The Marvel Augmented Reality App was a mobile application developed by Marvel in conjunction with the AR technology company Aurasma. It allowed users to scan specific Marvel comics to unlock exclusive content such as videos, commentaries, phone backgrounds and more. The app was shut down and removed from all app stores some time in 2015.
History[]
The Marvel AR App was announced at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival on March 11, 2012, making it the first augmented reality app released by a comic book company.[1] The app was released for download on the Google Play and iOS App Store two months later on April 2. The first comic that was compatible with the app was Avengers vs. X-Men #1. Marvel Digital Media Group general manager Peter Phillips said "Avengers VS X-Men is the biggest story we've ever told and teaming with Aurasma allows us to bring our fans a deeper experience when they purchase select Marvel comics and other Marvel products".[2]
When Marvel enacted their 2012 publishing initiative, Marvel NOW!, they coupled almost every one of their new series with bonus content in the AR app. Some of these series only had app content for the first few issues while others continued to be given content for their full runs. In the first two years, 1500 in-app unlockables were produced for different comics.[3]
On April 23, 2014, the app was given a major update, including faster load times for videos, and new types of content to unlock (such as the "Marvel Science" videos).[4][3]
Function[]
Opening the Marvel AR app played the logo clip used before the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, before changing to a camera screen. Pointing the camera screen at any Marvel comic page that had the Marvel AR symbol on it would unlock some sort of bonus content on the app screen superimposed over the camera. Some comics would play a video over the location on the screen where the page was, making the page appear to "come to life". Others just turned the full app screen into a video player, or simply showed a static image.
Left alone, the videos would play on loop until the user tapped their screen to return to the camera. Many of the "recap" videos and character biographies were produced by Judy Stephens with the panel compilations being outsourced to Captured Planet Studios.
