Solicit Synopsis
NEVER DIE. NEVER WIN. ETERNALS.
What’s the point of an eternal battle?
For millions of years, one hundred Eternals have roamed the Earth, secret protectors of humanity. Without them, we’d be smears between the teeth of the demon-like Deviants. Their war has waged for all time, echoing in our myths and nightmares. But today, Eternals face something new: change. Can they – or anyone on Earth – survive their discovery?
From the thought provoking minds of Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, Uncanny X-Men, Thor) and Esad Ribić (Secret Wars, King Thor) comes a new vision of the classic Marvel mythology!Notes
- Two trailers were released by Marvel on YouTube to promote this series:
- With the first issue of this series, all the Eternals are retconned to being the same age, as they've all been created 1 million years ago. This means the various "generations of Eternals" are simply large waves of reboots that affected the Eternals' population. The previously mentioned familial relationships are static family relationships, since the Eternals of Earth have never procreated between them.[1] This raises some questions, namely, why Sersi was seen as a child in Captain America Annual #11.
- This issue also marks the first mention (and appearance) of Eternals switching gender, with Sprite becoming a girl after having been a boy for millennia.
- Furthermore, Olympia is once again stated to be in Greece, after having systematically been portrayed in Antarctica since Eternals (Vol. 3) #4. Instead, the Exclusion is introduced, this one indeed situated in Antarctica.
- On the other hand, Titanos is stated to be in North America, despite Kronos's profile on Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z Update #2 stating it was in Asia.
- A central element of this series is the introduction of the idea that the Celestials made 100 Eternals and, since they can't breed with each other, there have only ever been a hundred of them. Writer Kieron Gillen has revealed he created a list of every Eternal he could find, which was about 50-60, then he made the others to bring their number up to the 100.[1] However, pages 4 and 5 of this issue actually list the names of 101 Eternals.
- According to what the Machine narrates in A.X.E.: Eve of Judgment #1, the fact that there are 101 Eternals listed is accurate even though its statement that the Celestials had made 100 Eternals is also correct.
- A.X.E.: Death to the Mutants #2 confirms that the 101st Eternal is Starfox/Eros, who was indeed created long after the other 100.
- According to Kieron Gillen, certain Eternals have been renamed, with Vampiro specifically mentioned as one listed under an unfamiliar name. It can be assumed the same is true for other unlisted Eternals such as Pixie and William Carmody, the Eternal Brain.
- According to what the Machine narrates in A.X.E.: Eve of Judgment #1, the fact that there are 101 Eternals listed is accurate even though its statement that the Celestials had made 100 Eternals is also correct.
