After Gunmetal lured Ghost Rider to Chicago and executed Smith, Johnny woke up in Sioux Falls, where he met a woman named Piston. He left her and continued fleeing from Gunmetal and Magnus. Johnny stopped by a convenience store, where Gunmetal held his shotgun to his head after finding Magnus dead before their target finally transformed into Ghost Rider.
