Meredith Quill put together a mix tape she titled "Awesome Mix Vol. 1" so her son Peter could know all the songs she used to listen to when she was growing up. In 1988, Meredith was dying from cancer, and gave him a second tape as a gift moments before she died. However, Peter never opened the gift. After the Ravagers abducted him, the tape was one of Peter's few mementos from Earth, and he kept it with him into adulthood. He finally opened his mother's gift, Awesome Mix Vol. 2, after he and the other Guardians of the Galaxy saved Xandar from the mad Kree Ronan.[1]

In this reality, the mix tape is renamed as "Cosmic Mix" instead. The tapes music track list includes:

  • A soundtrack album called Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 was released, which contained those very same songs featured in the film Guardians of the Galaxy.
  • The song "Spirit in the Sky" does not appear in the film but is in one of the promotional trailers for the film and so is on the film's soundtrack.
  • The in movie mixtape does not include "I Want You Back" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". These songs were in the film and so appeared on the film's soundtrack, but were actually the first two tracks on Awesome Mix Vol. 2 which was discovered by Peter at the end of the film.
  • The songs "Wham Bam Shang-A-Lang" and "Come a Little Bit Closer were not heard until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
