Marvel Comics[]
Red Wolf and Western stories[]
For Marvel Comics, Gardner Fox first created the 19th century Red Wolf (the third Marvel character to use the moniker, and the second using this mantle as the agent of Owayodata), Johnny Wakely, in Marvel Spotlight #1 (November, 1971).
He was the major writer for this character's series, writing from Red Wolf #2 (July, 1972) to 8 (July, 1973), the first issue as well as the ninth and last issue being written by Roy Thomas. In "Echo From a Golden Grave!" (Red Wolf #7; May, 1973), he introduced yet another Red Wolf, Thomas Thunderhead.
He wrote "Rodeo Doom-Day!" in Gunhawk (Vol. 2) #7 (October, 1973), the last issue of the series.
Horror and Scifi stories and adaptions[]
Gardner Fox wrote/scripted multiple original and adapted stories of horror, science-fiction and sword and sorcery. Those includes:
- Tomb of Dracula #5 and 6 (November, 1972 and January, 1973).
- Doctor Strange's run in Marvel Premiere #5 (November, 1972) to 8 (May, 1973), in which were credited as featuring concepts created by Robert E. Howard, and included clear inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft's work and frpù the Cthulhu Mythos. #5 was also the first appearance on-panel of the Vishanti.
- In Chamber of Chills #2 (January, 1973), he adapted Robert E. Howard's "The Monster from the Mound!" (reprinted in Masters of Terror #1; May, 1975). He wrote "The Girl Who Cast No Shadow" in 3 (March, 1973), and "The Demon from Beyond!" in 4 (May, 1973).
- In Journey Into Mystery (Vol. 2) #4 (April, 1973), he co-wrote "The Man with -- Two Faces!" with Don McGregor.
- He co-wrote "The Monsters" (Doc Savage #5; June, 1973) with Steve Englehart, and wrote "Where Giants Walk!" (Doc Savage #6; August, 1973).
- In Vampire Tales #1 (June, 1973), he wrote "Revenge of the Unliving", and in 2 (October, 1973), he wrote "Five Claws of Tryphon".
- In Monsters Unleashed #1 (August, 1973), he co-wrote "World of Warlocks!" with Roy Thomas.
- In Creatures on the Loose #26 (November, 1973), he wrote "Tower of the Serpent-Women!", adapted from Lin Carter's sword and sorcery novel "Thongor and the Wizard of Lemuria". He wrote the original Thongor story "In the Crypts of Yamath!" in 27 (January, 1974).
- In Dracula Lives #4 (January, 1974), he wrote "This Blood is Mine!".
