Gianni Franco ran one of the crime families in New York. At one point he attempted to eliminate rivals, but his men had booby-trapped the wrong car, a civilian vehicle which was owned by a NYPD policeman named Frank Castle. Julie Castle, Frank's wife, and his two children were discussing going to their grandmother's when Mrs. Castle used her husband's car, activating the bomb. Mr. Castle, who was nearby, frantically tried to rescue his wife and kids by smashing the window. However his efforts were in vain as they had already perished in the fire. Franco's mistake would have ramifications he could not imagine. However, these after effects would not be felt for years, as the Franco crime family continued to prosper to the point where he handed over control to his underboss and retired.
