History

Old Days[]

It is unclear if the "Old Days" are supposed to be either at the end of the Elder Days, or during an earlier era within the Pre-Cataclysmic Age.

After men almost defeated Enchanted Domain during a bloody battle, their mighty king made a pact with the Enchanted Domain, and the king left a golden blade in the trunk of the Eternal Tree as a sign of good faith. Only a man as noble as that king could remove the blade, and only the king of Valusia could enter the lake.[1]

Pre-Cataclysmic Age[]

The kings of Valusia seemingly knew of the Enchanted Domain, but not of the golden blade left in the Eternal Tree.[1]

Age of Kull[]

Circa 18,5000 BC, after Thulsa Doom, in the guise of Lady Delcardes' slave Kuthulos and speaking as if he was Delcardes' alleged talking and clairvoyant cat of the Old Race Saremes, informed King Kull that Brule was detained by demons beneath the Forbidden Lake, Kull headed there. Fighting a tentacled water-creature, a water-walking giant spider, and a shaeshifting water-creature, he finally arrived at the Eternal Tree, from which he unsheathed a golden blade, before being snatched by a giant serpent.

Eventually arriving in the Enchanted Domain, Kull was met with the dwellers of the kingdom, led by their king, who initially intended to slay Kull, until the king recognized the blade wielded by Kull. He halted the attack, recounted Kull of the story of his people, and informed him that Brule wasn't here. A steed was provided for Kull to return to the surface, taking the golden blade with him as he confronted Saremes and Delcardes, prompting Thulsa Doom to reveal himself.[1]

Kull wielded the golden blade as he campaigned against the Lemurian pirates, fought Demontur in Wolf-form, helped depose Dom Vinsala,[2] as he was informed by Count Murom Bora Ballin of the Scorpion's conspiracy,[3] and as he campaigned against the invading Zarfhaanans led by Queen Veria and threatening Kamula. After Kull was captured in battle by the Zarfhaanans, the golden blade was returned by a Zarfhaana warrior-women to the Valusians, to taunt them and prove to them the capture of Kull. He donned it again to meet the Kamulans and accept their gratitude.[4]

Properties

The golden blade was magic, and its grip changed to meet its wielder.[1]

Notes

Trivia

  • Despite being wielded by Kull in the story "Wolfshead" (Kull the Conqueror #8; May, 1973), the golden blade doesn't appear as the sword used by Kull on the cover, unlike for the covers of Kull the Conqueror #7 (March, 1973) and #10 (September, 1973).
