History
Gwendolyne Stacy was the daughter of NYPD Captain George Stacy.[1] She was a student at Empire State University, and a classmate and friend to Harry Osborn, Peter Parker (secretly the superhero el Hombre Araña), "Flash" Thompson, and Mary Jane Watson. Foreign exchange student from Lichtenbad, Klaus Kruger, went to their class for a time and befriended Gwen and the others.[2] Gwen was also Peter Parker's girlfriend, unaware of his secret identity; Peter consider Gwen one of the two most important women in his life, along with his motherly aunt, nicknamed tía May.[3] As Peter worked part-time for the newspaper Clarín, Gwen visited the office from time to time, and met Peter's boss, editor J. Jonah Jameson.[4] At that time, the university, especially a faction of the students, faced racial prejudice against black students, with both Peter and Gwen being against this sign of racism.[5]
Gwen's father was killed by supervillain Doctor Octopus, who was fighting el Hombre Araña at that point.[6][7] Gwen blamed el Hombre Araña and started hating him, not knowing that Peter was under his mask.[8] Unwilling to live in the same city as el Hombre Araña, because she knew she'd be living to hate him, Gwen moved to London to live with her uncle Arthur. She was neverthless devastated because, as Peter was not moving with her, they'd have to end their relationship, even if they still loved each other. Peter, on his part, was unwilling to forfeit his superheroics, because he felt el Hombre Araña was needed to save lifes; but at the same time, believed that he could only marry Gwen and be happy if el Hombre Araña stopped being. Thus, Gwen vainly tried to use the distance to forget Peter, while Peter was losing his eagerness to live.[9] Four months after Gwen's move to London, Peter's tía May was so worried about Peter that, at her friend Ana Watson's suggestion, she wrote Gwen a letter, with Ana's help, to tell Gwen that Peter was still sad for her. Ana thought that Gwen may be motivated by knowing that, maybe to the point of moving back to New York and even marrying Peter.[10]
Meanwhile, Gwen travelled to New York to accompany her uncle, who still could not remember Gwen's boyfriend's name. Gwen was both eager and worried about a possible re-encounter with Peter.[10] However, she returned to London apparently without having met Peter this time.[9] Peter eventually was able to think of Gwen fondly, and not unhappily.[3]
Gwen later returned to New York City for good. She was attacked by the supervillain La Bestia and saved by el Hombre Araña - but still she reacted to el Hombre Araña with scorn, reprimands and insults. She however rejoined Peter happily,[11] and they soon were dating again, with Gwen accompanying Peter in a visit to May at the hospital.[12] At one point, however, Gwen swore to never speak to el Hombre Araña again.[13] Gwen retook her university studies and her friendship with Harry, "Flash" and Mary Jane; and, when Klaus Kruger offered his university friends to visit his country for tourism, Gwen went there and slept in the same room as Mary Jane. The visit was apparently interrupted by a revolution in Lichtenbad, that prompted Harry, "Flash" and Peter (and probably Gwen and Mary Jane) to go back to the States.[2]
Jameson prompted Peter to join him and fellow journalist Joseph Robertson in a sea trip, purportedly for the purpose of writing a feature report -although Jameson later revealed he was looking for a hidden treasure in a mysterious island. As Peter wanted to spend time with Gwen, Jameson offered to pay for Gwen joining the trip - and, in the process, training her in journalism so that she could contribute. During the expedition, the party was captured by primitive locals, and they tried to sacrifice Gwen to a giant.[4] They all survived the adventure and returned to New York, with both Peter and Gwen continuing their classes.[14]
Gwen and Peter went together to a conference that Professor Shiller gave at the University. Shiller advocated for people to come together in the face of a possible alien threat, and had the support of Gwen, but was criticized by other students. Soon after, just as Shiller had predicted, the aliens attempted to invade Earth and used their technology to blind Gwen, the Flash, and several people at the university. El Hombre Araña defeated the aliens, who left Earth and restored sight to those affected. Peter went to look for Gwen, and she, excited, kissed him when she saw him while Flash recovered.[5]
Gwen and Peter went to a masquerade ball at the University, she with a bandana on her head and he with a suit with a tie and mustache, a costume that she did not like because it made him look older. Gwen looked at a man dressed as el Hombre Araña, which she found distasteful. The fake Hombre Araña, who was actually the corrupt politician Roger Steves trying to retrieve a compromising document from Peter, took Gwen to the terrace to kidnap her and thus coerce Peter. When Peter tried to defend her, Steves' henchmen knocked him out, and both Peter and Gwen were tied up and locked in a lonely cabin. Steves threatened to throw acid in Gwen's face unless Peter handed over the document. Fortunately, the superhero Diabólico, who had been tracking that gang, barged in and attacked, causing Steves to spill the acid on his own face. The police arrested the criminals, and Gwen declared her admiration for Diabólico.[15]
Gwen maintained her studies and her relationship with Peter, while she frequently visited her uncle, now based in New York. On at least one occasion, Peter picked up Gwen at her uncle's house to accompany her. The next day, after an test at the University, Gwen went out with Peter in the park. Peter's spider-sense warned him of a threat, so he looked for a way to get away: As Gwen saw him turn pale, he claimed to feel unwell and proposed to go home to rest and, so that Aunt May wouldn't worry, Gwen stay to chat with her. So, while the two women were busy, Peter escaped through the window, defeated a villain, and returned without them noticing his absence.[16]
Peter being an honor student, he was recruited by his physics teacher, Koval, to help him with a project after class. Peter canceled a coffee and movie date with Gwen, and she was annoyed by her frequent stand-ups; when Peter apologized, she accepted a rescheduling.[17]
Peter promised Gwen a vacation together. Shortly thereafter, Diabólico contacted Peter (whose secret identity he knew) to warn him of the villainous Alfiler's plan to destroy el Hombre Araña using el Destructor robot as a weapon. Fiendish gave Peter a miniature sonic key that could supposedly control the Destructor, but he hadn't figured out how it worked; and urged Peter to abandon civilian life for him during the crisis. Peter was reluctant to do the latter because of the impact on Gwen. Then Diabólico offered to send Gwen an anonymous letter saying that el Alfiler had kidnapped Peter and that she should contact el Hombre Araña to save Peter (and that Gwen shouldn't contact the police); that way, she wouldn't notice the absence of her boyfriend. However, upon receiving the note from her, Gwen became so concerned about Peter that she not only broke her promise not to speak to el Hombre Araña, but she insisted on accompanying him on the mission, dangerous as it was. El Hombre Araña agreed to drive Gwen to a known lair of el Alfiler's, but el Alfiler's henchmen shot at the vehicle, causing it to explode; el Hombre Araña saved Gwen using his web, and she admitted to being scared. Once in the lair, the Destructor got in el Hombre Araña's way. Gwen fired a gun at the Destructor, with little effect. As el Hombre Araña confronted the Destructor, he ordered Gwen to protect herself, and she realized el Hombre Araña's bravery, ashamed of her hatred of him. Gwen's concern activated the sonic key, transmitting her concern and despair to the robot. Seeing the advantage, el Hombre Araña leapt at the robot, and Gwen's emotions of fear caused the Destructor to be destroyed, though the key was also shattered. El Hombre Araña supposedly left to look for Peter, but actually met with Diabólico; Diabólico disguised himself as el Hombre Araña while el Hombre Araña took off his costume, so that Gwen would see Peter and el Hombre Araña together without mistrust. But Gwen and el Hombre Araña were unaware that el Alfiler had cameras in the combat area, and she had seen the fight, concluding that el Hombre Araña loved that woman and that el Alfiler could use her in her plans.[13] Still, Gwen remain skeptic about el Hombre Araña.[8]
When a criminal impersonated el Hombre Araña, only to be defeated and unmasked by the real Hombre Araña, Peter rubbed in that he had always trusted el Hombre Araña and was friends with him, even if Gwen still disliked el Hombre Araña.[8]Personality
- While very much in love with Peter,[10] Gwen famously[13] hates el Hombre Araña,[8] because he blames el Hombre Araña for his father's death.[9] unaware that the later was Peter in disguise. Peter dreamed of marrying Gwen,[10] but he thought he could only do so if he stopped adventuring as el Hombre Araña, something he dared not do because his secret identity is needed to save lives.[9] At one point, Gwen swore to never speak to el Hombre Araña again, but she broke that promise when she thought Peter's life was in danger and only el Hombre Araña could save him. Although el Hombre Araña impressed Gwen with his bravery,[13] she still disliked him after that.[8]
- While Gwen often ditched her other friends to go out with Peter alone, she finds that Harry had a tendency to be angry (when Harry's anger was partly based on group plans being systematically cancelled).[16] Similarly, Gwen had an outburst of anger when Peter cancelled a date with her.[17]

Trivia
- On Earth-TRN911, there is no reason to think that Gwen Stacy suffered a violent death. Last thing we know, she continued her romance with Peter Parker, the story implying that it was leading to a happy wedding (although Peter was not eager to reveal his secret identity to her).
- Although Peter claims to be very much in love with Gwen, and she is sure he wouldn't change her for any other girl, he openly joked about being with actress Claudia Cardinale and, when Gwen purported Cardinale was more beautiful than she was, Peter did not argue her point.[5] In a time-travel adventure, Peter met and kissed a future historian named Karla, and went back to his time thinking that, while he loved Gwen, he may have also come to love Karla.[18] Peter also met a time-displaced cavewoman, (unnamed) fiancé of caveman chief Zor, and found her very attractive, thinking that her glance was similar to Gwen's;[19] this engaged woman believed she had fallen in love with Peter, but Peter apparently did not reciprocate her feelings.[20] Peter does not seem to be romantically interested in Mary Jane Watson.[21]
