his last battle against the Plantman, Johnny is rudely awakened by a bucket of water being thrown on him by the subject of his dream. After locking the soaking wet Torch in his closet, Plantman robs a nearby hotel and escapes before the Torch can get free and stop him. At the hotel, Torch is met by his girlfriend Doris, who is afraid that Plantman might target her father for revenge once more. While waiting for Plantman's next move, the Torch receives a letter challenging him to a one-on-one duel against Plantman. Battling the villain, the Torch uses weed killer against Plantman's plant attacks. When the Torch finally has Plantman caught, Plantman boasts that he has Doris hostage. The Torch, having guessed Plantman's plan, informs him that he had put Doris under the protection of the Thing, who would prevent any plants from capturing her. Soon the authorities arrive and Plantman is arrested.

Having been paroled for helping out the Avengers, Paste-Pot Pete has spent his freedom creating a new outfit and weapons to make him a more formidable foe. Spotting the Thing flying in a Fantasti-Car, Paste-Pot attacks him and easily subdues Thing and steals his jet. The Torch picks up the anti-theft system on the Fantasti-Car on his ring, and leaves his bowling date with Doris to investigate. He frees the Thing and the two heroes quickly defeat Paste-Pot, and turn him over to the authorities. Returning to the bowling alley, Torch explains the situation to Doris, who forgives him for seeming to stand her up.

When two reporters show up at the Baxter Building to interview Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Girl, the jealous Thing and Torch scare them off. Hearing that Sub-Mariner has been spotted swimming close to shore, the two believe that this is the perfect opportunity to get some much needed publicity. Tracking down the Sub-Mariner, the two hot-heads battle Namor to the point where the furious monarch leaves. Reed and Susan show up to scold the two of them for attacking Namor on their own because Reed was planning to meet with Namor and make peace. To add to the calamity, the two reporters they chased off earlier in the day wanted to interview Susan and Reed in order to write a surprise article about Ben & Johnny.

The Puppet Master and Mad Thinker have teamed up to get revenge on the Fantastic Four. Using the Mad Thinker's plans and the Puppet Master's dolls, they plot to use the Thing to attack the others. However, when the Thing initially attacks the Human Torch, one of his random transformations back into his human form severs the link between the Thing and the Puppet Master's doll. Returning to the Baxter Building, Johnny and Ben seek Reed's help in finding out what happened to cause the Thing to lash out at Johnny. Realizing it's the Puppet Master's doing, Reed builds a device that feeds back the Puppet Master's power, so when he uses his puppet to try and control the Thing again, it backfires, causing an explosion that knocks him out and foils his and the Mad Thinker's plot.

After a training session ends with the Torch complaining about Mr. Fantastic being the leader of the FF, he and the Thing are invited to a charity auto race. While on the route, the two heroes are captured by a mysterious villain who keeps the two heroes on their toes. Admitting defeat, the Torch and Thing realize that they've been fighting Mr. Fantastic in disguise, who set up the whole ruse to teach them a lesson about his group leadership.

Wanting to be free of Magneto's rule, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch decide they should seek the aid of heroes in the United States. Traveling to New York, the two go to seek the help of the Fantastic Four. Unfortunately, the Thing and Human Torch are the only ones home and they have just seen a news bulletin identifying the two mutants as members of Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. A fight soon breaks out that ends with both sides growing weary. Afterward, the two mutants decide that they're safest by Magneto's side, and the two Fantastic Four members allow them to leave.

When the Torch learns that the Terrible Trio are on the loose again, he cuts a golf date with Doris short in order to search for them. The Trio get the drop on the Torch and manage to defeat him and tie him down. However, not before he calls the Thing for help, who is also similarly captured. The two are bound to railroad tracks, but when the oncoming train arrives, the Thing is able to stop it with his feet. Breaking free the two heroes quickly capture the Trio.

When the Human Torch and Thing are asked to stop some crooks who just robbed a bank, they are unaware that this is yet another crime planned by the Mad Thinker. This time to deal with any members of the Fantastic Four who may interfere with his plans, the Thinker has created a giant remote control "Bouncing ball" to attack his foes with. Setting it loose on the two heroes, they are disorientated by the device at first, but the Torch eventually destroys it with his flame powers, and the Thing nabs the bank robbers, foiling the Thinker's plot.
