Fritz Sablinov was the twin brother of the legendary Symkarian Nazi hunter Ernst Sablinov, who founded the Wild Pack to hunt Nazi war criminals. Fritz co-led the Pack and faked his own disappearance, leaving behind his daughter Anna, to pose as Ernst in some situations. Although Fritz considered himself a better strategist than Ernst, he was jealous that his brother was the leader of the Pack.

When Ernst was apparently murdered by ex-Nazi and Hydra agent Ivan Trefkov, Fritz impersonated Ernst and allowed himself to be captured to attract Trefkov's attention. Under torture, Fritz convinced Trefkov to create a faction called Genesis Coalition to steal assets from Hydra and, when the time came, secede and compete against Hydra to destroy it in a convoluted plan. Fritz, now a co-leader of the Coalition, discovered that Ernst was still alive, used as a living computer. Throughout his many years undercover, however, Fritz lost his sanity, and his plans to supposedly destroy Hydra and the Coalition involved provoking massacres of innocents, even though Fritz's voice was the most moderate and conciliatory among the leaders of the Coalition.

Eventually, the Coalition attracted the attention of Silver Sable, new leader of the Wild Pack and Fritz's niece. Fritz attempted to convince her to distance herself from the Coalition and, when this failed, to not interfere with his plans. Sable pretended to collaborate with Fritz in his plan, but she escaped and killed Trefkov during a critical operation in Bosnia. Enraged, Fritz attempted to kill Silver using advanced combat armor, but was in turn killed by Sable's on-off ally, the Foreigner. Ernst, who had realized that his brother was a lost cause, was rescued, and the Coalition was destroyed, but Hydra survived.

History

Fritz Sablinov was the twin[4] brother of Ernst Sablinov,[1] a Nazi hunter from Symkaria[4] who formed a military unit[4] to hunt Nazi war criminals[9][10] commanded by himself[9] after 1959.[4] Ernst married Anastasia and had a daughter, Silvija; meanwhile, Fritz also had a daughter, Anna Sablinova, who was younger than Silvija.[5] As Fritz and Ernst were indistinguishable even to their families, they shared command of the Wild Pack, with Fritz replacing Ernst in a number of public situations:[2] Sometimes, when Ernst went undercover in missions, Fritz pretended to be Ernst in front of the Wild Pack.[4] While Ernst was an excellent fighter, Fritz was a better tactician and strategist, often preparing the missions for the Wild Pack,[1] and both were known to participate in the management of the Wild Pack, as Fritz's existence and work were not a secret.[2] Although Fritz carried out his job efficiently, Fritz was jealous of Ernst because Ernst, not Fritz, was leading the Pack, and Ernst knew it.[1]

Soon after the creation of the Wild Pack, Anastasia was killed by Nazi war criminal Ivan Trefkov,[4][10][9] who became Ernst's personal nemesis.[9] Shortly after, Ernst began training his daughter Silvija to join the Pack.[4][5][9] Sometimes, Fritz would train her while Ernst participated in missions.[1][4] Silvija joined the Wild Pack,[5] and became second-in-command to Ernst,[2] or so she believed since she did not know of her father's close collaboration with Fritz. In the following years, Fritz mysteriously disappeared, apparently to devote himself exclusively to being Ernst's double.[1] Ernst had at least two heart attacks, and both Silvija and Anastasia's brother, Morty, urged Ernst to leave active command of the Wild Pack; Morty advised Ernst to adopt Fritz's personality traits, but Ernst insisted that they should not even think about Fritz.[2]

When Trefkov reappeared[2] working for the neo-Nazi criminal organization Hydra,[5] Ernst and Silvija wanted to take the opportunity to avenge Anastasia;[2][5] Ernst also wanted to destroy Hydra.[6] In the operation, however, Trefkov stabbed Ernst,[11][2] apparently killing him,[11][5][2][4][9] and escaped[2][5] with Ernst's body.[2][7][12] Really, Trefkov had kidnapped Ernst and kept him alive to use him as a living battle computer,[1][4] connecting him to advanced Hydra technology[1] to take advantage of Ernst's tactical genius;[1][5] Ernst tried to sabotage this effort by focusing his mind for years on gambits that he knew were destined to fail.[12]

As Fritz was missing at that time, Silvija became the sole legal guardian of Fritz's daughter Anna. Anna was immediately sent to a boarding school[5] in Long Island.[11] Fritz discreetly attended his brother's funeral, but established a plan based on the fact that Ernst's body had not been found[1] and was apparently in Trefkov's hands.[12] Fritz posed as Ernst to attack a Hydra outpost, attempting to attract Trefkov's attention to find out what exactly had happened. Fritz expected to be captured by Hydra during the attack, and so he was; but when his captors saw that he was apparently Ernst, they brought him before Trefkov, again following Fritz's plan. For months, Trefkov had Fritz tortured, without revealing where Ernst's body was. In his ordeal, Fritz developed an extreme plan to try to destroy Hydra, and presented it to Trefkov: The creation of a faction called Genesis Coalition that would steal assets from Hydra, waiting for the moment to destroy them and take their place,[1] when in reality Fritz's plan was to provoke a civil war[4] that would destroy both organizations.[1][4] Trefkov however was convinced by the plan and supported Fritz,[1] after which Trefkov personally convinced a former faction of Hydra to form the Genesis Coalition.[13] For years, Fritz remained deeply undercover in Hydra[5] and the Genesis Coalition.[10] Within Hydra and the Genesis Coalition, Fritz Sablinov's identity was known,[2] as he was believed to have deserted from the Wild Pack.[10] At a time when Hydra was especially weakened following the death of Strucker,[14][15] the Coalition took advantage to openly secede[16] before Strucker resurrected and reorganized Hydra, opposed by the Genesis Coalition.[14][15] Becoming a Hydra splinter group,[5][14][15] the Genesis Coalition was persecuted by Strucker, who branded them traitors.[16]

Fritz Sablinov and a large group from the Genesis Coalition, including Trefkov,[17] acquisition specialist[7] Dmitri Petrovich, and geneticist[17] Franz Lubischt,[6] established a secret base hidden behind a waterfall[6] in the lush rain forest of South America, with multiple low-level agents and scientists at their command. The Genesis Coalition captured humans and animals to subject them to[17] very painful experiments[17][6] in an attempt to create extraordinarily powerful hybrid super-soldiers, with support from international investors and advanced equipment stolen from Hydra.[17] Fritz was disgusted at Lubischt taking his subjects to the very verge of death, and tried to reduce their suffering. He also insisted the Coalition take some extra time in their plan, with the excuse of avoiding errors of past would-be conquerors; and mediated in heated arguments between other high-ranking Coalition members to reach compromises while excusing every party's position.[6]

Petrovich had attracted the attention of Silvija,[11] who had adopted the name "Silver Sable" since taking over the Wild Pack,[5] and she had sent the mercenary Paladin to track him down;[18] Paladin found Petrovich in South America with the Genesis Coalition, and reported to Sable,[17][5] who traveled there with the Wild Pack to stop them; the purpose of the operation was to stop Lubischt 's experiments,[6] since Silver Sable did not know that Trefkov[13][5] or Fritz were with the Genesis Coalition.[1] The Wild Pack infiltrated the base, but set off alarms; Fritz and Trefkov reproached Petrovich for his security system having allowed an intruder to get so far. Petrovich assured them that he would eliminate the intruders quickly, even after discovering that they were Silver Sable and the Wild Pack; Fritz thought highly of his niece's progress. Fritz and Trefkov left the base then, but Petrovich failed: Sable and the Wild Pack stopped the experiments, freed the test subjects, and killed Lubischt before destroying the base. They would have also killed Petrovich, but he managed to escape from her by confusing Sable[6] when he told her that her father was alive.[6][5][9]

When Silvija (then "Silver") attacked the Coalition, Fritz was proud of her.

The Genesis Coalition obtained stolen Hydra technology and weaponry with which Trefkov intended to attack several Eastern European countries with weaponry provided by smuggler Leviathan.[13] Petrovich also stole a mobile base from Hydra for the Genesis Coalition,[7] and they bought a shipment of Cyberwarriors, mindless weaponized cyborgs, from Harlan Ryker and his people,[8] to be used on an attack on Wundagore Mountain, in Transia,[7] which they intended to use as the Genesis Coalition headquarters from where they could expand their base.[12]

Meanwhile, Silver discovered that Trefkov was with the Genesis Coalition[13][5] and that they had purchased Cyberwarriors, and decided to focus her efforts on pursuing them.[8] Baron Strucker's Hydra also tracked down the Genesis Coalition,[7] hiring the mercenary group Next Wave to recover the stolen base.[7][19][20][5]

Silver Sable and Next Wave simultaneously attacked the Genesis Coalition base; Petrovich reacted by sealing off the affected areas and sending some of the Cyberwarriors there. Trefkov ordered to kill the intruders[7] while thirty Cyberwarriors were sent to attack Transia.[12] Fritz Sablinov suggested personally taking care of his niece Silver Sable, and Trefkov did not object, since he did not doubt his colleague's loyalty.[7] However, seeing that there was danger, Petrovich and Trefkov evacuated towards Transia in a mobile battlestation. Meanwhile, Fritz Sablinov donned a special combat armor and tried to keep Silver Sable at bay by warning them to not interfere, without revealing his identity; Silver Sable disregarded the warning. In Transia, however, the Cyberwarriors were defeated by the Knights of Wundagore, defenders of Wundagore, and the cyborg Siege, later helped by the Wild Pack. The Genesis Coalition left, but they lost all of the Cyberwarriors.[12] The Genesis Coalition settled in an old underground base abandoned by Hydra, and there they set up a plan to cause a war in Bosnia and blame it on Hydra[3] by sending Genesis Coalition agents disguised as Hydra agents to attack the U.S. military. Fritz Sablinov had developed this plan, expecting the world,[1] including law enforcement agency SHIELD,[1] to retaliate against Hydra and end that organization, while Hydra would devote their assets to destroy the Genesis Coalition. This strategy would provoke a large-scale war with many collateral casualties. Petrovich[1] and Trefkov both believed that the Genesis Coalition was strong enough to survive and would end up in a privileged position to obtain the spoils of Hydra. However, Trefkov wanted to get rid of any possible impedance during this operation, including Silver Sable and also Petrovich, whose previous blunders had costed much to the Genesis Coalition. Trefkov sent hitman Deadpool after Silver Sable,[3] although Fritz convinced him to[1] order Deadpool to capture her alive, claiming that if she died, her Wild Pack would seek revenge and they would have a bigger problem, while if they captured her, they could hold her hostage; Trefkov begrudgingly accepted. Simultaneously, Trefkov had Petrovich arrested at the base, sending him to a cell until they could decide whether it was better to execute him, or hand him over to Strucker as a bargaining chip.[3]

Deadpool failed to defeat Silver Sable, and revealed to her that the Genesis Coalition had hired him.[3] Additionally, Petrovich escaped thanks to several Genesis Coalition agents being on his side.[21] Petrovich attacked Silver Sable in Symkaria[21][5][10] in a daring plan doomed to failure; Petrovich planned it so that she would defeat him and then he pretended to be intimidated and agreed to take Sable and her Wild Pack to the Genesis Coalition's secret base where her father was. Petrovich hoped that Sable would kill Trefkov for having attacked and kidnapped Ernst Sablinov; and then Petrovich's followers would kill Sable and his Wild Pack, so that Petrovich could take over the Genesis Coalition. At the Genesis Coalition base, Sable divided the Wild Pack in pairs to explore, with her and superpowered Battlestar taking Petrovich as a prisoner.[21]

In his final gambit, Fritz murdered Petrovich lest Petrovich'd reveal unconvenient truths to Silvija.

Once there, Fritz appeared in front of them, easily defeating Battlestar and grabbing Petrovich as his own prisoner. He then reminded Silver Sable of his previous warning and revealed his face; Silver initially took him for Ernst,[21] but he immediately told her he was Fritz. He explained how he went undercover in Hydra and the Coalition,[1] becoming one of its leaders.[1][5] The arrival of a platoon of Genesis Coalition soldiers supporting Petrovich, allowed Petrovich to try and escape their captors' grasp; Petrovich intended to use this new information on Fritz's betrayal in his attempt to gain support in the Coalition. However, Battlestar, Fritz and Sable easily defeated the soldiers.[1] Fritz then assassinated Petrovich[1][5] before the latter could insist that Ernst was alive and at the base. Implying that the confusion was due to his own resemblance to Ernst, Fritz falsely told Silver Sable that Trefkov had killed Ernst, and told him that his plan to attack Bosnia was vital to destroying Hydra and the Genesis Coalition; and then he convinced Silver to allow herself to be captured, with the Wild Pack, so that Fritz would take them to Trefkov so he could protect them. Silver was suspicious, but accepted, keeping two secrets: That his enemy and occasional ally the Foreigner was infiltrating the Genesis Coalition base in order to free her, and that a second group of Wild Pack, the Intruders, would go to Bosnia to stop the conflict. This intrusion was unforeseen by Fritz, and would spoil all of his strategy, as the Intruders cooperated with the military and Hydra to keep the Coalition at bay.[1]

Sable and the Wild Pack were locked[1][5] on a submarine that Trefkov was using as a base in the Black Sea for the military operation. Trefkov agreed to keep them alive as hostages provisionally and kill them later.[1] By then, Trefkov's agents had already begun the attack on Bosnia,[21] although SHIELD had noted that their tactics were too mediocre to be obeying Strucker. Strucker, for his part, saw the attack not only as a ploy, but also as an insult, and decided to go to Bosnia to combat the Genesis Coalition forces, all following Fritz and Trefkov's plan. Trefkov personally traveled to Bosnia aboard a battlecruiser stolen from Hydra to maintain the deception, aiming to use it to kill Strucker; but his attack failed, and he was discovered. Fritz realized the problem and, teleporting to the cruiser, contacted Trefkov to have Trefkov activate the cloaking of the cruiser before Strucker destroyed it.[1]

Meanwhile, in the submarine, the Foreigner rescued Sable and the Wild Pack,[1][5] and took them to Ernst.[1] Sable rescued her father,[1][4][9][5] who asked Silver to stop mad Fritz,[1] and she quickly developed a plan: They stole one of Trefkov's minisubmarine to reach Trefkov's battlecruiser without being detected. Once on board, while the Wild Pack dealt with the defenses, Sable arrived at the command room[1] and killed Trefkov.[1][9][5]

Fritz Sablinov immediately realized that Trefkov had stopped responding, and teleported to the cruiser's command room, where he confronted Sable, also accusing her of having ruined his plan with the Intruders' intervention in Bosnia. Both Fritz and Silver claimed that Ernst would have been ashamed of the other's actions, Silver arguing that Fritz had sacrificed his principles to an unacceptable degree. When Fritz admitted that he had wanted the command of the Pack, the Foreigner[1] shot Fritz Sablinov dead[1][10] from the back. Silver got enraged at the Foreigner for having killed her relative, as she had intended to apprehend and help him; and the Foreigner replied that Fritz was a bitter, resentful man who cared nothing for her - yet the Foreigner did not fight back or try to stop the attack. While Silver hated the Foreigner, especially after that, she agreed to let him go for his help.[1]

The day ended with the apparent destruction of the Genesis Coalition, although Strucker and Hydra escaped. Ernst recovered with his daughter in Symkaria, admitting that Fritz had used him as a battle computer, but Ernst had done his best to sabotage the process by giving the Genesis Coalition only gambits that would lead to defeat.[1]

Personality

Dmitri Petrovich (Earth-616), Fritz Sablinov (Earth-616), Genesis Coalition (Earth-616), Ivan Trefkov (Earth-616) from Silver Sable and the Wild Pack Vol 1 8 002

In the Genesis Coalition, he was the voice of reason mediating between Trefkov and Petrovich.

As a member of the Wild Pack, Fritz was dedicated to his job of pursuing war criminals, although he was always jealous of his beloved brother Ernst for his leadership of the unit. He was willing to make any personal sacrifice for his missions, including his family life. During the torture, he set up a plan to destroy Hydra in which he also sacrificed his principles. After years undercover in the Genesis Coalition, Fritz lost his mind and began developing insane plans, causing wars if he deemed necessary while torturing his own brother.[1] He attempted to hold on to what little was left of his humanity by having the Coalition torturing the subjects of their experiments as little as possible and stopping conflicts between the highest-level members, being the most level-headed person in the Coalition leadership.[6] However, when his niece scuttled his plans, Fritz was willing to kill her while blaming her for the disaster.[1]

Attributes

Powers

Abilities

Fritz Sablinov was an excellent tactician and strategist, thou not as good as geniuses like Baron Strucker. Fritz was also a magnificent fighter, proficient in various types of weapons. He also proved to be competent in training other people. Fritz was able to impersonate his brother Ernst in any circumstance, even fooling Ernst's daughter, Silvija, and proved capable of withstanding cruel physical torture for months.[1] Morty, Ernst's brother-in-law, believed that Fritz was less stubborn than Ernst.[2]

Weaknesses

Although Fritz Sablinov was supposedly a better strategist than his brother Ernst, he still used Ernst as a battle computer to provide strategies and was unable to detect that Ernst was giving him strategies doomed to failure.[1]

Paraphernalia

Equipment

Fritz Sablinov (Earth-616), Lemar Hoskins (Earth-616) from Silver Sable and the Wild Pack Vol 1 25 001

His armor (which clearly shows his moustache) had advanced weapons.

Fritz had combat armor that granted him superhuman abilities.[1] With the armor, he could teleport, with an unknown range.[12][21][1] The armor granted him super strength, enough to defeat the superhuman Battlestar, and a sonic attack,[21] as well as a plasma-based ranged attack shot from the gauntlets. With the armor, he could kill a human with a point-blank attack to the head. Additionally, he had radio communication with the rest of the Genesis Coalition The armor however gave him limited protection and did not save him from a single shot in the back from a personal weapon.[1]

This armor had tentacle-like green[1] slime on it.[12] The nature and use of this substance is unknown.

Notes

  • Slavic surnames have different endings for males and females. Sablinova is a female surname, so would be appropriate for e.g. Silver Sablinova, but the correct form of the name for a man would be Sablinov.
  • Since he is the twin brother of Silver Sable and has a relatively young daughter of his own, this creates some questions as the Sliding Timescale of Earth-616 makes it difficult for Fritz to have a daughter who is in her relative prime in the Modern Age. As yet, there are no official explanations available. However, due to Ernst's associations with Nick Fury and Sergei Kravinoff, two men who have found artificial means of slowing the aging processes, the idea that Ernst maintained vitality by a similar method is reasonably plausible, and as Fritz had impersonated Ernst with the latter's blessing, whatever Ernst used was probably shared with Fritz.
  • Silver Sable and the Wild Pack #25 says that Trefkov (written "Trefkoff") was the leader of the Genesis Coalition. Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #10 (Silver Sable's profile), while describing the same events, says that Fritz Sablinov was the leader of the Genesis Coalition.

Trivia

  • Fritz is known to have a daughter, Anna, and after Fritz's disappearance and Ernst's apparent death, Silvija was Anna's closest relative and tutor.[5] Anna's mother's identity is not revealed, and it is unclear whether Fritz was a widower, divorced her or even married her at any point.
    • Fritz disappeared for many years. He reappeared as a criminal and was killed, something known by Silver Sable, the Wild Pack and the Foreigner.[1] It is unclear whether any of them told Fritz's daughter Anna.
