Synopsis for "Something Sinister"
Outside Hub Studios, Orlando Octavius picks up a fallen poster for the Mary Janes advertising their triumphant return from their tour with the The Uncut Gems and frowns as he examines it, ignoring fleeing civilians shouting about a monster attack as he strides towards the door.
Inside the studio, Em Jay flies into a rage and transforms into Carnage, roaring at Ghost-Spider to stop swinging away and fight her. Telling Em Jay to calm down, Gwen Stacy laments that she was once a girl in a band with her friends, but that thanks to a spider-bite her simple life got exponentially more complicated. Narrowly dodging Carnage's telescopic tongue, Gwen leaps out of the way as Carnage furiously rebukes her, lamenting to herself that the sanguine symbiote's revitalization courtesy of Bruce Banner has only made Em Jay's already bad temper worse. As Carnage accuses Gwen of messing up her drum solo on purpose, Betty Brant suggests she was distracted by the sight of Em Jay's big long tongue, annoying Em Jay's ex-girlfriend Glory Grant. As Carnage and Ghost-Spider's brawl trashes the studio, a severed electrical cable lands near Betty and Glory, who kicks it away. Snaring the cable with a web-line, Ghost-Spider electrocutes the Carnage symbiote into submission and it withdraws into Em Jay's body. Lamenting that Em Jay going berserk at the drop of a hat has tanked the Mary Janes' success as a band, Gwen apologizes to the studio's owner for the damage, though he's ecstatic and asks if they can stage a repeat performance on the following day. Glory tries to comfort Em Jay, but Em Jay snaps at her to leave her alone. Mortified, Em Jay apologizes for the outburst and Glory assures her that she's not at fault. The studio head threatens to sue the Mary Janes if they refuse to work something out, but Gwen blows him off and brings Em Jay a water bottle. Sitting next to Em Jay, Gwen listens as her childhood friend bemoans that she ruined their live performance. Em Jay grimly states that the Carnage symbiote is getting harder to control, but Gwen's promise to help her figure it out is interrupted by Orlando, who introduces himself, son of the late Dr. Otto Octavius. Gwen's spider-sense goes off as Orlando approaches and reveals he was the one who financed Bruce Banners' gamma radiation research, claiming the Carnage symbiote--and thus Em Jay--as his property due to the gamma tech having revitalized it. As Glory and Betty return from getting water for Em Jay, Gwen angrily refuses to let Orlando take her best friend. Activating cybernetic tentacles he inherited from his father, Orlando states that he wasn't asking and attacks. Transforming into Ghost-Spider and shoving Em Jay out of the way, Gwen shouts for Glory and Betty to run. Ghost-Spider and Em Jay narrowly evade Orlando's tentacles, causing him to angrily snap at her to stop interfering with his investment. Em Jay doubles over as the Carnage symbiote snarls at her to unleash it, struggling to keep it under control; Gwen webbing Glory and Betty together and unceremoniously locking them in a supply closet, Betty indignantly commenting on the irony of Gwen tossing them into a closet. As Orlando takes advantage of the distraction to launch all four tentacles at Em Jay, Carnage takes over and electrocutes him with a broken power cable. Coming to to find his quarry escaped, Orlando calls one of his agents and tells them they're up.
Carrying Carnage, Ghost-Spider lands on an apartment roof and is shocked when Carnage shouts at her to get away, berating Gwen for stopping her from finishing Orlando off. Pulling out her smart phone, Gwen calls Natasha Romanoff, Carnage furiously punching a brick wall in frustration at being told to trust her. Natasha--in the middle of interrogating some mobsters--expresses annoyance at being interrupted but is intrigued to hear that Orlando Octavius is after Em Jay and the Carnage symbiote. Livid at being shushed, Carnage pounces at Ghost-Spider--getting a face full of webbing for her trouble. Natasha muses that she thought they'd have more time, informing Gwen that she anticipated this would happen sooner or later, and that Orlando is Otto Octavius' adopted son--implicating him in his adopted father's mysterious and unexplained death. Carnage cocoons Ghost-Spider in tendrils and takes her phone, threatening to hunt Natasha down and kill her. Natasha offers to help Carnage and Em Jay, who listens before returning Gwen's phone to her. Natasha offers to protect Em Jay from Orlando, though she says they'll need to hurry as time is of the essence. In a nearby highrise, Mortis--Dazzler's estranged super-villain sister--reports in to Orlando that she's spotted Carnage and Ghost-Spider. Orlando orders her to capture them both alive, Mortis agreeing as long as she gets to play with them first.
Carnage releases Ghost-Spider, who is confused at the bloodthirsty symbiote suddenly playing nice, but Carnage tells her to shut up and hurry since the rendezvous is a good mile away. In the alley below, Carnage snaps at Gwen to stop following her and that they're through. More confused than ever, Gwen snares Carnage's leg with a web-line as she tries to swing away, refusing to let her go until she explains what Em Jay's problem is. Carnage turns and pins Gwen to the alley wall, leaning in close and licking her face while asking if Gwen really wants to have that conversation then and there. Mortis interrupts, teasingly saying she's enjoying the show and asking if Em Jay and Gwen are friends, enemies, or something in-between and complicated. Gwen recognizes Mortis as Dazzler's long-lost sister and says that Alison is looking for her, but Mortis sneers that she couldn't care less and blasts Gwen with bolts of red energy. Carnage dives between them and takes the hit, seriously injuring her, and Gwen furiously webs Mortis' hands together and grabs Carnage. As Ghost-Spider swings away, Mortis cuts through the webbing and snarls that she officially doesn't like Gwen.
As Gwen carries her, Em Jay moans that whatever Mortis hit her with is causing her unbearable pain, the Carnage symbiote withdrawing into her body. As Gwen urges her to hang on, they're engulfed by a cloud of yellow smoke and land in the middle of a cemetery. Gwen asks if Em Jay is alright, but Em Jay transforms into Carnage and snarls that she's pissed off. Gwen nervously complements Carnage's healing factor but is rebuked, looking around and asking where they are. As Carnage replies that it looks like they're in a funhouse, Mysterio appears and taunts them. As Gwen expresses exasperation, Carnage recalls that he was the wimp that Betty trounced at the Halloween house of horrors. Frustrated, Mysterio conjures illusions of the darkness in their hearts--Em Jay's berserk Carnage form and Gwen's berserk Venom form, as well as an undead Betty Brant and Glory Grant. Sporting a determined expression, Gwen tells Carnage that they can triumph if they work together... only for Carnage to nonchalantly smash Mysterio's fishbowl helmet. As his illusions disperse, Mysterio has a panic attack and surrenders, begging for mercy. Wrapping an arm around Gwen's waist, Carnage says they're running late and carries her to where Natasha is waiting with a helicopter.
As Natasha asks Carnage if she's ready to go, Gwen grabs Carnage's shoulder and demands to know what she's talking about. Retracting the symbiote, Em Jay tells Gwen that she and the Carnage symbiote are leaving to join Natasha's teenaged spy crew to learn how to live with each other before they kill someone. As Gwen starts crying, Em Jay interrupts by saying they can have a long-overdo conversation when she gets back. Wiping Gwen's tears away and hugging her, Em Jay thanks Gwen for being her friend and confesses her feelings.
In his office, Orlando laments to Mortis and Mysterio that Carnage has escaped his grasp, though he blames himself for being too eager to test the modifications he'd made to his father's tech. Saying that they need to learn from their failures, Orlando observes that they now know that Gwen has powerful allies. Calling up a display of Ghost-Spider, her allies, and her rogues gallery, Orlando declares that he's deciding to even the odds by assembling a sinister team of his own.
