History
As the Black Rider, Hatchet then went to the various ranches around Leadville demanding they sell to him cheaply, destroying those who stood in his way. When he confronted the Lathrop family, long standing allies of the Black Rider, both Jim and his youngest son Bobby Lathrop were instantly fooled by the disguise, but Marie, who was in love with the Black Rider saw through the disguise because the impostor did not recognize her. When Jim refused to sell his ranch, the phony Black Rider shot Jim and then took Marie as his prisoner. Thinking the real Black Rider was responsible, Bobby went to the medical office of Matthew Masters -- the Black Rider's alter-ego -- to avenge his father. Masters managed to convince Bobby that the Black Rider he encountered was an impostor and left to rescue Marie.[1]
The real Black Rider easily made short work of Hatchet Haines' gang, and then easily defeated Haines himself in a battle, sending him falling off a cliff to his death.[1]
