History

Bernard Riggley was the owner of the Brooklyn Badgers, a professional baseball team which had been taken on a twelve year winning streak by their manager, Chuck McArthur. In spite of this, Riggley refused to make Chuck co-owner of the Badgers. In retaliation, during the Badgers' thirteenth game, McArthur proceeded to sabotage the game as the Black Toad, during which he murdered the team's pitcher. Two of the on-lookers were Pvt. Steve Rogers and James Barnes, who investigated the murder as Captain America and Bucky. After the two heroes were willing to act as substitute players to expose the Black Toad, Riggley attempted to tell them of his suspicions about McArthur, only to be murdered by a poisoned dart. Nevertheless, Cap captured the Toad and unmasked him as McArthur, who committed suicide to escape punishment.[1]

Trivia

  • It is apparent that the Brooklyn Badgers were meant as analogues for the real-life baseball team, the Dodgers, then located in New York City as the Brooklyn Dodgers. Riggley himself may be named after William Wrigley, an early 20th century chewing gun magnate who had been the famed owner of the Chicago Cubs.
