History

After narrowly escaping death, Moondark enslaved the performers of a carnival by stealing their souls and storing them in his powerful soul orb. They served the sorcerer until Spider-Man recognized Ghost Rider among them. Moondark used his slaves to battle Parker, but the latter managed to free Blaze, who helped him free the other souls and defeat Moondark.

After being liberated, Six, Muck Monster, and Gorilla Girl struck out on their own. The three friends hoped to put their past bondage behind them and seek new futures. As they were crossing a moonlit country road, a speeding car swerved to avoid them and crashed. The gorilla blamed the accident on their "grotesque" appearances, and insisted that they rescue the motorist. The trio used their abilities to pull the driver, a frantic Dr. Melloncamp, from the burning vehicle, only to realize that it wasn't them that had frightened her.[1][2]

A moment later, Hammer and Anvil arrived and bowled the Freaks over. They explained that Dr. Melloncamp was too valuable to be let go and that they intended to keep her as a prisoner. Seeing the doctor's plight, Six ignored his friends' protests and leapt at the two criminals, only to be tossed aside. Gorilla Girl knew that even the combined strength of Muck Monster and her muscular ape body was no match for the criminal duo's, but luckily, the shapeshifter had another way of dealing with men.

As Hammer was laughing at Six, he heard a woman's voice call him from behind. He turned and his jaw dropped; standing in the moonlight was a tall, beautiful, shapely, dark-skinned, woman, wearing nothing but a coy smile. As he was taking in the sight, Muck Monster swatted Anvil to the ground with a tree trunk. When Hammer's eyes turned back to his partner, the alluring creature he'd been ogling shifted back into her bestial form and punched him out with her hairy paw. Gorilla Girl joked that she had more than one way of "turning men's heads." The "Freaks"(a proposed name for their "superhero team") and the doctor departed, leaving the two thugs unconscious on the road.[2]

Powers and Attributes[]

  • Muck Monster - A strong, robust creature with a mossy, bracken body that makes him flame-resistant. He is most likely the strongest of the three, as he is seen uprooting a tree and swinging it as a club. He tends to show little concern for the "normal" people who used to stare at him, but is very protective of his friends and fellow "freaks".
  • Six - An unusual man with six-arms. He has impressive dexterity with all six and can use them simultaneously. He is also very agile. Since being rescued by Spiderman, Six has attained a strong sense of duty and is eager to help others in distress, even at the risk of his own life.
  • Gorilla Girl/Woman - A female shapeshifter who may appear in the form of a powerful gorilla or as a beautiful woman. She seems to prefer spending most of her time as an ape, but may use either of her two bodies to her advantage. She does feel compelled to help others, but is especially loyal to her two friends.

Trivia

  • The "Freaks" only appeared as a team in Marvel Tales issue 256.
  • This is the first and last appearance of Six and Muck Monster.
  • A character called Gorilla Girl would appear in later issues. However, the incarnation seen with the Freaks appears in human form as an attractive woman in her prime, rather than the teenage girl depicted later.
