Profanity
Profanity, is an offensive word also known as swearing. Profanity is not allowed in regular issues of Marvel Comics. The writers however got around this by inserting random %&$#?@! symbols. This is known as "grawlix", or "profanitype". MAX Comics was the only exception as it was specifically printed for adult readers.
- Deadpool would regularly swear in his casual conversations.[1]
- Nextwave used skull and crossbones symbols which is now used common place throughout the Marvel Universe. The is due to the "Captain ☠☠☠☠", who liked to swear regularly,[2] until Captain America washed his mouth out with soap.[3]
- Pretty much the current record-holder for duration; Wolverine: "Diplomatic #%@*&%!!@#$@%#%$##@@#$$%$#@#$$#%$#@#$%#%@$#$@$&&&%&@&$#%$##%&&&@&!! immunity?"[4]
- Ultimate Spider-Man has the time a "Freaky Friday" Flip between Spider-Man and Wolverine turns out to be the result of Jean Grey putting Wolverine's mind "where it least wanted to be".[5] After they are returned to normal Spidey told them; "You know why people hate you? It's not because you're mutants!! It's because you're all a bunch of @#$@#$ $@$%@ ##@$!! That's why!! You $^$%^ $%^$ $^$%^ $%#^% #$ $% ^#$%^ $%%^!!! AAAGGHHH!"[6]
- Colossus: Why am I an #$@#$@? I was just standing here.[6]
- Spider-Gwen is very prone to profanity.[7]
- While Alias was part of MAX Comics, The Pulse was not, and writer Brian Michael Bendis had to tone down the at-times foul-mouthed Jessica Jones's dialogue accordingly.[8]
- Another way round it is by using alien words in place of the profanity:
- Kree tend to say "Das't" a lot.[9]
- In Marvel 2099, "shock" is the general all-purpose swear word.[10]
- Mojoverse natives Longshot and Shatterstar use the word "fekt".[11]
- In the Cancerverse, the word "fhtagn" (roughly translating to "dreams," "sleeps," or "waits," and taken from the sentence "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" which originated from H.P. Lovecraft's story Call of Cthulhu) was seemingly used as stand-in for the word "f*@k".[12][13]
- Rocket Raccoon tells a pair of Earth raccoons to "put on some krutacking pants".[14]
- Flarks are often invoked as profanities.[15]
