A fighter pilot, Smitty and his wingman engaged the rogue War Machine when he flew into restricted airspace. A brief dogfight ended with Smitty's jet being shot down by War Machine. Ejecting, Smitty was threatened in midair by the armored mercenary, who otherwise allowed him to parachute to safety.[20]

Steve was a helicopter pilot who searched for the missing Betty Talbot. He managed to locate her on an island where a volcano was erupting and pulled her to safety, not knowing that in the bottom of his helicopter he was also carrying the Hulk.[21]
