Synopsis for 1st story
The residents of New Atlantis, possessed by the Undying Ones, drag a drowning Lyra deeper under the waves. Suddenly she realizes she can breathe -- a spell by Doctor Strange has given her gills. She shakes off her attackers and rejoins Strange, Namor, the Silver Surfer, and Loa: Strange is riding in a bubble of oxygen and the others seem perfectly at home in the water. But the New Atlanteans, under the command of the Nameless One in the body of Tiger Shark, overrun them and force a rout. The Defenders are scattered.
The Surfer looks for Loa, who was overwhelmed by the possessed New Atlanteans. He finds her, but she proves to be Tyrak in disguise. Their battle is brief and ends when Surfer blasts Tyrak in his right eye.
Lyra sits in meditation in a ruined building. Tiger Shark mocks her for "praying," but she explains that she becomes stronger when she is calm and focused. She knocks him through the wall.
Loa and Strange are searching for the device or artifact that the Undying Ones are using as their bridge to this world. As it turns out, it is not a "what" but a "who" -- Aradnea, a sorceress claiming to be born and bred for the role. With the Fear helping her efforts, she is too strong for Strange, but he is saved when Loa strikes the woman in the back with Namor's trident. Strange quickly seizes Aradnea by the throat and performs an exorcising spell that banishes the Undying Ones from their world, but the effort leaves him exhausted and feeling faint. The sorceress takes the trident and attacks him from the back, only to be killed, then disintegrated, by Loa's mutant power.
The Defenders rejoice in their success at taking back New Atlantis, but Namor is quick to remind them that they haven't won until they defeat Attuma.
