Synopsis for "The Black Kitchen: Part 1"
Matt Murdock sits in a prison cafeteria, wearing his original yellow Daredevil mask and thinking to himself that life is a long series of stories, and that if a person isn't living them they're consuming them through literature and media; but that in prison those stories feel like they're on-hold. Thinking to himself that he can't let his fellow inmates know he's blind lawyer Matt Murdock, and - ignoring their pointed stares - sits and listens to the stories of his fellow prisoners. A burly black man with a bushy beard, Marcus, derails Daredevil's train of thought by calling him out on staring silently and informing Daredevil that the other inmates think he's creepier than the serial killer in Block D. Daredevil asks what he should be doing instead, and Marcus replies that it doesn't matter, noting that a lot of the inmates want to kill Daredevil for putting them behind bars. Marcus scoffs that Daredevil is just another white guy in a mask, and that at least Luke Cage had the decency to show his face when he busted Marcus and his friends. Daredevil decides to return to his cell, Marcus mockingly asking if he made the Devil of Hell's Kitchen uncomfortable and sneering that he'll be out of prison sooner than later. Pausing, Daredevil states that his sentence is two years and that he'll serve it just like Marcus is serving his, but Marcus laughs and retorts that the fact the guards let Daredevil keep his mask means they approve of his vigilantism. Marcus bitterly states he was busted for cocaine possession and doesn't have the luxury of taking off a mask and starting fresh when he gets out in three years. Getting up in Daredevil's face, Marcus scoffs that him serving his full sentence is a joke, but a pair of guards tell him to back off and save his speeches until after the prison warden gives Daredevil his.
In his office, Warden Hollis apologizes to Daredevil for not meeting him sooner, Daredevil replying that he doesn't expect special treatment. Warden Hollis comments that Daredevil got his son, Mason Hollis, arrested during one of his psychotic episodes as the supervillain Crime-Wave. Before Daredevil can apologize, Warden Hollis states that his son is doing well and that he doesn't harbor any ill will towards Daredevil for doing what had to be done: bringing a dangerous person who was hurting people to justice. Smiling grimly, Warden Hollis says that Daredevil himself fits that description, Daredevil thinking to himself that Marcus is wrong and that the only way he's getting out of prison early is in a body bag.
Standing atop a building, Elektra Natchios - who has taken over the mantle of Daredevil while Murdock is in prison - dangles a gunrunner off the edge of the roof and threatens to kill him... thinking to herself that while the old Elektra wouldn't have hesitated to do so she promised Murdock she'd operate by his creed. The arms-dealer stammers that he won't sell his wares again, Elektra tossing him to safety and telling him she couldn't care less where he sells his weapons so long as it isn't in Hell's Kitchen. Threatening to kill him if she sees him again, she leaps off the roof wondering what Murdock hopes to accomplish by turning them over to the police, thereby perpetuating a cycle of violence and corruption, when he could end the threat criminals pose by simply killing them. As she laments Murdock not understanding what she hopes to accomplish and that they could save the world together, a roar rings out over city as a symbiote dragon soars overhead.
In the mayoral office of New York City, Wilson Fisk is congratulated by a representative of the Foundation, who is chased off by his bodyguard Mary Walker when he comments on the new Daredevil. Telling Mary to back down, Fisk assures her that he can handle himself and that his life isn't in any danger from either wearer of the devil mask. One of his aides, Wesley, approaches and tells Fisk they need to evacuate: the Class E situation they were warned about has begun. As Wesley chastises Mary for not wearing her earpiece or reading the briefing documents he sent out, Fisk irately interrupts and asks exactly what they're dealing with. Wesley states an alien invasion is happening just as the symbiote dragon flies overhead, raining down offshoot Symbiotes that take over civilians and turn them into monsters. As the horde of symbiote-augments charge Fisk's guards, Mary draws her swords and leaps into the fray, telling Wesley to get their boss to safety. Climbing into his limo, Fisk refuses to leave without Mary, but as his aides are taken over by symbiotes Wesley reminds him that the city needs its mayor in one piece. As Fisk's limo speeds away, Mary is engulfed by a symbiote, hacking at it with her swords even as it takes her over.
In his cell, Murdock thinks to himself that the nights are the worst - he'd spent years soundproofing his home so that he could sleep properly, but in prison every little noise jolts him awake. Overhearing a conversation between two people seeking refuge from the symbiotes, Murdock pulls on his mask and calls out to the guards - sensing symbiotes oozing into the prison through the windows. The symbiotes take over several of the guards and inmates and begin rampaging, Murdock recognizing their scent as being similar to Venom's but even more foul. As several guards run past, pursued by a symbiote-augment, Murdock calls out to them to let him out so he can help fight.
At a pub, a woman angrily accosts her sixteen-year-old daughter, Alice, who has been drinking and flirting with a much older man. The man irritably tells the woman to go away and let them have a good time, only to balk at learning the girl's age - the bartender remarking that he must've misread Alice's ID. As Alice angrily tells the woman to leave her alone, the woman snaps that she is Alice's mother. Slapping her, Alice shouts that the woman isn't her mother and runs off, snapping that the woman doesn't really care about her and is only using Alice to make herself look better to her clients. Their argument is interrupted as they find themselves surrounded by symbiotes, one of which promptly engulfs Alice's mother. As Alice fearfully asks if her mother can hear her, Alice's mother turns - sporting a red spiral on her forehead and a cheek-less fanged maw, and tells her daughter to join her. Alice flees in terror as the people around her are engulfed by symbiotes, her mother pursuing her. Coiling tendrils around Alice, the woman croons that the girl is her daughter and soon they will be a family together - two mothers and two daughters - until the end of time. Punching the woman away, Elektra asks if Alice can run and helps her to her feet, telling her to hide among the garbage in case the monsters track by scent. Thinking to herself that she hates New York City, Elektra resolves to save as many people as she can and rams Alice's mother with a hotwired car.
In the prison, Daredevil calls out to Officer Baker to let him out as one of the symbiote-augments mockingly asks if anyone else dares defy their dark god. Grabbing a fallen guard's baton and vaulting over the railing to the floor below, Daredevil thinks to himself that he's in over his head.
Escorting Alice through the streets, Elektra snaps at her to move and thinks to herself that the girl is weak and only slowing her down. Falling to her knees, Alice sobs that she can't, her symbiote possessed mother approaching and saying that everything will be fine when they're both servants of Knull. Elektra bitterly thinks that much as she wants to leave the girl to her fate in order to hunt down the source of the symbiotes, Murdock would never approve of it. Shoving Alice back and drawing her sai, Elektra faces off against Alice's mother only for the symbiote-possessed Typhoid Mary to join the fray, laughing maniacally as she says she wants a word with the new Daredevil.
Barely evading the two symbiote-augments he's fighting, Daredevil thinks to himself that even while in prison he's compelled to fight to protect God's creatures from the godless fiends who seek to bring them harm. Caught off-guard, he's engulfed by a symbiote and the voice of the dark god Knull speaks through it - admonishing Daredevil that his children are far from godless. Introducing himself, Knull explains that he is bonding one of his children to Daredevil, asking if Daredevil doesn't want to improve and become better. As the symbiote bonds to him and takes him over, Daredevil replies that he tries every day to become better, and Knull assures him that with his limitless power the Man Without Fear will be truly unstoppable.
