History
Origins[]
The birth of the Grendel symbiote.
The symbiote dragon that later became known as the Grendel was created billions of years ago by Knull, alongside a crimson symbiote dragon manifested from Knull's blood.[4] Sent out into the cosmos, the two symbiote dragons rampaged across the cosmos for billions of years, slaughtering pantheons of gods and driving the inhabitants of countless civilizations insane before devouring them.[5][1]
Viking Age[]
In the sixth century CE, the two symbiote dragons arrived on Earth and established a lair in a cave hidden behind a waterfall in Denmark. They embarked on a campaign of slaughter to subjugate the planet, razing entire cities to the ground and ravenously devouring any wildlife and humans they came across.[6] At some point following their arrival on Earth, a cannibalistic cult formed and began worshiping the symbiote dragons, erecting grotesque monuments in reverence of them.[7]
Mistaken for the monstrous dark elf called Grendel,[8] the black symbiote dragon - which was being remote-piloted by Knull - began laying siege to Heorot Hall. Attacked by the Asgardian thunder god Thor Odinson, the Grendel attempted to kill him but was struck by Thor's divine lightning and trapped inside a glacier;[9][1][10][11] forming the basis of the legend of Beowulf slaying a dragon.[12]
Old Norse carvings depicting this battle were made by the symbiote-worshiping cult and reveal that pieces of the Grendel's living abyss fell to earth after its defeat and bonded to human hosts, bestowing the cult with knowledge of Knull and the symbiotes.[13]

Grendel's frozen body
In 1965,[14] the Grendel's frozen body was discovered by S.H.I.E.L.D.,[10] who excavated it and extracted samples of its living abyss to study. Upon determining that the living abyss could transform living beings into predatory monsters, S.H.I.E.L.D. - under direction from the US government to create a replacement for Captain America - established the Sym-Soldier Program, a super-soldier program headed by Nick Fury.[5][15]
Upon realizing the Grendel was still alive, S.H.I.E.L.D. immediately began searching for a way to kill it, subjecting it to torturous experiments. However, they were unsuccessful and these efforts only sent its enraged offshoots on a killing spree in Vietnam.[10] After its offshoots were subdued, the Sym-Soldier Program was deemed a failure and shut down, with the Grendel being placed into storage in a remote S.H.I.E.L.D. facility alongside them.[5]
Modern Era[]
Having appropriated the shuttered Sym-Soldier Program's research and personnel, Weapon Plus established the Weapon V super-soldier program and began using samples of the Grendel symbiote to engineer suits of symbiote bio-armor, eventually learning how to sever their connection to the hive-mind.[14]
Following the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D.,[9] the Grendel and its offshoots were being transported to a top-secret location to be disposed of. After Venom interrupted the transport, the Grendel was awakened by Knull and reclaimed all but one of the offshoots extracted by the Sym-Soldier Program.[5] The Grendel began rampaging across Manhattan, withstanding attempts by the NYPD and United States Army to defeat it. Confronted by Venom and Spider-Man, the Grendel attempted to devour them and swallowed Miles, who unleashed his bioelectric Venom Blast from inside it. Destabilized, the Grendel collapsed and Knull used its living abyss to manifest an avatar.[16] Knocking Miles unconscious, Knull reformed the Grendel around himself, Spider-Man, and Eddie Brock - distracting the latter by telling him the history of the symbiotes - and flew into space; intent on locating and recovering its missing pieces and using it to free himself from Klyntar.[1]
After Venom merged with one of the Grendel's missing pieces, the Tyrannosaurus symbiote, it connected to the Hive-Mind and called out to Knull. The Grendel attacked Rex's base and attempted to devour Venom again, but was destabilized using the Jury's sonic grenades. Knull's manifestation managed to rip the Venom and Tyrannosaurus symbiotes from Eddie and tried to assimilate them into the Grendel symbiote, but Eddie detonated all the sonic grenades at once. With Knull's manifestation weakened by the resulting explosion, the Tyrannosaurus symbiote was able to rebel and drag him into the blast furnace; sacrificing itself to immolate the Grendel symbiote and seemingly killing Knull in the process.[17]

Bonded to Cletus Kasady and in the thrall of Knull
A surviving piece of the Grendel, still connected to Knull, was obtained by the Maker and later stolen by the Cult of Knull, who bonded it to the corpse of Cletus Kasady in the hope that Knull would be able to use Kasady--who the cult revered as the dark god's apostle--as a vessel. Instead, Kasady overcame Knull's control and the piece of the Grendel was taken over by the Carnage symbiote's consciousness after Kasady tore out and consumed Scorn's spine to assimilate her codices, resurrecting and imbuing it with a sliver of Knull's power.[13][18]
Legacy[]

A small piece of the Grendel symbiote-dragon survived and was harvested by the Maker's organization, Project Oversight, before being stolen from his lab by the symbiote-worshipping cult and being bonded to Cletus Kasady.[19][13] This also led to the symbiote's consciousness being overtaken by that of the Carnage symbiote. Cletus would go on a rampage to get enough codices to free Knull. He would finish his conquest while dying at the hands of Eddie Brock, who would absorb the codices, finally reconnecting Knull to the hive-mind and freeing him from his Klyntar.[20]
Additional samples of the Grendel symbiote remained in the possession of the Weapon V Program, which was attacked by Carnage and shut down during his rampage;[14] later restarted under Dr. Randall Pierce.[21]
The offshoot that had bonded to Cletus was absorbed into the Venom symbiote by Eddie Brock[22], but resurfaced after a few weeks. Unknown to Eddie, the symbiote was now being piloted by the codex of Cletus Kasady and attempted to take over Eddie's body. When Eddie travelled to the Isla de Huesos to destroy it, Carnage separated itself from him, assimilated the Venom symbiote, and attempted to take over Eddie - intending to use him to pick up where he had left off. While the Dark Carnage symbiote was successful in taking over Eddie, Dylan Brock - the son of Eddie Brock, who had the power to control symbiotes - helped his father by transforming Venom into the form of a Tyrannosaurus rex. With Dylan's help, Eddie overcame the Dark Carnage symbiote's influence and separated from it, rebonding to the Venom symbiote. Although it was seemingly destroyed by Dylan, the Dark Carnage symbiote survived and left the island in the form of a shark.[23] When Eddie killed Knull and became the new God of the Symbiotes, he sentenced Carnage to execution, with the Dark Carnage symbiote being devoured by symbiote-augmented sharks.[24] Although a part of Carnage survived and managed to rebuild its biomass.[25]
Iterations and Offshoots[]
At multiple points in time, samples/pieces of the Grendel has been removed and used to create offshoots.
- Tyrannosaurus and Sym-Soldiers - During the Vietnam War, S.H.I.E.L.D. excavated the body of an alien dragon made of living darkness, which they codenamed Grendel. As part of a series of clandestine supersoldier programs intended to replace the MIA Captain America, a team led by Nick Fury began experimenting on extracted samples of its biomass. Discovering that the samples could be bonded to lifeforms to create predatory monsters, S.H.I.E.L.D. immediately proceeded to human trials by bonding samples to a group of wounded soldiers. Due to their symbiotes still being connected to Knull's hive-mind, the Sym-Soldiers rampaged across Vietnam before eventually being subdued and put in stasis alongside the Grendel.[5] One of the offshoots, codenamed Tyrannosaurus, escaped being captured and took on its host's appearance and personality.[10] Decades later, Knull re-awakened the Grendel and reabsorbed the captured Sym-Soldiers' symbiotes into it;[5] while the Tyrannosaurus symbiote ultimately sacrificed itself in an attempt to destroy the Grendel by dragging it into a smelting furnace.[17]
- Weapon V Sym-Suits - After the Sym-Soldier Program was declared a failure by S.H.I.E.L.D. and officially shut down, Weapon Plus surreptitiously took over and rebranded the initiative as "Weapon V" or "Project Venom" - appropriating personnel, research, and symbiote samples while crediting Fury as the founder. Over the next few decades, Weapon V closely monitored subsequent U.S. Government-initiated offshoots of the Sym-Soldier Program such as Project Rebirth 2.0 and the Mercury Team, appropriating research and technology from them. Learning from their successes and failures, Weapon V determined that the Sym-Soldier prototypes had been corrupted by the symbiote hive-mind and were able to create lobotomized suits of bio-armor virally-altered to be free of the contamination. Dark Carnage decimated Weapon V's headquarters seeking to restore his symbiote's connection to the Hive-Mind by consuming the codices of as many hosts as possible, slaughtering the personnel and operatives. This led to Weapon V being put on hold and its symbiote samples being put into storage until the threat posed by Dark Carnage passed,[14] Samples of Mars Team's Sym-Suits were obtained by Alchemax, which used them to mass-produce Anti-Venom battle-suits.[26]

Bonded to Cletus Kasady as Dark Carnage
- Dark Carnage - Despite Tyrannosaurus' attempt to immolate it, a small piece of the Grendel survived and was obtained by the Maker before being stolen by the Cult of Knull.[19] One of the high-ranking members of the cult, Scorn, bonded the remaining piece of the Grendel to Cletus Kasady's corpse in hopes that Knull would be able to use him as an avatar, reanimating the serial killer and causing him to take on an appearance similar to Venom and the Sym-Soldiers' berserk forms. After Knull's connection to the symbiote was severed, it's consciousness was overtaken by that of the original Carnage symbiote,[13] gaining a white spiral on its forehead and dragon emblem on its chest as its connection to the Hive-Mind grew stronger.[27] When its full power was almost-fully restored, the Dark Carnage symbiote took on a demonic appearance - with horns, pauldrons, and arm-wraps resembling Knull's.[28] After temporarily being assimilated by the Venom symbiote it lost the codices it had absorbed,[29] afterwards being more-or-less identical looking to the original Carnage symbiote's previous form.[30] Piloted by Cletus Kasady's codex, it bonded to a great white shark but was eventually torn apart and eaten by a horde of symbiotes controlled by Venom, who had killed Knull and become the new King in Black.[24] Surviving, it would go on a crusade to create a rival Hive to oppose Eddie's.[25] From this point on, the symbiote is treated as the original Carnage symbiote in both body and mind. Its status as a physical offshoot of the Grendel has not been brought up since Venom Island.
Dark Carnage Offshoots: Like the Grendel symbiote, the Dark Carnage symbiote developed the ability to create offshoots of itself.[31] Despite having the consciousness of the original Carnage symbiote, Dark Carnage's offshoots behaved like the original Grendel's offshoots rather than the original Carnage's offshoots[32]. This meant that while they could be produced and controlled by Cletus Kasady (in emulation of Knull),[33] these offshoots had their own distinct consciousness and were not just extensions of the main symbiote[32]. Unlike the main body of the Dark Carnage symbiote while it was bonded to Cletus Kasady, these offshoots were still vulnerable to heat and sonics.[34] These offshoots are listed separately from the original Grendel's offshoots to acknowledge that they were created from the portion of the Grendel overtaken by the Carnage symbiote.
- Brain-Worms - Infecting the maggots infesting his corpse with offshoots of his symbiote, Cletus was able to control people and animals by burrowing the symbiote-maggots into their brains,[31] as well as use them as vectors to transfer the symbiote offshoots to new hosts in order to turn them into monsters.[27][34] Cletus used these "brain-worms" to seize control of the populace of the Underground City in San Francisco, numerous homeless people throughout the United States, and various animals - using them to hunt down former symbiote hosts.[31]
- Eric Morell's Offshoot - Following his second conquest of Doverton, Colorado, Cletus Kasady had his followers abduct Eric Morrell and bonded him to an offshoot of the Dark Carnage symbiote in order to create a codex, which he then absorbed by ripping out Morrell's spine and eating it.[35]
- John Jameson's Offshoot - When John Jameson attempted to rescue Eric Morrell, Cletus infected him with an offshoot of his symbiote and forced him to capture Misty Knight.[35] Enslaved to Dark Carnage's will, Jameson was forced to lay a trap for Spider-Man and Venom,[27] and was commanded to assist in sacrificing Misty to the resurrected Demagoblin.[36] Misty's escape and Deadpool burning down Ravencroft nearly lead to Dark Carnage killing Man-Wolf, but he decided to give him a final chance to prove himself by sending Jameson and Demagoblin to kill Misty. Jameson ultimately managed to break free of Dark Carnage's control, and his symbiote was removed and destroyed by the Aberrant Crimes Division of the FBI.[37]

- Chewie's Offshoot - Seeking Carol Danvers' codex from when she'd been bonded to the Venom symbiote, Cletus infected her pet Flerken]], Chewie, with an offshoot of the Dark Carnage symbiote.[38] When Danvers returned from a mission in space, Cletus remote-piloted Chewie to attack her. Danvers attempted to rip the symbiote off Chewie like she once did to the Venom symbiote when it was bonded to Mac Gargan, but Chewie overpowered Danvers and swallowed her whole. Using the symbiote to create an avatar, Dark Carnage battled Captain Marvel within the Flerken's inner world; but Danvers managed to free Chewie from the symbiote. This offshoot of the Dark Carnage symbiote attempted to take over Captain Marvel and nearly succeeded, but was immolated by her Binary powers just before it could assume full control of her body.[39]

- Carnage Doppelgängers - Attacking the Ravencroft Institute, Cletus infected many of the inmates with offshoots of his symbiote to turn them into four-armed monsters.[27] Unleashed across Manhattan, the Carnage Doppelgängers served as Dark Carnage's shock-troops, devouring civilians or infecting them with more offshoots to turn them into new Carnage Doppelgängers.[33] Most of the hosts from Ravencroft - being violent criminals - willingly embraced their symbiotes and followed Dark Carnage's orders without resistance.[40] After Cletus was killed by Eddie Brock, these offshoots became inert and seemingly perished, sloughing off their hosts.[22]

- Norman Osborn's Offshoot - Amused that Norman Osborn believed himself to be the real Cletus Kasady after his stint as the Red Goblin,[33] Dark Carnage bonded him to an offshoot of his symbiote - turning him into a replica of Cletus' original appearance as Carnage.[27] Despite some friction between them over which of them was the real Cletus Kasady, Norman - as Carnage - served as Dark Carnage's lieutenant during his attack on Manhattan.[33] Sent after his grandson Normie Osborn to get his codex, Norman was instead met by his son Harry Osborn, who was aware of what was going on and attempted to keep his father occupied. Norman's original personality tried to reassert itself, though Cletus' persona remained in control. Eventually, Harry exploded the apartment, causing Norman fall into the sewers. Angered by Norman's hesitation, the symbiote berated and threatened to leave him, with Norman insisting he was the real Cletus Kasady. The Dark Carnage offshoot tried to abandon him and bond to a utility worker, Norman killing him and his partner. Satisfied that Norman was embracing his new persona, stating that he killed them for no reason much like the real Cletus would do, the symbiote returned to him. After Dark Carnage revealed to Norman that he was the real Cletus Kasady, Norman sought the help of Dr. Treadwell, who had worked at Ravencroft and tried to help Norman resist Cletus' persona. While Treadwell insisted that he give up the symbiote in order to get the help he needed, the Dark Carnage offshoot appeared behind him and killed him. The symbiote ordered Norman to rest and let it assume from now on.[41] When Dark Carnage's attack on the city commenced, Norman was subsequently sent after the Scorpion and Deadpool to claim their codices.[33][42] When Dark Carnage attacked Rex Strickland's warehouse, where the heroes had holed up, Carnage was sent after Normie Osborn and Dylan Brock.[43] When Norman was knocked unconscious by Spider-Man thanks to the help of Kindred,[44] his symbiote - controlled by Dark Carnage - separated from him to finish the job. Before it could attack them, Dylan used his newly awakened powers to blow it apart.[22]
- Miles Morales' Offshoot - When Miles Morales attempted to protect the Scorpion from the Carnageized Norman Osborn, Osborn and several Carnage Doppelgängers infected him with an offshoot of the Dark Carnage symbiote that overwhelmed Miles' will and seized control of his body, transforming him into a unique six-armed Carnage Doppelgänger.[45][46] Attacking and initially overpowering Venom, Carnagized Spider-Man was knocked aside, though Eddie prevented the angry Venom symbiote from killing him.[45] Taken to Dark Carnage, the Carnagized Spider-Man was sent alongside a four-armed Carnage Doppelgänger born from Dan Andrews to kill J. Jonah Jameson, though Silver Sable's intervention allowed Miles to overpower the symbiote's will and lead the Dan Andrews Carnage Doppelgänger away. However, when Silver Sable attacked them Miles succumbed to the symbiote's bloodlust, and Carnagized Spider-Man easily beat Silver Sable before attempting to eat Jameson.[32] Miles managed to force the symbiote off himself with a Venom strike, and it bonded to J. Jonah Jameson; attempting to return to Dark Carnage so that he could reabsorb it and devour its host's codex. However, Miles managed to separate it from Jameson and willingly rebonded to it in order to use it against Dark Carnage - managing to overcome its will with his own and causing it to adopt a less monstrous appearance.[47] Miles apparently succumbed to the symbiote again, attacking Eddie Brock during the Cult of Knull' assault on Rex Strickland's warehouse. However, the symbiote was killed when Eddie channeled a surge of electricity through Captain America's shield, freeing Miles.[28]
- Jackson Arvad's Offshoot - Broken out of Ravencroft Institute by the Cult of Knull, Will O' The Wisp agreed to serve Dark Carnage and was bonded to an offshoot of the Dark Carnage symbiote alongside Conundrum and Freak. To prove their loyalty, the three supervillains were tasked with hunting down Deadpool to claim his codex. Will O' The Wisp attempted to hypnotize Deadpool into cutting out his own spine, but was tricked and stabbed in the heart.[48] When next seen he was restored to humanity, indicating his symbiote perished along with most of the other offshoots with Dark Carnage's death.[49]
- Conundrum's Offshoot - Broken out of Ravencroft Institute by the Cult of Knull, Conundrum agreed to serve Dark Carnage and was bonded to an offshoot of the Dark Carnage symbiote alongside Will O' The Wisp and Freak. To prove their loyalty, the three supervillains were tasked with hunting down Deadpool to claim his codex. Conundrum was the first to be defeated, being impaled by Deadpool's katana.[48] When next seen he was restored to humanity, indicating his symbiote perished along with most of the other offshoots with Dark Carnage's death.[49]
- Freak's Offshoot - Broken out of Ravencroft Institute by the Cult of Knull, Freak agreed to serve Dark Carnage and was bonded to an offshoot of the Dark Carnage symbiote alongside Will O' The Wisp and Conundrum. To prove their loyalty, the three supervillains were tasked with hunting down Deadpool to claim his codex. Freak survived the longest but was seemingly killed when Deadpool overtaxed his adaptational ability, causing his body to explode.[48] Freak survived and regenerated, but his symbiote seemingly perished along with most of the other offshoots with Dark Carnage's death.[49]

- Dylan Brock's Offshoot - A sliver of the Norman Osborn's offshoot of the Dark Carnage symbiote was retrieved by Dylan Brock, who secretly kept it as a souvenir. However, this drew the attention of the dark god Knull, who began haunting Dylan's dreams through his Dylan's nascent connection to the Symbiote Hive-Mind.[50] When Sleeper confronted Dylan over it and rebuked his belief that he could tame it, Dylan sought to use it to amplify his connection to the Symbiote Hive-Mind so that he could confront Knull. The piece of the Dark Carnage symbiote tried to bond to him but was repelled and psychically tortured.[51] Witnessing Eddie Brock getting taken over by the Dark Carnage symbiote through the Hive-Mind, Dylan used his piece of the symbiote to open a portal into the Symbiote Hive-Mind and remote-piloted the Venom symbiote in an attempt to save his father.[51] However, Dylan was overwhelmed by Dark Carnage, who seized control of the offshoot and attempted to use it to take over him. With Eddie's encouragement, Dylan was able to resist Dark Carnage's will and ripped the offshoot off before using his powers to destroy it.[52]

- Island of Bones Offshoots - In its grudge-match against Eddie Brock after assimilating the Venom symbiote, the Dark Carnage symbiote bonded offshoots of itself to all the wildlife on the Isla de Huesos;[50] though these offshoots re-amalgamated in order to take over Eddie.[53]

Princess in hyena form
- Princess - In the wake of Cletus Kasady's attempted massacre of New York, the Harrower obtained multiple samples of the Dark Carnage symbiote and began experimenting on them using her powers, attempting to create a clone of Carnage loyal to her. Deciding that Deadpool would make a suitable incubator due to his healing factor, the Harrower implanted him with (at least) two samples of the symbiote, one of which eventually burst from his body in the form of a pair of extra arms.[54] Kept suppressed by Symbiote Inhibitor serum formulated by Valentine Vuong, the symbiote was unleashed by Harrower and used Deadpool's healing factor to gestate a clone of Cletus Kasady.[55] However, a second sample emerged shortly after, devouring Kasady and assuming the form of a colossal hyena - which Deadpool mistook for a dog.[56]

Weaknesses
Electricity: It is particularly vulnerable to high voltages of electricity - being incapacitated by Thor's divine lightning and Miles Morales' bio-electric Venom Blast, which caused it to temporarily destabilize and unravel into an amorphous mass.[3][1]
Sonic and Heat: Like most symbiotes, the Grendel was vulnerable to heat and sound, though to a much lesser degree than most symbiotes.[1] In its dragon form it was capable of withstanding incendiary missiles fired at it by the US army;[3] and the Sym-Soldiers bonded to offshoots of the Grendel symbiote were capable of withstanding napalm flamethrowers, but were incapacitated by the explosion of Nick Fury's LMD during the Vietnam War.[10] Venom was able to use sonic grenades to temporarily incapacitate it, and almost destroyed it using a steel-smelting blast furnace, which Eddie described as "feeling like touching the sun."[17] Additionally, other symbiote-dragons were slain by the Silver Surfer conjuring stars within their bodies.[59][60]Paraphernalia

- The Grendel in its draconic form and its fellow symbiote-dragons resemble the Black Berserkers created by Gorr using the All-Black symbiote, being hostless entities manifested from living abyss.
- Despite being referred as Grendel, the character has no similarities to the actual mythological Grendel. It seems that the character was confused with the Dragon, who is unrelated to Grendel and his mother.
