Giizhigong was one of the God Realms, among the Inner Planes.[2] It was a "pocket" dimension adjacent to Earth, which exists as a boundless spiritual plane, and is the home of the Manidoog beings who were were worshiped as gods by the indigenous populations of North America.[3]
The Giizhigong spiritual plane is the source of the mystic "Orenda" energies which are utilized by the Manidoog for a variety of supernatural effects.[4]
Several interdimensional nexus points connect Giizhigong with the Earth realm; one such nexus point known as Sipapu ("the Place of Emergence") is located at the confluence of the Colorado River and Little Colorado River within the Grand Canyon in Arizona.[3]
Beings other than the Manidoog also exist on the Giizhigong spiritual plane, such as the majestic Thunderbirds and the serpentine Hobomokko.[4]
History
In modern times, when the Manidoog spirit of mischief Nanabozho convinced his brethren Calumet (the spirit of war & peace) and Hotamintanio (the spirit of warriors) to join his campaign against the Europeans who had invaded North America and displaced their worshippers, the trio also attempted to recruit Owayodata (the spirit of the hunt) to their cause. But when Owayodata turned his back on them, the three gods took Owayodata and his mortal Cheyenne champion, Red Wolf, hostage and transported them to Giizhigong for punishment. To rescue Red Wolf, the mystic Navajo warrior Black Crow enlisted the aid of Doctor Strange, who was inadvertently transported to Giizhigong where he confronted Nanabozho, Calumet, and Hotamintanio. Using the Eye of Agamotto, Doctor Strange, Owayodata, and Red Wolf convinced Nanabozho that seeking vengeance was not the same as seeking justice.[5]
