The Guardians of the Galaxy have been idealized by Peter Quill, the legendary Star-Lord, as a pro-active team to protect the cosmos. Quill idealized the team in light of two subsequent crisis that had forced independent heroes to improvise a resistance when the galaxy was threatened, namely the incursion of the Annihilation Wave and the conquest of the Kree Empire by the Phalanx. The Guardians of the Galaxy usually transit between being a sanctioned police force in space or a group of outlawed mercenaries. By expecting no one else would do their heroic work, their goal is to protect innocent civilizations from being destroyed or enslaved by opportunistic invaders.[5]

History

To Guard the Galaxy[]

Considering that independent cosmic heroes had been forced to join their might to combat the incursion of Annihilus and his Annihilation Wave into the universe[6] and Ultron and the Phalanx conquest of the Kree Empire,[7] Peter Quill, the champion legendarily known as the Star-Lord, decided to establish a proactive force to guard the galaxy without improvisation. On the recommendation of his ally Nova, the Human Rocket, Quill established a base of operations for his prospective group at the neutral station Knowhere, which conveniently had a teleportation system with near-universal range, an intelligent and psychic Soviet dog called Cosmo as its chief of security and galactic liaison to the new team[5] and the super hero team known as the Luminals of Xarth, who became Quill's rivals and neighbors.[8]

For his team, Quill enlisted former teammates and previous convicted criminals he had worked with in a special mission for the Kree Empire during the Phalanx conquest:[9] weapons expert and tactical genius Rocket and the psychic counselor Mantis. Moreover, he recruited the cosmically powerful heroes who had also played parts during the previous crises, namely Phyla-Vell, the Protector of the Universe named Quasar and wielder of the Quantum Bands, and the recently reborn Warlock, a cosmic sorcerer and former possessor of the Infinity Stones. The deadly assassins Gamora, who had a reputation as the most dangerous woman in the galaxy, and Drax the Destroyer rounded up the team.[5]

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 1 Textless

In their first mission, the group clashed with the revitalized Universal Church of Truth in their gigantic Templeship to stop their brutal journey of forcedly converting people to their faith. During the catastrophic ordeal, Warlock realized the fabric of space-time was fragilized due to so many aggressions, paving way to interlopers to invade the universe.[5] One of these invaders came in the form of a mass of "Limbo Ice", which revealed a semi-amnesiac champion who identified himself as Major Vance Astro, of the Guardians of the Galaxy from a thousand years in the future. Astro's declaration inspired Rocket baptize their unnamed team as the 'Guardians of the Galaxy.[1]

The Guardians then confronted the Cardinals of the Universal Church of Truth in another temple, while Astro was targeted aboard Knowhere by Starhawk.[10] Matters worsened when Knowhere was revealed to have been infiltrated by shapeshifting Skrulls, inciting mistrust among the team and the Luminals as Knowhere was put under a lockdown. Simultaneously, Warlock worried about the team not being allowed to act independently within Knowhere and Drax went rogue after learning that Quill had directed Mantis to telepathically coerce the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy into joining his initiative without question.[8] Using a synapse disruptor, Drax murdered every being in Knowhere for a limited amount of time in a process that revealed the Skrulls aboard. The situation escalated with another attack by another version of Starhawk. Although the Skrulls were shown to be pacifists and Starhawk got arrested, these events led to the public revelation that Quill had tampered with his teammates' minds, something that eroded the team.[11]

With most of the members leaving the team, Rocket kept the Guardians of the Galaxy alive with Mantis, Astro and his former allies, the colossal Groot and the gallant warrior from Microverse Bug, to fight the Badoon in the Spartax Empire. Meanwhile, Quill became a prisoner of the brutal Blastaar in the Negative Zone[12] after being banished by the Kree Accuser Ronan.[13] Wishing to access Earth, Blastaar had Quill siege the abandoned superhuman prison known as 42, created by the Initiative to house anti-registration forces. Quill teamed up with the rebellion led by Jack Flag and contacted the Guardians for help. Flag directed him to a telepath who was able to contact Mantis and get the Guardians to teleport into the Negative Zone to help fend off Blastaar's attack.[14] After rescuing Quill, the Guardians escaped the Negative Zone, keeping its access to the universe shuttered. Jack Flag stayed with the team for their next adventures.[15]

War of Kings[]

The former members of the Guardians went to their own quests apart from the Guardians. Warlock and Gamora tackled the Universal Church of the Truth, with Warlock planning to lead them as he had predicted another war would erupt between the Kree and the Shi'ar empires. Meanwhile, when looking for the human girl Cammi, Drax and Quasar learned their fate was intertwined with Moondragon, Drax's daughter and Quasar's lover who had been deceased since Ultron's conquest of the Kree empire. With Mentor's intervention,[16] Drax and Quasar went to the realm of Oblivion, where Phyla-Vell missed her Quantum Bands who had empowered her as Quasar. In their confusion, they were ambushed by Maelstrom, who wielded the Quantum Bands.[17] During the fight, the Dragon of the Moon consumed Phyla-Vell. As Drax continued to resist the Maelstrom, the original Quasar, Wendell Vaughn, came to his rescue. As Martyr, Phyla-Vell burst out of the Dragon's belly with a revived Moondragon. Martyr had secretly agreed to become the new avatar of Death in the belly of the beast in order to return Moondragon.[18]

The Guardians of the Galaxy reunited as one operation to prepare for the war between the Shi'ar Emperor Vulcan, a mutant usurper, and the Inhuman Royal Family, ruled by King of the Kree Black Bolt. Warlock expected that their war would harm the fabric of the universe even further, prompting the Guardians of the Galaxy to try to prevent the imminent attacks. They split up to diplomatically discuss the consequences of the war with both sides. Rocket's team was attacked by Vulcan when sabotaging his aggressions, but were rescued and joined by the Starjammers.[19] Together, the two teams overpowered the Shi'ar Imperial Guard and had its mighty Gladiator join their cause in order to depose Vulcan and restore the throne to Majestrix Lilandra.[20]

In the Kree section, Quill's team failed at convincing the Inhumans to cease fire. Back to Knowhere, the Guardians were followed by the Imperial Guard and the Inhumans, since Warlock had been magically tagged by the guardswoman witch Magique and Martyr had taken the Inhuman princess Crystal hostage.[21] The Inhumans left after rescuing Crystal, and the Guardians dealt with the Imperial Guard by themselves in Knowhere. Warlock secretly manifested his evil future self, the Magus, to help the Guardians of the Galaxy to drive the invaders out. Simultaneously, Moondragon was influenced to release Starhawk from her imprisonment, which allowed her to kidnap some Guardians and lead them to a journey across the timestream in another attempt to prevent the collapse of the fabric of existence.[22]

As Majestrix Lilandra had been murdered,[23] a direct attack against Vulcan was made necessary. The Inhumans launched a Terrigen Bomb to the Shi'ar Galaxy.[24] Detonated by Black Bolt's sacrifice, the bomb caused Vulcan to perish[25] and opened a dimensional rift in the universe which was named the Fault. In the future, the Guardians kidnapped by Starhawk met their counterparts from the 31st century and learned that the Fault had caused severe damage in the flux of the timestream. They emitted a message to Warlock to prevent the Fault from expanding.[26] In the present, the remaining Guardians of the Galaxy joined forces with the Inhuman Royals to assess the Fault as Warlock used the Universal Church's faith engines to empower himself and stabilize the fissure. Warlock was successful in his spell but was immediately murdered by Martyr. In retaliation, Gamora killed Martyr, but was then disposed of by Warlock himself, who had ascended as the Magus.[27]

In the future, the Guardians of the Galaxy learned about the Magus' ascension.[28] With Kang the Conqueror's help, the Guardians were sent back in time to stop the Magus as he would force all the possibilities to converge. Wielding a Cosmic Cube gifted by Kang, Quill attempted to prevent the death of his teammates, but failed as several Guardians were murdered by the Magus. In the end, Quill shot Warlock dead, ending the threat of the Magus.[29]

The Fault[]

The surviving Guardians of the Galaxy researched the dimension locked beyond the Fault. The cancerous and infectious entities that lived in it attacked Moondragon after the Luminals explored the Fault in Knowhere.[30] The vicious entities were also worshipped by the believers of the collapsed Universal Church of the Truth. By becoming a host of one of the monsters, Moondragon learned that they came from a parallel Cancerverse, a reality where death did not exist, and life was all-enduring. She was then kidnapped by the Universal Church's leader, the Matriarch.[31] To successfully rescue Moondragon, Rocket navigated Knowhere itself with the Guardians and the Luminals aboard to her location. Finally safe and freed from the Cancerverse infection, Moondragon was able to realize her apparently dead teammates were alive. In fact, they were trapped by the Church's actual leader, the very much alive Magus.[32]

The Magus had faked his death and kept the Guardians in the catacombs of one of the Church's temples in Sacrosanct as part of his plan to bring the Cancerverse into the universe. As the avatar of Death, Martyr managed to contact Moondragon and free her teammates.[33] As the other Guardians dealt with diplomatic issues concerning the Galactic Council, Martyr was tricked by Maelstrom into releasing the Magus' archenemy from a restorative cocoon in the temple. Believing the adversary to be Warlock, she was shocked when he was revealed to be her predecessor as the avatar of Death, the Mad Titan Thanos. Back to life, Thanos murdered Martyr.[34] The Guardians of the Galaxy gathered to fight him, with Quill defeating and arresting him using the last powers of the Cosmic Cube.[35]

The Magus and the Universal Church intervened in the Fault, sacrificing their forces to allow the creatures from the Cancerverse to invade the universe. Being successful, the Magus was greeted and murdered by the undying Lord Mar-Vell, who wanted to destroy Death for good in the universe. The Guardians of the Galaxy, when evaluating Thanos' condition, learned about this invasion as Thanos broke free.[36] Rocket stopped Thanos, calling a truce as Quill realized that bringing the deathbringer Thanos to the Cancerverse could be the only viable solution. Thanos guided the Guardians of the Galaxy to the Cancerverse while Nova and Quasar directed the Galactic Council's armada to stop Mar-Vell's Revengers.[37] After destroying the Defenders in Cancerverse, Thanos and the Guardians were approached by the Vision, a member of the Machine Resistance, artificial beings who had not been corrupted by endless life and offered help in Titan.[38]

Mar-Vell planned to perform a Necropsy ritual by assassinating Death's avatar just like he had done in his home reality. On the other hand, Thanos planned to reverse the ritual and restore Death in Mar-Vell's reality. However, Drax succumbed to his urges to destroy Thanos and ended up disintegrating the Mad Titan in the Cancerverse.[39] Rejected by Death, Thanos was spontaneously resurrected and permanently killed Drax in retaliation. Drax' demise led Mar-Vell to locate the Guardians in Titan.[40] Thanks to the defective Revenger Scarlet Witch, the Guardians of the Galaxy were able to invade Mar-Vell's base in Sanctuary. Meanwhile, Nova abandoned the Galactic Council's fight to join Quill and the Guardians and stop the source of Mar-Vell's attack.[41] In a direct confrontation against Mar-Vell and the Revengers, Thanos asked to be mercy-killed, which allowed Death to access Mar-Vell and end him saving the universe from his endless life. Meanwhile, Nova rescued the Guardians, who were transported away from the terminal universe. Using Kang's Cosmic Cube, Peter Quill and Nova stayed in the Cancerverse to trap Thanos behind. Following their sacrifice, the Guardians of the Galaxy discontinued their operations.[42] To keep their legacy alive, Quasar and Cosmo formed a group of mighty protectors with ties to the Galactic Council, the Annihilators.[43]

In the Cancerverse, Quill and Nova struggled to combat Thanos, being joined by a revived Drax.[28] The Revengers interrupted the fight, being able to acquire the Cosmic Cube,[29] which was subsequently usurped by Thanos. In the end, Nova sacrificed himself by using the power of the Cosmic Cube to transport Quill, Drax and Thanos back to the regular universe.[30] Learning that his father, Emperor J'son of Spartax and a member of the Galactic Council, had interests on Earth, Quill decided to reassemble the Guardians of the Galaxy to keep watch over his home planet.[44][45]

Cosmic Avengers[]

Guardians of the Galaxy (Earth-616) from Avengers Assemble Vol 2 4

The Guardians are back

In his quest for death, Thanos and his Zodiac had managed to acquire cosmic weapons from the U.S. Army on Earth. The Mad Titan met opposition in Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers and retreated.[46] After learning that Thanos had distracted them from Earth by staging a Badoon invasion, the Guardians of the Galaxy traveled to the Avengers Tower to assist the Avengers. Together, the two teams discovered Thanos was in possession of a Cosmic Cube replica and space-traveled to stop him.[47] In Moord, the homeland of the Badoon, Thanos carried on his plans of obliterating Earth. As the Avengers and the Guardians made way through the Badoon army in Moord, Thanos ascended to godhood using the Cube.[48] Thanos sent the heroes to the Cancerverse, where Iron Man discovered that the Cosmic Cube had defects for being a copy. With Thanos' weapon being rendered useless by the heroes, he was taken into custody by the Elders of the Universe. The Guardians of the Galaxy returned to space, inviting Iron Man to join them. Moreover, following the ordeal, the Badoon considered Earth a threat to be terminated.[49][50]

King J'son alerted Quill that the Galactic Council had decided that Earth was a neutral zone where no alien civilization should act on, including the Guardians of the Galaxy. Quill expected that the decree would only aggravate animosities and instantly ventured to Earth with the Guardians to make sure it was safe. As expected, they discovered a Badoon warship heading to attack Earth.[44] After successfully defeating the Badoon, the Guardians were arrested by the galactic police as a result of the machinations of J'son of Spartax.[51] Although taken to a prison ship and locked in containment cells, the Guardians were ultimately freed by their companion Groot who had not been restrained. Reacquiring their arsenal, which had been confiscated, the Guardians of the Galaxy took the Spartax battleship for themselves[52] and celebrated their victory. During the party, a bounty hunter attempted to assault Gamora but was stopped.[53]

Treated as fugitive criminals and continuing to guard Earth, the Guardians of the Galaxy focused on the collapse of the space-time continuum. After consulting Mantis, Quill secretly approached Thanos for further explanations, learning that Earth was in fact the source of the disaster. Meanwhile, the Guardians intercepted an interdimensional interloper on the Moon.[54] The deadly warrior known as Angela was revealed to had been lost in space as a result of the crisis Quill worried about. After difficultly knocking Angela out, the Guardians found out she was not a threat and escorted her to Earth, gaining a precious ally.[55]

Thanos directed his lieutenants to an unprotected Earth in order to search for the Infinity Stones and murder his son Thane.[56] With no Avengers on the planet, S.W.O.R.D. agents failed to resist the nightmarish armada and were captured in their station, the Peak. Director Abigail Brand contacted the Guardians for help. They rescued her but were countered by Thanos' agents.[57] Angela helped her allies to combat their enemies. The Guardians' intervention allowed the Avenger Captain Marvel to fly the Avengers back to Earth after fighting a war in space against the Builders and secretly stop Thanos.[58] The Guardians searched for Thanos in Moord with no success as they did not know he was kept on Earth, but managed to liberate slaves from the Badoon.[59]

When Rocket gathered intel about the Shi'ar Empire's decision to arrest the young Jean Grey of the time-displaced X-Men from the past to put her on trial for her future crimes as the Dark Phoenix, the Guardians of the Galaxy decided to intervene. Following a Shi'ar ship to Earth, they were too late and unable to prevent the kidnapping.[60] Together with the X-Men under Kitty Pryde's supervision, the Guardians of the Galaxy tracked Jean Grey. While on the trail, their ship was attacked by the Shi'ar, but they were joined by the Starjammers.[61][62] The Guardians, the X-Men and the Starjammers managed to arrive to the Chandilar, where they confronted the Imperial Guard.[63] After escaping captivity, Jean Grey beat Majestor Gladiator and refused to be at the Shi'ar's mercy in a display of force. The Guardians of the Galaxy and the Starjammers accompanied the X-Men back to Earth, consolidating a friendship between the members of the uncannily different groups.[64]

Emperor Quill[]

Captain Marvel saves Peter Quill

Iron Man appointed Agent Venom to join the Guardians of the Galaxy as Earth's liaison for the Avengers.[65] Shortly after, J'Son directed his fleet against Quill and had the Guardians separately deal with different enemies, effectively disbanding the team as part of his manipulations. Rocket was tested in Kree torture laboratories, Gamora struggled in the Badoon fight arenas, Groot was left to die in Rigel 8 by brutal the Brood, Drax stood trial by the Shi'ar and Venom was violated by Skrulls.[66] However, the Guardians' ally Captain Marvel was not accounted for and saved Peter Quill from his father and the Spartax Empire. Before departing, Quill damaged his father's reputation by publicly exposing his nature as a heartless and corrupt king to Spartax.[67] Quill and Captain Marvel gathered the rest of the Guardians, who had thrived in their challenging situations. Venom was an exception, as he had gone missing after evading the Skrulls.[68] Venom caused troubled in Knowhere as his parasitic symbiote acted erratically and brutalized civilians. The Guardians intercepted him by chance, separating him from his symbiote.[69] The symbiote was not properly contained and infected some of the Guardians in their ship, causing mayhem. As the Guardians fought the Venom symbiote, they were taken to planet Klyntar, the home of symbiotes, where Agent Venom recovered his control over his sanity.[70]

Traveling back to Earth, the Guardians were chased and by Chitauri troops captained by Nebula. As their ship crashed after being attacked, they were greeted by the Avengers, who joined them in fighting the Chitauri. Nebula incapacitated both groups using a genetic disrupter[71] and was revealed to have been hired by the planet ruler Kindun to kidnap Gamora as part of a revenge plan he had for Thanos due to past aggressions. The Guardians and the Avengers rescued Gamora and escaped Kindun.[72]

Around this period, the Spartax Council decided to coronate a new Emperor as J'son had been dethroned. Peter Quill was nominated based on his opposition to his father and his activities to benefit he galaxy. Although the legendary Star-Lord himself had no idea he had been nominated, his candidacy was extremely popular in Spartax and he was elected as their leader in absentia.[70] During the rise of his unexpected political career, Quill kept a low profile, but was hunted down by the Slaughter Squad. The mercenaries acted on the orders of his father, who had adopted the identity of the crime-lord Mister Knife and wished to acquire the Black Vortex, an item that cosmically unleashed the cosmic potential of those who communed with it. Quill evaded his opponents alongside his long-distance girlfriend Kitty Pryde.[73]

Fearing of such powerful item as the Black Vortex being in Mister Knife's hand, Quill and Pryde stole the artifact and turned to the Guardians of the Galaxy and the X-Men for help. The cosmically empowered Slaughter Squad, now the Slaughter Lords, outmatched the heroes to retrieve the Black Vortex. During the battle, Gamora submitted to the Black Vortex's power,[74] giving the Guardians and the X-Men the necessary edge to escape to Spartax's moon, where Quill tried to convince his allies to get boosted by the Black Vortex. Pryde contested by claiming that its powers could be corruptive. The X-Men Beast[75] and Angel submitted and were subverted by the immense power alongside Gamora. Betraying their allies, they escaped with the Vortex.[76]

While Gamora, Beast and Angel assaulted Hala in retaliation for Kree Accusers stealing the Black Vortex, the Guardians of the Galaxy and the X-Men were attacked by Mister Knife's flying fortress, but managed to flee on Quill's Bad Boy.[77] Subsequently coming across the Starjammers and having them joined to their mission, the heroes split up to protect Hala.[78] Ronan the Accuser empowered himself with the Black Vortex and fended off the attackers,[79] but Mister Knife arrived to recover the Vortex, employing the entire firepower of his flying fortress to utterly destroy Hala. The Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men were able to escape the total obliteration of the capital of the Kree Empire.[80]

As Mister Knife finally recovered the Vortex,[81] he used it on his ally Thane, who proceeded to encase the entirety of Spartax in an amber construct, trapping its inhabitants in a state of living death. Mister Knife had made a deal with the Brood, providing them with the host bodies necessary to reproduce, in exchange of having them as allies in his planetary conquest.[82] When the heroes retrieved the Black Vortex once again,[83] Kitty Pryde enhanced her abilities and phased Spartax through the amber carcass, saving the planet and its inhabitants. Once the dust settled and the Black Vortex was dealt with, Quill proposed to Pryde.[84]

With J'son finally out of the picture, President Quill could not escape his obligations to planet Spartax. The Guardians accompanied Quill to assist him in his role as the ruler of Spartax.[85] Kindun tracked Gamora to Spartax and threatened to ravage the world with his Chitauri army. In a display of force, Gamora convinced Kindun to leave her and her allies in peace as she should not be blamed for her father Thanos' actions. He complied, but the cosmically enhanced Gamora decided to leave the Guardians as a way not to put them at peril again.[86]

Her cosmic senses allowed her to see through the illusion crafted by Emperor Doom following the destruction of the Multiverse. In a reshaped world, with nothing else but one planet, the Guardians had no galaxy to protect and operated in Knowhere as rebels to Doom's rule.[87] Knowhere was seized by Yotat the Destroyer, who also sought revenge on Drax for intervening in a past ordeal involving Rocket and the mob boss Giogo.[88] Being helped by Doom's agent from the Thor Corps Angela and the Nova Corps, the Guardians defeated Yotat, but the blasphemous Gamora was violently interrogated by Angela.[89] They were interrupted by a surviving Kree Accuser who was difficultly subdued by the Guardians. The partially amnesiac group was then greeted by Quill, who had survived the death of the multiverse and enlisted his teammates in the final war against Doom,[90] to restore the previous existence.[91]

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 4 1 Schiti Variant Textless

As reality brought back, the Guardians eventually left Quill behind with the crown of Spartax. Kitty Pryde succeed him as "Star-Lord," while Rocket became the sole leader of the team. Additionally, the group counted with the Thing of the defunct Fantastic Four among their ranks.[92] When introducing the Thing to Knowhere, the Guardians confronted Yotat as he attempted to control the station, cementing a rivalry between him and Drax. Yotat was arrested by the Knowhere Corps, mainly formed by former Guardians of the Galaxy who policed Knowhere.[93]

In one of their adventures, the Guardians stole an artifact from the Chitauri and reencountered Quill in Spartax to examine it. The last Kree Accuser, having taken the name Hala after her destroyed homeworld, attacked Spartax in a crusade against Peter Quill for his participation in the destruction of the crown jewel of the Kree Empire. Gamora spent all of her cosmic powers to prevent the attack, but failed.[92] Hala brutalized the Spartax army to punish the Guardians.[94] Meanwhile, Annihilus and the Brood Queen incited a vengeful Yotat to take advantage of the Guardians being fragilized.[95] Alongside Quill, the Guardians defeated Hala, but were astonished by Yotat.[96], Quill rejoined the Guardians when Spartax delegates ousted Quill from power due to the damage caused by the battle. Annihilus and the Brood Queen were successful in destabilizing Spartax politics and in making Guardians of the Galaxy wanted once again.[93]

Grounded[]

As fugitives, the Guardians of the Galaxy opposed the Badoon as per Gamora's suggestion, in an effort to end their endless slavery by liberating a prison planet where Angela had been kept. To accomplish their mission, the group split up.[97] This caused Quill to be arrested and placed in their gladiator arena in Moord.[98] Gamora, after being restrained, was able to use her last remaining fraction of the Black Vortex power-up to defeat the warden of the prison planet and free Angela.[99] Reunited, the Guardians of the Galaxy destroyed the Brotherhood of the Badoon and brought freedom to uncountable souls.[100]

Following the end of the dreadful Badoon Empire, the Guardians traveled to Earth at the request of Captain Marvel in order to join her side in a superhuman civil war, concerning the use of predictive knowledge to proactively arrest criminals before they could commit crimes. Fighting on her behalf, the Guardians found themselves against the forces that opposed her led by their former teammate Iron Man.[100][101] During the ensuing battle, the Guardians' ship was destroyed, leaving them stranded on Earth.[102][103]

To make matters worse, Thanos was imprisoned on Earth after igniting the war.[104] Captain Marvel decided to share that information solely with Quill, keeping it from Gamora and Drax.[105] When Gamora found out about Thanos being kept in the Triskelion, she went rogue, cutting ties with Captain Marvel and Quill. Although Quill decided to come clean and share the situation with the rest of his teammates, the damage had been done, and both Rocket and Drax decided to walk away.[106] The Thing left the team to act as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and investigate Doctor Doom.[107] Pryde also left, accepting the position of the leader of the X-Men.[108]

Gamora was tracked and arrested by Captain Marvel's forces, namely Alpha Flight and the Ultimates.[109] Influenced and assisted by Annihilus, the Brood Queen and the Badoon, Thanos unleashed his deadly rage upon Earth. The Guardians of the Galaxy on Earth, past and present, gathered to stop the Mad Titan's invasion. Gamora freed herself to guide the final blow, and Thanos was ultimately defeated and arrested by the recently reinstated Nova Corps. Rocket built the Guardians a makeshift ship with scraps from the Chaparanga beach and the Guardians of the Galaxy left Earth to the stars.[110]

Infinity Quest[]

During ensuing adventures, members of the Guardians of the Galaxy suffered great changes. Drax gave up on violence after his brutish recklessness caused the death of innocent slaves he had intended to save.[111] Groot was attacked by the Gardener, who had been maddened by Loki the God of Mischief and used Groot's body to build an army of twisted tree-like creatures[112] which prevented Groot from regrowing his entire body and got him stuck in a small size.[113] Gamora was haunted in her nightmares by a fraction of her soul that had been lost for years in the disturbed Soulworld inside the Soul Stone and decided to reacquire the Infinity Stone.[114] Quill had the group perform one last mission together before they could walk their own path.[115]

The Guardians' activities as outlaws made them clash with the law-enforcing Nova Corps. During their last mission, a task the Guardians took on Grandmaster's behalf, they stole a ship from the Nova Corps previously owned by the Fraternity of Raptors[116] and renamed it as the Milano. As part of a heist, the Guardians collected a miniature universe from Citopia for the Grandmaster. The Grandmaster then sent the Guardians to steal the Hujahdarian Monarch Egg from the Collector's collection in exchange for fortune and secrets.[113] When infiltrating the Collector's castle, they were captured.[117] The Guardians of the Galaxy managed to break free as Gamora made a threatening deal with the Collector to trick the Grandmaster, as part of her journey to possess the Soul Stone.[118]

As the Guardians marched back to the Grandmaster, the Raptors attacked Milano, an opportunity their leader Talonar took to retrieve the Nega-Bands that belonged to the Kree hero Mar-Vell. Rocket managed to keep one of the bands but was poisoned during the fight for it.[119] Quill traded the band for an antidote and managed to banish Talonar to a remote part of the galaxy.[120] Finally meeting the Grandmaster, the Guardians of the Galaxy found themselves caught up in the brotherly war between the two Elders of the Universe, which unexpectedly ended up with a truce. The Grandmaster and the Collector determined the events behind the missing Infinity Stones and the missing Elders of the Universe were not a coincidence and could help them uncover secret machinations.[121] As part of their investigations on the whereabouts of the Infinity Stones, the Guardians visited Earth. Milano was infiltrated by the size-altering hero Ant-Man who asked to join the Guardians as a way to abandon Earth following him being blackmailed by the fallen Hydra Empire.[122]

The Guardians were enlisted to the corrupted Nova Corps by Commander Adsit as the Raptors represented a common enemy. Relocated to the the Rock, the Guardians of the Galaxy joined the Nova Corps and searched for infiltrators within it. Moreover, it was revealed that Thanos had escaped the Corps' custody. In the Rock, Quill learned his friend Nova, who had seemingly perished in the Cancerverse, was alive. They met up and look for rogue spies in a resisting post led by Nova Eve Bakian in planet Xitaung, where the Power Stone was found. Gamora and Ant-Man learned that Ultron had infected uncountable souls with the Ultron Virus in the galaxy, transforming them into cyborg slaves, and managed to rescue some refuges.[123] At the same time, Drax discovered that Novas ordered by the Fraternity of Raptors had bargained for Thanos' freedom in order to damage the Nova Corps' reputation. This led the Nova Corps to start getting partially rid of its enemies within.[124]

Rocket ultimately argued that the exemplary Novas should be treated as traitors, while the crooked ones should compose his striking force against the Raptors. Meanwhile, the Gardener's arboreal army attack Knowhere, prompting Cosmo to summon the Guardians of the Galaxy. As the Guardians eliminated the soldiers, Groot was empowered and grew larger.[125] The Guardians of the Galaxy went to Telferina to fight the Gardener, when Drax left the group and was asked by Quill to guard Bakian's fort and the Power Stone.[126] Subjugated by Thanos,[127] the Chitauri had a dissident faction led by the Warbringer to acquire the Power Stone and liberate his people from the Mad Titan.[128] Drax protected the Stone and the Novas from both Talonar and the Warbringer. In Telferina, the Guardians broke the Gardener free, restoring Groot to his full power and faculties.[129]

In Xitaung, the Guardians joined Drax[130] With the retreat of the Raptors after Nova learned Talonar was his brainwashed brother, the Guardians were able to use the Power Stone to fend off the Chitauri, an ordeal where Ant-Man was declared missing in action.[131] Back to Knowhere, Quill was gifted the Reality Stone by the Grandmaster and the Collector. He was interrupted by versions of Phyla-Vell and Moondragon from a more heroic alternate Earth who claimed the Stone for their own as it came from their universe.[132]

Requiem[]

In Oblitus, the Guardians were approached by Warlock, who had been resurrected by Kang the Conqueror. While Kang wished for the Time Stone, Warlock was in possession of the Soul Stone, which he had collected from Ultron. Gamora attempted to force Warlock to hand over the Soul Stone, and a fight broke out. During the battle, Drax managed to hold it and was exposed to the corruption of Soulworld, striking Gamora to prevent her from opening the gem and departing with Warlock and Kang. In addition to Drax's betrayal, the other Guardians refused to follow Gamora into pursuing Kang. Outraged by her teammates' behavior, Gamora also left them to obtain the Soul Stone on her own. Following this turn of events, Doctor Strange assembled the possessors of the Infinity Stones[132] in a new formation of the Infinity Watch. As the wielder of the Power Stone, Star-Lord joined them alongside Rocket and Groot after declaring that the Guardians of the Galaxy were no more.[133]

Doctor Strange feared for Thanos assembling the Infinity Gauntlet once again. Unknown to him and the Watch, Thanos and his Chitauri had been offed by the mysterious Requiem.[134] Requiem interrupted the meeting before any arrangements could have been set up and revealed her true identity as Gamora just before murdering Quill with the Power Stone for attempting to prevent her from acquiring the other Infinity Stones.[133] Using the Time Stone, Strange reversed the murder as Requiem violently unleashed her power upon her teammates, overpowering both the Guardians and the Avengers. In possession of all the gems, Requiem reunited herself with the missing part of her soul within the Soul Stone.[135]

Requiem was greeted by Loki, who had been scheming against the Guardians for months to get the Stones as well, and the librarian Flowa. Using the Stones and having Loki and Flowa by her side, the tormented Requiem folded the universe in half, merging souls together and creating a Warp World in an attempt to tackle the soul eater that had corrupted the Soulword, Devondra.[136] To combat Requiem and Devondra, Loki assembled a team to look for the Warp World's Infinity Stones and Warlock.[137] Joining the alternate Phyla-Vell and Moondragon, Loki's team escaped Warp World and battled Requiem, delivering her powerless and defeated to Warlock.[138] The Guardians of the Galaxy Drax, Quill, Groot and Rocket reassembled in the Warp World, helping Loki and his team to stop Devondra. Warlock restored the stolen souls back to the regular universe, stopping Requiem's mad plan. Drax and his human soul, Arthur Douglas, had to stay in the Warp World to save both universes, while Phyla-Vell and Moondragon became interlopers from a divergent world. In the end, Warlock scattered the Infinity Stones and sent Gamora away to guide a revived Magus.[139]

Final Gauntlet[]

Eros assembled all super heroes in the galaxy to discuss the upcoming return of Thanos in another person's body. In a trap devised by the Goddess of Death Hela and Thanos' Black Order, who had seized Knowhere, the cosmic agents in the gathering were dragged into a black hole. With the Guardians' effective end, a taciturn Quill and a tough Groot aimlessly wandered space in the Ryder without Rocket. They were drafted to Thanos' former ship the Sanctuary when investigating Knowhere's disappearance alongside the Nova Corps. Upon arriving at the location of the reading, they discovered the hammer Stormbreaker pulling out the only survivors of the Black Order's attack, namely Beta Ray Bill the alternate reality versions of Phyla-Vell and Moondragon, and the deranged Rider. Quill refused to hand the rescued victims over to the Nova Corps upon demand, declaring that they were his new crew.[140]

The Rider left the team when Quill refused to attack Gamora as a potential host for Thanos. Instead, her joined Eros' Guardians of the Galaxy, a dark operation aimed at eliminating Gamora,[141] initially by targetting Nova. Tired of waiting for Quill to snap out of his apathetic state, Groot took up leadership of the Guardians and piloted the Ryder to Halfworld, where Gamora had gone after Rocket, so the Guardians could protect her.[142] After a brief confrontation, Groot convinced Gamora to come with the Guardians, who later encountered a beaten Nova. Eros' Guardians had followed him knowing that he would lead them to Gamora. A fight ensued between the two formations of the Guardians of the Galaxy, leading the Ryder to be damaged and Quill to get badly hurt.[143] Although he survived, Eros' team had been able to catch Gamora. With the help of Lockjaw, the Guardians went after her, where they discovered that Hela would make the resurrection of Thanos viable through Eros.[144] The two groups of Guardians of the Galaxy joined forces to end the Mad Titan, the Goddess of Death and the Black Order in Knowhere. Gamora finished Eros, ruining the revival of Thanos.[145]

The Guardians were contacted by J'son, who informed them the Nova Corps had been obliterated by the Universal Church of the Truth. When approaching the Church's mobile cathedral, the Guardians, except for Groot and Moondragon, were kidnapped by J'son, who revealed himself as the new Patriarch. The free Guardians recruited a degenerating Rocket to rescue their teammates.[146] Quill learned the Universal Church had custody over the missing cosmic heroes[147] and planned to terminate Earth to revive their messiah. Instead of the Magus, the Patriarch revived a horde of Destroyers or, more specifically, clones of Drax. Meanwhile, Rocket and the free Guardians enlisted the Magus for help.[148] As the Guardians reunited, the Magus tormented J'son. However, the Guardians were attacked by several heroes under the Church's mind control and defeated, which got Earth endangered.[149] Rocket managed to sabotage the temple's devices that guaranteed the brainwashing, while Moondragon projected the Guardians' memories about Drax into one of his clones. The Guardians were able to fend the Patriarch off and prevent him from killing Death, which allowed them to watch Rocket recover from his illness.[150]

Divided Guardians[]

Exposing the murderous actions of the blood-thirsty world-ravager Olympians, Nova interrupted the Guardians of the Galaxy's vacation in Halfworld to seek their aid. Although Gamora, Drax and Groot refused out of concern for the safety of the team, Quill, Rocket, and the alternate Phyla-Vell and Moondragon gladly assisted Nova behind their back. Joined by the eccentric Marvel Boy, the makeshift team embarked on a mission to destroy New Olympus.[151] In the process of completing the operation, the Guardians liberated the captive Olympian Hercules. Meanwhile, Quill had to manually detonate a black hole bomb to complete the mission. By sending the Olympians outside reality when hijacking New Olympus' dimensional rotor, Quill was left for dead.[152]

The Guardians of the Galaxy were devastated by Quill's demise, causing the team to split, with Gamora, Groot, Drax and the original Moondragon forming their own mercenary Guardians of the Galaxy.[153] The two teams quickly found themselves in opposite sides of a mission involving the planet-endangering resource mining operation of unscrupulous businessman and Rocket's enemy Castor Gnawbarque, with Gamora's team being hired by him and joined by the novice hero Prince of Power and the Halfworlder Blackjack O'Hare to take down their former allies.[154] The clash ended in a truce during which the two Moondragons merged into a single being and Gnawbarque got killed.[155]

With the galactic landscape suffering several changes, the Guardians of the Galaxy got involved in its politics as Marvel Boy and Nova participated in reunions for the Galactic Council. During a diplomatic conference, Emperor Stote of the Zn'rx and a Kree/Skrull Alliance operative were assassinated, with Marvel Boy being framed for the killing.[156] Rocket led an investigation alongside the Guardians and learned the Profiteer was behind the actions in order to destabilize the Galaxy by starting a Snarkwar and profit with weapons sales.[157]

The crisis was interrupted by news of Knull ravaging the universe with his symbiotes.[157] The Guardians of the Galaxy defended Spartax from the rampage, where they were reunited with Quill, the legendarily alive Star-Lord.[158] He had lived, unageing, in the other-dimensional world of Morinus for over a hundred years and had mastered his will until the dark Olympians found him and prompted him to return to his native reality to lure them away from his new home.[159] The Guardians came together to stand their ground in Daedalus 5 to oppose the vengeful gods.[160] In the aftermath of the team's victory, the Galactic Council decided to sanction the reformed Guardians of the Galaxy as protectors of the cosmos led by Nova in light of the increasing uncertainty of the galactic landscape, providing them with headquarters in the space station Proscenium.[161]

Their operation expanded as never before and they welcomed new operatives to their ranks, such as Kl'rt the Super Skrull and the Quasars, Wendell Vaughn and his partner who shared existence with him, Avril Kincaid. As per the Kree/Skrull Alliance's request, the Guardians responded to the Progenitors attacking the ruins of Hala and a group of heretic Skrull fire cultists on the mysteriously new "Rimworld". Alongside Emperor Hulkling and his consort Wiccan, the Guardians fended off the Progenitors, but were surprised by Doctor Doom.[162] When fighting Doom, who had transferred his mind to Hulkling, the Guardians managed to trap him inside Rocket's body using Moondragon's telepathy. Meanwhile, the other Guardians on the "Rimworld" realized the fire cultists had set base on was Ego the Living Planet. The emerging crisis led the Guardians of the Galaxy to welcome Doctor Doom to their ranks in order to combat the threat.[163] Soon, the Guardians came to know the nature of the ensuing threat as Ego was possessed by the Faltine lord Dormammu, the dread lord of the Dark Dimension.[164]

With the help of the Kree/Skrull Alliance, the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda and S.W.O.R.D., the Guardians fended off Dormammu's dark and endless wave of Mindless Ones in their attempts to conquer five different planets to use them as the points of a galaxy-sized pentagram to summon the entirety of the Dark Dimension.[165] Dormammu was ultimately defeated after a portion of Guardians helped Doctor Doom carry out a ritual to siphon the demon's powers into himself, giving the rest of the Guardians the opportunity to use the Retaliator Mark II to fire a giant bullet of Mysterium, an anti-magic metal, infused the Nova Force and Star-Lord's sun powers. The attack killed Ego and banished Dormammu to the Dark Dimension. Doctor Doom left without the Guardians learning he had planned Dormammu's annihilating invasion in order to have access to his powers. In the aftermath of the war, the Guardians of the Galaxy finally had the chance to enjoy a vacation together.[166]

Grootfall[]

For some time, the Guardians of the Galaxy inspirationally saved countless worlds effectively. Their competence caught the attention of Nebula, whose cyborg mind housed a Probability Engine she wished to put to good use. Her computations predicted a great threat to galactic peace deep in a planet. Rocket and Groot volunteered to investigate. There, they found the Granopy an ancestor to Groot, who triggered a transformation in him. Having devolved into Grootfall, Groot became an all-consuming asteroid cluster. His first destination was the Proscenium. Gamora deployed the entire might of the Guardians of the Galaxy to stop the threat, resulting in the demise of many of its operatives. In a desperate attempt, Quill sent the Proscenium itself against Grootfall, which caused its obliteration. The only survivors, Quill, Nebula, Gamora, Mantis, Drax, and Rocket escaped.[167] The group, except for Rocket, who built a haven-planet for survivors,[168] went from planet to planet to save their inhabitants from being assimilated by Grootfall.[169]
