History

The history of Galactus largely mirrors that of his Earth-616 counterpart.

Galactus was born Galan of Taa, the resident of a primordial universe predating the one where he would eventually be known as Galactus. Galan's universe was home to the Celestials, beings of immense power who had grown beyond physical forms. These creatures reproduced by impregnating planets with their essences, genetically manipulating the native lifeforms into protecting the embryo, which when hatched would destroy the planet where it had grown. The Celestials would eventually overpopulate their universe, leading to its end.

Before the death of Galan and his universe, he merged with a mysterious power which allowed him to be reborn into the next universe. This power was in fact the essence of Galactus himself, which had travelled back to the moment of its inception from the far future. Merging with this essence transformed Galan into Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds.[1] The Celestials had also survived the end of their universe, and in order to prevent them from destroying this universe as they had the last, Galactus began consuming the planets where they planted their embryos, ensuring a cosmic balance.

After millennia of his grim task, when about to consume the planet of Zenn-La, Galactus agreed to spare the world after one of its inhabitants Norrin Radd promised to help lead Galactus to other worlds in exchange for his own being spared. Galactus transformed Radd into his herald, the Silver Surfer. Galactus wanted a herald so that they might warn worlds of his coming, allowing as many as possible to survive.[2] The Surfer eventually led Galactus to Earth. This planet was watched over by Uatu the Watcher. In an effort to save the Celestial embryo, he gave Reed Richards the Ultimate Nullifier, using it to threaten Galactus into leaving.

Unaware of Galactus' role in maintaining cosmic balance, Richards eventually used his scientific knowledge to transform Galactus into a star. Reed believed he had spared the universe from a rampaging monster, but in fact he had left it more vulnerable than ever to the Celestials. In an effort to correct this mistake, the High Evolutionary, Silver Surfer and Adam Warlock convinced Reed's son Franklin Richards into allowing the High Evolutionary to use his equipment to transform him into a new world eater. Franklin assumed the mantle of Galactus, forgetting his true identity and believing himself to be the original Galactus.[3]

But the sentience of the real Galactus had in fact survived his transformation into a star. Galactus' sentience was transferred into a sword, which in the far future was found by Prince Wayfinder. Carrying the sword on a quest to Earth, Wayfinder found himself on the Earth of the distant past. The power of the sword created the Microverse, where Wayfinder and his followers would be safe, and transformed Wayfinder into the first carrier of the Enigma Force. After Wayfinder's death, the Enigma Force found a new host in one of his descendants, Arcturus Rann.[1]

When Rann himself eventually died, the Microverse would soon follow. The lion's share of the Enigma Force followed Rann into the Realm of the Dead, where it bonded with Kree hero Mar-Vell, the first step in Mar-Vell's quest to destroy Death. A small portion however threw itself back into the far distant past, to the previous universe, where it found the dying Galan, bonding with him to give birth to Galactus, and thus closing the time-loop of its existence.[1]
