The Forest of a Thousand Sorrows lies at the north part of the isle of Avalon, either northwest to Fairyland,[5] or containing Fairyland.[6] Though seen as a luxuriant forest,[1] it was known and also seen as a macabre place of dead trees and eons of agony permeating the air, a place with an unquenchable appetite for sorrow.[3] The Falls in the Forest are guarded by Sir Benedict of the Falls and lead to the Shrine of James Braddock Sr.[7] The Lords of the Thousand Sorrows, led by the Ogre Mage Krokwel, also dwell in the Forest.[3]

History

Early years[]

Sir Benedict of the Falls was tasked by King Arthur to be the guardian of Excalibur. He resided in the Forest of a Thousand Sorrows of Otherworld, where he slew thousands who wished to claim the sword, waiting for the rightful monarch of Otherworld.[1]

Krokwel, an Ogre mage[4] and member of the Corps, but was ejected from the Corps by James Braddock and Merlyn due to his magics ingestion, and banished to the Forest of Sorrows to which he was bound[3] for eternity.[4] He became the master of the ancient Lords of the Thousand Sorrows (though those ancient knights allegedly recognized only the sorrow of the forest as their masters). He resided in his pyramid.[3]

When Captain Britain came to the Forest to seek Excalibur, he dueled with Sir Benedict and bested him with Strider. Braddock had Benedict at his mercy, but refused to deliver the killing blow, and Benedict recognized in his humility the king of Otherworld. Free of his duty, he pledge himself to Braddock.[1] Sentenced to be erased from reality by the Captain Britain Corps, Fantomex was rescued by Psylocke, who brought him to the Forest of Sorrows, and asked Krokwel to heal him. Krokwel first intended to let Fantomex disappear and Psylocke's sorrow to feed the children in the woods, but then offered her a deal:[4] her sorrow and her capacity to ever feel any of it again.[8] Once the deed done, Krokwel provided Psylocke and Fantomex a transport, a "mummified dragon", for them to reach the Northern Portal to Earth.[9]
