History
Odin once told Thor when he was a boy, that the Gem was forged in the fire of a star, eons before, and it contains the essence of a multitude of suns. When Malekith attacked Asgard using the Cask of Ancient Winters, Thor used the Gem to counteract the icy abilities of the Cask to free Asgard.
