The Great Rift is a vast, bottomless chasm located in the southern part of Avalon, serving as a boundary between the realms of Otherworld and the Netherworld.

History

Gafael and Gog fall into the Great Rift

Situated at the heart of southern Avalon, the Great Rift lies east of the Valley of Wailing Mists and west of the Mountains of Misery. This endless abyss plunges deep into the Netherworld, the domain of the Nethergods, and falling into its depths is a death sentence. At the rift's center, atop a hill, stands Necromon's Castle, a stone citadel now positioned in the Netherworld.

Following the fall of King Arthur in the 6th century, the mage Merlyn reconstructed Camelot, building Castle Camelot near the Great Rift to guard the fragile boundary between Otherworld and the Netherworld. When Necromon assembled his forces to destroy Camelot, the noble Gafael defended the Castle's bridge, preventing the goblin Gog from entering by hurling himself at him. Both fell into the abyss.

Camelot fell into the abyss

As the conflict between Necromon's dark forces and Camelot raged on, the bridge supporting the Castle grew weaker, drained by Merlyn's diminishing strength. At this crucial moment, Necromon and his generals emerged from the depths of the Great Rift, leading the assault personally. When Necromon was fatally struck by the Black Knight and King Arthur, he tore free the castle's portcullis and hurled it, smashing the bridge that secured Camelot to Otherworld. Both Necromon and Camelot plunged into the abyss. The Court of Camelot was relocated to Vortigen's Castle, and the Great Rift and its surroundings lay desolate for many years.

In time, Otherworld was invaded by Horoam'ce, the Goat of Self-Propagation, and his army of undead. The Goat's forces conquered everything beyond the Great Rift and the Wailing Mists, until the Goat was eventually defeated.

Birmingham squats over the Rift

Later, when the Manchester Gods rose in the north of Avalon, Birmingham, the first child of Manchester, made his way south toward the Great Rift. There, he squatted over the rift, supported by a dozen road-wide legs. After the Manchester Gods sacrificed themselves to save Earth, the Great Rift was finally freed from their influence.
