Little is known of Hawk's history before he joined Killraven's band of Freeman. It is known that he trained as part of the Spartan school of gladiators to entertain Earth's Martian conquerors, but he escaped with Killraven before his first death match.

While traveling as one of the Freemen, Hawk was not an ideal companion. Although strong and a good fighter, he often complained about Killraven's leadership decisions and the conditions they lived under, and although he was boastful about his strength and abilities, he rarely took a prominent part in any battle. Ultimately, Hawk betrayed Killraven and the rest of his teammates when the genetically altered Martian Grok, who had tricked his way into the Freemen's company used his mind control to amplify Hawk's bitterness, insecurity and jealousy of Killraven. Grok caused Hawk to attack Killraven and Killraven was forced to kill Hawk. Killraven later killed Grok to avenge Hawk's death.

Hawk was trained in hand-to-hand combat and the use of various weapons.

Strength level
