The Frankish Empire or Kingdom of the Franks was the largest post-Roman barbarian kingdom in Western Europe. It was ruled by the Franks during Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages.
It would eventually split and evolve into the modern European nations of France,[1][2] Germany,[3] Switzerland,[citation needed] Austria,[citation needed] Belgium,[1] the Netherlands,[citation needed] and Luxembourg.[citation needed]
History
Origin[]
The Roman historian; Tacitus told the tales at the beginning of the Christian era, the region of central Europe was inhabited by the bloodthirsty Franks. They was a tribe of men who worshipped Wode. Any warrior slain in their tribe tribes fierce sacrificial joust was chosen to accompany a God on their demented Skyride known as The Wild Hunt.[4]
Circa the 2nd century AD, the Franks (along with other Germanic tribes such as the Saxons, Teutons, Suevi, Cherusci, Swabians, Goths, Alamani and Bavarians migrated into the area of northern Europe previously held by the Celts, and clashed with the Roman Empire, attacking them and repelling their advance east of the Rhine.[3]
4th century[]
During the 4th century AD, the Romans employed Franks as mercenaries in Gallia Belgica took control of the region.[1] As Rome declined, the Germanic tribes started to whittle away at its territory.[3] The Franks established the Merovingian kingdom, named after their leader Merovech.[1]
5th century[]
After the fall of the Roman Empire, those same Franks went on to conquer the land south of the Rhine and make it under their name, by the mountainous "Rock of the Franks", which is the meaning of the word "Frankenstein" waited silently, is first of all blurred, Not yet sated. Castle Frankenstein would one day be built on that site cursing their line for centuries to come. [4]
In late 5th century, Frankish king Clovis I had conquered much of the Gaul.[2]
8th Century[]
A few centuries later, the Merovingians led way to the Carolingians (named after the later Charlemagne),[1] with the Carolingian Empire growing from Clovis' kingdom.[2]
Under Charlemagne, the Franks conquered much of the western Europe,[3] and his empire came to encompass almost all of Europe.[1]
9th Century[]
At Charlemagne's death,[1] around 840 A.D.,[2][3] or in 843 AD,[1] the Empire was split between three of his grandsons:[2][1]
- Middle Francia was ruled by Lothair I, and encompassed much of what would become Belgium.[1]
- East Francia', the east of the Empire, became ruled by Louis the German, and would become the Kingdom of Germany in the next couple of centuries.[3]
- West Francia was ruled by Charles the Bald, and which became France in 987.[2]
