Gungnir was an advanced helicarrier built by S.H.I.E.L.D. that has the capability of transforming into a fully sized weaponized robot. It was a secret covert project for which only high ranking members of S.H.I.E.L.D. were privy to, including Director Maria Hill and Nick Fury.

But Gungnir was hijacked by former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, the Iron Nail, after he gained the knowledge of its existence with the help of Dr. Mindbubble, a super-soldier from the Weapon Minus program with mind control abilities. They hoped to use Gungnir to start a conflict that would bring down S.H.I.E.L.D. and the United States permanently.[1]

Gungnir was being piloted by a mind controlled Captain America in an effort to have the world see with their own eyes that S.H.I.E.L.D cannot be trusted, but Cap was able to break the hold Mindbubble had on him and during the fight Mindbubble fell out of one of Gungnir's broken windows to his apparent death. As Cap got ahold of himself, this gave Shen enough time to shift Gungnir into its robot mode and have it attack what was left of the country of Nrosvekistan.[2]

As Gungnir tore Nrosvekistan to pieces, Commander Dugan authorized a laser attack from a S.H.I.E.L.D. satellite against Gungnir, even with S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel still onboard.

Captain America and the Iron Nail continued their struggle as the laser blast hit Gungnir, briefly incapacitating the Iron Nail. On Maria Hill's advice as she and Fury evacuated the robot, Captain America reached the core with the Iron Nail hot on his trail, Rogers aiming to destroy it.

Gungnir destroyed the S.H.I.E.L.D. satellite, preventing another laser shot, but Captain America, who had just had the Super-Soldier Serum drained out of his body and rendered him an old man, managed to throw his shield into the reactor, destroying it. Soon after, the robot crumbled, with the Iron Nail still inside and seemingly killed in the process.[3]
