History
Windhölme was a frontier world located just inside the rim, about a thousand parsecs out from Imperial Center. It had been charted and settled by members of the sea-faring Scania race who had come there are refugees from their previous home on Jaeger IV. The Scania had no interest in imperial politics and just wanted the empire to leave them alone.
The planet's dominant native lifeform was a species of intelligent aquatic predators known as the Kraken. The Scania began to hunt the Kraken who hunted them in return.
Three hundred years after the Scania arrived, Windhölme was attacked by a group of well-trained mercenaries. Armed with advanced weapons, it took less than a day for the slavers to wipe out most of the eight million Scania, killing everyone over the age of seventeen and everyone who resisted. The few thousand surviving children were herded aboard the slaver starship which then left the planet. However, before the starship could leave orbit, it was attacked and badly damaged by Star-Lord and "Ship". The slavers quickly decided to auto-destruct their starship while they escaped in lifeboats but were intercepted and killed by slaves who had been freed during Star-Lord's attack.
With their homeworlds having been rendered incapable of supporting life by the slavers, almost all of the freed slaves joined the Scania survivors in returning to Windhölme.[1]
