History

As a child, Grace Lavreaux discovered that she had the power to open portals to an astral plane, and that within it, she had the power to reshape it as she desired. Dubbing it 'Neverneverland', she visited it often, transforming it into a sprawling fantasy world. However, as she grew older, she stopped visiting, choosing instead to live in reality. She married and had a son.

A few years later, however, tragedy struck. Grace and her family were caught in a car crash. She tried to open a portal to Neverneverland to take her husband and son to safety, but was unsuccessful. The trauma of her loss left her almost comatose and unable to open new portals.

Grace was eventually treated by Charles Xavier, who identified her as a mutant, and helped her recover. However, he was unable to help her regain her portal ability. Eventually, she rebuilt her life, selling souvenirs to tourists on the beachfront at Saint Barthélemy. She was in the vicinity when Scott Summers and Jean Grey were forcibly thrown into the future while on their honeymoon, and the psionic shockwave caused by their disappearance overcame her mental blocks, reactivating her mutant powers.

Her powers now out of control, the portal she opened to Neverneverland was now beginning to consume the world around it. This drew the attention of Nick Fury and SHIELD, who sent an investigative team into the portal. Before losing contact, Grace was able to tell them that she needed Xavier's help or that of his students.

Scott and Jean, who had returned from their time in the future, entered the portal where they met Grace and learned her story. Jean realized that Grace had repressed the truth about the death of her son and husband, and used her telepathy to give her the illusion that they had made it through the portal safely. As Grace had total control over the world within the portal, by believing her family had come to life, she was able to recreate them within the astral world. She allowed Scott and Jean to return home, before sealing the portal from the inside, living out the rest of her life with the illusions of her family.[1]

Trivia

  • There are noted parallels between Grace and Nevernever land with Jimmy Jupiter and Nowhere.[1] Especially if those able to access Nowhere are born once every generation.[2]
