Chapter 1

Fantastic Four Vol 1 1 0001 Title

A shadowy figure fires a flare out of a window. The flare forms the words "The Fantastic Four!"[Continuity 1]

Susan Storm is having tea with a friend. When she sees the flare, she turns invisible, gets into a cab,[Continuity 2] and offers the surprised driver a banknote when she reaches her destination.

Ben Grimm is trying to find a coat that fits him. A clerk in the haberdashery sees the flare. Grimm bursts out of the too-small door, rips a manhole out of the street, follows the sewers, and bursts out when he thinks he has reached his destination. He is struck by a taxi which is wrecked.

Johnny Storm is working on his latest hot rod in a service station. The mechanic sees the flare, which turns into the number 4. Johnny bursts into flame and flies away, destroying his car. The authorities treat him as an enemy attack, so he reluctantly melts the jets that come after him. A nuclear heat-seeking missile locks onto him, and, just as Johnny's flame starts to fade, an impossibly long pair of arms grab the missile and throw it out to sea.

Johnny's savior is the same man who fired the flare. He greets Susan, Ben, and Johnny with the words, "There is a task that awaits us ... a fearful task!" But how did these four people become so fantastic?

To beat the Communists in the Space Race,[Continuity 3] scientist Reed Richards, sister and brother Sue and Johnny Storm, and pilot Ben Grimm sneak aboard a rocket;[Continuity 4] Ben had warned the others about needing sufficient shielding for cosmic rays, but Sue challenging his courage persuaded him to fly.[Continuity 5] In space, the four are bombarded by cosmic rays.[Continuity 6] The auto-pilot lands the ship back on Earth,[Continuity 7] where they find themselves physically transformed and possessing remarkable new abilities. Sue can turn invisible. Ben has transformed into an orange, muscular "thing" with super-strength.[Continuity 8] Reed's body became highly malleable, allowing him to stretch into any shape. Johnny's body bursts into flame, and he can fly. They decide to use their abilities to become the super-team known as the Fantastic Four. They give themselves the individual names Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Girl, Human Torch, and the Thing.[Continuity 9][Continuity 10][Continuity 11]

(Chapter 2) The Fantastic Four Meet the Mole Man!

Monster Isle

Atomic plants in the Soviet Union, Australia, and South America have been mysteriously attacked by cave-ins. Another attack occurs in Africa, where a huge monster burrows out of the ground but is recalled by a human figure. The Fantastic Four travel aboard their private jet to Monster Isle, which Reed has deduced is the same distance from each attack. There, they are attacked by a giant three-headed monster. Reed stops the monster, but a cave-in separates Reed and Johnny from Ben and Sue. Beneath the island Reed and Johnny land in the Valley of Diamonds, which temporarily blinds them. The Mole Man appears, revealing he is responsible for the attacks.

(Chapter 3) The Mole Man's Secret!

The Mole Man explains his origin. Having been ridiculed by humanity, he went off alone in search of the legendary land at the center of the earth. Eventually, he washed ashore on Monster Isle. Making his way through a cavern, he was caught in an avalanche and rendered almost blind.[Continuity 12] However, due to his other heightened senses taking over, he mastered the subterranean creatures[Continuity 13] and built himself an underground empire.

Meanwhile, on the surface, Ben wrestles a rock monster. Ben and Sue find their teammates listening to the Mole Man's plan to invade the surface world. He sends his monster army against the Fantastic Four. Whilst Johnny distracts the biggest one, the team flees through a tunnel, which Johnny seals shut behind them. After the Fantastic Four escape in their jet, Mole Man destroys the island so the surface world cannot trouble him again.[Continuity 14]

1942

German explorer Erik Jaggar led an expedition into the Tibetan mountains where they discovered a previously undiscovered village. There he and his crew were surprised to find a group of children that strangely had inverted secondary eye-lids as well as the ability to manifest metahuman abilities. Seeing this as an interest to the Nazi party and has all the villagers slaughtered and the children taken from this hidden land.

New York City... the Present...

Reed and Sue Richards are taking their son Franklin off to his first day at his new school, having decided that Franklin needs to interact with children his own age. They have set him up in a private school, but to protect the boy, they have established alter-egos so that Franklin won't be recognised as the son of Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman of the Fantastic Four. En route to the school, Reed and Sue coach their son on his alter-ego, telling him that his name at school will be Richard Franklin. Soon they are being shown around the facilities at the Stern Academy by Carmine Stern, the principal of the school. Franklin finds this whole new experience to be daunting, especially when he is introduced to his new teacher -- Miss Candy -- and her class. With Franklin taken care of, Reed and Sue head back to the city, but Sue is concerned if they are making the right decision for their son, especially since they are hiding their identities. However, Reed insists that it is for Franklin's well being.

On their way they notice a light in the sky over the city and are soon contacted by a representative of the United Nations who informs them that the alien ship is requesting permission to land at the UN Building. Reed knows exactly who it is that is arriving and tells the UN to accept the landing and that he and the rest of the Fantastic Four will greet the visitors. Converting their car for flight, Reed flies back into the city, en route they spot Ben out with Damage Control's Kathleen O'Mara. Suspecting that something is up, Ben is quickly picked up by Sue with an invisible force bubble. As Ben is being carried across the city he takes the chance to transform back into the Thing so he is prepared for whatever will come, joking about how humiliating it is to be changing in front of the entire city.

Meanwhile, at the United Nations, the alien ship has landed just outside the front steps and from within emerges the Fantastic Four's long time allies the Inhuman royal family. With the authorities surrounding their ship, Medusa approaches them to tell them that they have come in peace and are seeking asylum on the planet Earth. However before she can explain any further, another ship suddenly materialises above them and opens fire, blowing up the Inhumans ship. However instead of incinerating everything in the vicinity the exploding ship is contained in an invisible force field erected by Sue as the three members of the Fantastic Four arrive on the scene. At that moment the attackers, alien bounty hunters under the command of a creature calling himself Sandorr, teleport out of the ship and resume their assault the Inhumans directly. As the royal family defends themselves from their alien foes, the Fantastic Four lend a hand to their allies. Out numbered and over powered, Sandorr orders an immediate retreat and they all teleport away, all save for one of their members -- a Chameleoid named Mistur who manages to blend into the scenery with his shapeshifting powers. As the alien ship tries to leave Earth orbit it is blown up by a secret military satellite. Watching the destruction from a base on Earth, the soldiers rejoice their victory. To celebrate, a seemingly innocuous female soldier tells the others that she is going to get some campaign to celebrate. While back in the city, Mistur tries to slip away in human form. However his attempts to flee the scene are interrupted by two Vault Guardsmen who were able to track him with information they learned about shapeshifting from a captured Skrull. Before Mistur can defend himself he is blasted into unconsciousness by the two Guardsmen.

Elsewhere the Inhumans and the Fantastic Four discuss what is going on. Medusa explains that there is a bounty on the heads of the royal family after the Inhumans were enslaved by the Kree and Black Bolt was forced into being used in a pawn in an attempt to assassinate the Shi'ar Magistrix Lilandra. However while Black Bolt managed to avoid this and defeat Ronan the Accuser in battle, the Inhumans abandoned the royal family to find their destiny among the stars leaving them rulers of an empty kingdom. Trying to find a place in the world they had decided to try and seek asylum on their homeworld of Earth. The grim news is interrupted by the arrival of Crystal and Lockjaw who had just heard of her family's return to Earth and they are happily reunited. Crystal is also surprised to see that Sue is pregnant again. When Crystal asks where Johnny is, she is informed by the Thing that Johnny has a new acting job that has been keeping him busy.

In a desert shooting location Hawk Productions is currently working on a film adaptation of the life of the frontier hero known as the Rawhide Kid, with Johnny playing the lead role. As Johnny checks how he looks in the mirror wearing his Rawhide Kid costume he is told that shooting will begin in 15 minutes. While at the Vault Prison in Colorado, Mistur awakens to find himself prisoner. He is questioned by the military as to what his purpose is on Earth. Mistur explains how he was seeking revenge against the Inhumans botched attempt to assassinate Lilandra which resulted in the death of a fellow Chameleod who posed as Lilandra to thwart the attempt. When the soldier -- and his female assistant -- learn that only Mistur and his crew knew the Inhumans were on Earth, they prepare to leave. The female assistant convinces the guards that this alien is a threat to their families and orders it destroyed. As the two Guardsmen prepare to eliminate their alien prisoner, the woman watches, relaxing her eyes enough for her secondary eye lids to become visible.

World War II

The strange empowered children found on a Nazi expedition of the mountains of Tibet have been brought back to Germany for tests. There they become part of what is known as the Loki Project. Scientists work around the clock to try and condition these super-powered children to fight for the Nazis. When a commanding officer comes to check on the progress he learns that one of these children is particularly strong willed. When he demands that she is broken in, the young girl uses her powers to try and kill him. Prepared for this the Nazi scientists activate her inhibitor collar, causing the young girl extreme pain.

The Present

.... This young girl has grown to become a woman and is now within the United States military. Her reflections into her past end as she sits in on a meeting with military brass and Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four. Richards is explaining to them the cause of the recent alien attack on New York City -- a group of bounty hunters hired by the Shi'ar to assassinate the Inhumans for their attempts on the life of their empress while they were enslaved by the Kree. Reed scolds the men gathered for using lethal force against the escaping aliens as their deaths could spark an intergalactic war. The military men are convinced that word will never get back to the bounty hunters superiors because they have confirmed that the entire crew of the escaping ship was atomised. Reed then plays back video from the battle between these bounty hunters and the Inhumans and Fantastic Four. The footage shows that while five aliens teleported into the battle. only four teleported out, and points out that one of them somehow escaped. The top soldier in the room tells Richards that they will find the alien and deal with it in the same way they deal with all aliens hiding among them. The irony of this statement is not lost on the young woman who smirks from across the table.

Reed points out that their "purist" ideals are in line with such racist groups as the Klu Klux Klan or the Nazis and reminds the men gathered that such thinking has always led to those groups downfalls. However, Reed still believes that the alien should be captured and informs them that he has constructed a device at his Baxter Building headquarters that will allow him to track the alien. The commanding officer tells Reed that the alien must be stop before it reaches an "alien underground" which he believes exists. It's then that Reed learns that the military is bringing in the second phase of a secret project to contain aliens that are active on their planet, Reed wants to know what they are talking about.

Meanwhile, on the set of Hawk Production's Rawhide Kid movie, Johnny begins his first scenes portraying the legendary gunslinger. The scene calls for Johnny to rescue an actress playing Rawhide's girlfriend from an outlaw. While Johnny aces the action sequence, he continues to flub his lines during a romantic speech afterword. With each cut, Johnny does worse and worse and his stress over the situation causes him to begin losing control of his powers. Eventually, director Bob Diamond, calls a halt to production and scolds Johnny for being so terrible at his lines. Johnny tells him he needs to cool off and flames on to fly away. Mister Hawk, the Producer tells assures Bob that the constantly burned costumes are in the budget and returns to his trailer. There he is greeted by his special effects artist, Lon Zelig, Coming to terms with the fact that the Human Torch is a bad actor, Lon shapeshifts into the Rawhide Kid and suggests that he himself take over the roll.

While back at the Baxter Building in New York, the Invisible Woman holds a press conference introducing the world to the Inhumans and explaining their intentions for finding asylum on Earth. One of the reporters is secretly one of the strange children from the war who listens as Sue explains that two of the Inhumans -- Medusa and Crystal -- have even been members of the Fantastic Four in the past. Soon the floor is opened for questions and the reporters begin asking increasingly xenphobic questions about their intentions. Soon their fear an hysteria beak down the line of questioning into racist tirades about the Inhumans less than human appearances. Suddenly the scene explodes into violence when one of the reporters tries to throw his microphone at Medusa. When Black Bolt uses his powers to destroy the object the reporters suddenly give into their hatred and try to rush the stage. Sue holds the mob back until the Baxter Buildings security systems kick in and force them out. However as the now-adult children, who have influences within the media, begin spreading propaganda across the airwaves, soon the people of New York City begin to believe that the Fantastic Four are traitors to the human race. A mob begins to form around the Fantastic Four's headquarters, vandalising it and shouting anti-Inhuman rants.

Earlier that day, Ben Grimm had reverted back to human form and has been using Reed's device to track the missing alien from the site of the battle at the United Nations. He gets as far as the alley where it was captured. There he finds evidence of a battle when he is suddenly ambushed by some Guardsmen. When they attack him, Ben reverts back to his Thing form. However the blasts emitted from their gauntlets hamper Ben's powers and he only transforms half way. Although Ben manages to hold his own against the two men, he is suddenly blasted from behind by Senso, the mystery woman who attacked him some time ago.

At that moment Mister Fantastic is addressing the United Nations about the situation with the Inhumans. Reed explains to them how he knows about their efforts to contain aliens that come to Earth and expresses his hopes that this is merely a phase. He reminds the assembled world leaders of how some aliens who have come to Earth have also doubled as its protectors, pointing out the original Captain Marvel and the Silver Surfer as prime examples. He also reminds them that the thunder god Thor walks among mortal men, pointing out that those with powers beyond those of mortal men and women walk the Earth regardless. He then stresses that the Inhumans should be entitled to sanctuary on Earth because it is the planet of their birth. Unaware that the strange beings have also infiltrated the United Nations and are influencing people here as well, Reed is upset to hear the leaders of the world deny the Inhumans sanctuary for a plethora of reasons, all of them out of fear. Reed is suddenly shocked when one member of the United Nations speaks up and offers the Inhumans sanctuary, the ruler of the nation of Latveria, the Fantastic Four's greatest foe, Doctor Doom.
