Synopsis for "The Nightmare Patrol"
The commanding officer of a platoon in the jungles of Vietnam encounters evidence of cannibalism being inflicted on dead soldiers from both sides of the conflict. At first, he thinks it is an act of psychological warfare by the enemy, then becomes convinced that the culprit is a soldier under his command with a flippant attitude towards death. After the unseen ghoul kills and partially eats a soldier on sentry duty, leaving only the soldier, a medic, and himself, he decides to take drastic steps against the supposed guilty party...

His murderous fantasies are so strong that they even become momentarily visible to a dentist and a psychiatrist he has sessions with. The tale ends with his proud proclamation that he will someday spring out in surprise to the reader and make good on his threats.
