History

Floyd Donahue was one of the Skrulls from the planet Kral IV, a colony whose residents had patterned their culture after that of the "Gangster Era" of the United States of America during the 1920s and 1930s. Like the other Kralian Skrulls, Donahue used his shape-shifting powers to constantly maintain his chosen human form.[1]

Donahue was the "boss" of Big Casino, an interstellar spacecraft that had been constructed to resemble a massive zeppelin. This Skrull starship was a mobile casino and its interior had been designed to look like an American casino from the 1930s.

Aside from running the casino, Donahue would also engage in criminal activity, for a price. After having been broken out of the prison planet Klarr by the warlord Raksor, Prince Dezan paid Donahue "plenty" to transport the two of them to the Imperial Power Asteroid in an attempt to prevent the use of an ultimate weapon. Along the way, Donahue and his crew encountered a team of Earth's Avengers who, for reasons of their own, were also traveling to the Power Asteroid. After learning this fact, Donahue decided to introduce them to Big Casino's special customer, Prince Dezan. After hearing Dezan's story, the Avengers decided to assist the prince by gaining entry to the power station and ending whatever threat it posed. When considering how they could get close to the power asteroid, the Wasp asked Donahue if he could provide them with a proper excuse to pay a visit. Donahu agreed and asked the Avengers to help get the Inhibitor Mask off Dezan's head.

An hour later, as the Avengers and Dezan undertook their infiltration of the Power Asteroid, Donahue and Big Casino remained in close proximity, even though doing so could have had fatal consequences if their deception had been uncovered. Unfortunately, even the combined efforts of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, who had coincidentally also traveled there to stop the use of the weapon, were unable to prevent the detonation of the Hyperwave Bomb. As a result, Donahue and the staff and clientele of Big Casino were among the billions of Skrulls who found themselves locked in whatever forms they were in when the bomb went off.[1]

Several years later, while Big Casino was in orbit around another planet, one of its patrols spotted the Silver Surfer. Its crew panicked and opened fire on the ex-Herald of Galactus who evaded their fire and damaged one of its wings, causing the craft to flee back to Big Casino. His curiosity piqued by the sight of a spacecraft that so closely resembled a Terran zeppelin, the Silver Surfer entered through the hangar bay and confronted the pilots, demanding to know who they were and why they had attacked him. Before things could escalate, Donahue entered, apologized for the fact that the "flyboys" had shot at him, introduced himself and welcomed the Surfer to Big Casino. As the two of them talked, the Surfer revealed that he had detected that Donahue was a Skrull and asked what type of establishment Big Casino really was. A bit offended by the implication that he had an ulterior motive, Donahue replied that at least they Kralian Skrulls were supposed to be there. Their conversation was cut short when the Surfer notice a particular configuration of stars and realized what the date was. Now smiling, the Surfer quickly said goodbye, shook Donahue's hand and accepted his apology about the attack before passing through a window and leaving the spacecraft. Watching him depart, Donahue was relieved to see him go and thought to himself that if there was one thing that was creepier than the Silver Surfer, it was a smiling Silver Surfer.[2]

Attributes

Powers

  • Skrull Shape-Shifting: Like most other Skrulls, Donahue was a shape-shifter. He could mentally cause the unstable molecules that comprised his body to become pliant, enabling him to assume other forms through muscular expansion and contraction. Once a new shape had been assumed, it took a conscious act of will to assume another form or revert to natural, so he did not spontaneously lose his assumed form when asleep or unconscious. Skrulls in altered form will, however, revert to their original forms at the moment of death.

Weaknesses

  • Skrull Shape-Shifting: Skrulls only take on the appearance of an object or person and none of that object or person’s characteristics. There is a limit to the size of the object or person a Skrull can imitate. The average Skrull cannot distend their mass any more than 1.5 times as large a volume as their original volume, nor can they contract their mass any more than 0.75 a volume as their original volume.

Notes

  • The fact that Floyd Donahue bears a remarkable resemblance to actor Humphrey Bogart in his role as "Rick Blaine" in the 1942 film Casablanca is almost certainly not a coincidence, given that it has been established that movies from Earth were among the inspirations for Kral IV's culture.[3]
