History
During the Elder God Chthon's last appearance on the mortal plane, the forces of humanity assembled to drive him back, and in the process of doing so sliced off a part of the Dark God. Lost for centuries, that part was forged into Godkiller, a weapon with a hilt of Orichalcum. The Godkiller was immensely powerful, able to cut through any physical and mystical barriers and to drain energy out of anything it touched. It was believed that it could even kill God-like beings, as it was said that only Chthon could kill Chthon. During World War II it was acquired Red Skull who kept it as a contingency in hidden tunnels dug under Wundagore Mountain that remained secret even after Red Skull's death.[1]
In the 2020s, Hydra resurrected Lilith who ended up taking it over. Unhappy with this, Crossbones decided to leak Red Skull's secret to Captain America. Being his usual self, Crossbones went about by taking a bunch of civilians hostage and threatening to obliterate them unless Rogers showed up to face him in person. The showdown in Transia ended with Crossbones falling seemingly to his death, but not before he showed a USB stick with the information into Rogers' hand. After the information was decoded, the Hunter and Wolverine infiltrated the tunnels the recovered the Godkiller, which immediately spoke to Hunter's mind and showed them a vision of Chthon.[1]
Back at the Abbey, Doctor Strange performed research on the Godkiller that uncovered its origins and capabilities. It was also determined that the Hunter was the only one able to wield, as attempts by anyone else to touch it ended violently. A plan was formulated to use the Godkiller to kill Lilith, with all of the Midnight Suns and the Avengers teaming together for the final mission. However Lilith revealed that her intention was to bring forth Chthon only so that she could kill him and end his stranglehold over her. Unfortunately, Lilith broke the Hunter's collar which allowed Chthon to take their body over and stab Lilith with Godkiller. The Hunter was able to shake off Chthon's possession and together with others formed a protective seal to banish Chthon once again. Lilith then used the Godkiller to stab Darkhold itself, severely weakening Chthon and allowing for his influenced to be removed, while the final fate of the Dark God himself remained uncertain.[1]Properties
