History
The being that would come to be known as Hela began its life on a distant world manipulated by the Celestials. As part of their method of reproduction, the Celestials imbued Hela's world with an embryo and manipulated the genetics of its inhabitants to grant them the power to defend their world, and thus the embryo within it. Hela and her people eventually reached a point in their mutation where they lost all shape and definition, instead becoming defined by the perceptions of others.
Escaping their world at some point, they made their way to Earth, where they encountered the ancient Norse. The Norse, and in particular one among their number, a storyteller known as Donnerson, shaped Hela and the other Asgardians by believing them to be the gods of their myths come to Earth. Donnerson would merge with two of the Asgardians and assume the role of Odin.
It was then that Hela assumed her current form, as the goddess of the underworld. [1] [2]
Much of Hela's subsequent history presumably mirrors that of his Earth-616 counterpart.
Shortly before the arrival of the final host of Celestials, Loki learned the truth of their origins and attempted to warn his people. When none of them believed him, he instead sought the dead in Hela's realm. He managed to convince them that they were not in fact dead, and were only trapped in Hel because they believed they were. Hela and the other dead joined him in attacking the Celestials when they came to scour the Earth of all life. The Celestials used their powers to convince the Asgardians to once again believe that they were dead, causing them to return to Hel.
When the Celestials were defeated, Loki learned of Odin's part in deceiving them and eventually managed to convince Thor to aid him in bringing down Odin and freeing their people from his story. As a means of undermining Odin, Thor allowed himself to be sent to Hel. When there, he convinced Hela and the others that death no longer held sway over them, and that they were free to leave and return to Asgard.
Thor and Loki soon put their plans into place, and after attacking the city in a reenactment of Ragnarok, they managed to convince the Asgardians of the truth. When Odin's lies were revealed, Hela would briefly return to her previously undefined form alongside the other Asgardians, but she and the rest of her people ultimately chose to return to Odin and continue acting out his fantasies.[3] [2]Attributes
Powers
Hela is a member of an unknown alien race which has been manipulated by the Celestials. The natural evolution of any species created by the Celestials are three fold and happen over centuries of evolution: The first is an original mutation, based on some subconscious level by the individual, the second is that all members of that race have the same power, the third is a power that the beings lose all self definition and their appearance and abilities are at the whim of others belief in them.
Hela's evolution was such that it was at the third tier of mutation, as such her abilities and powers likely mirrored that of her Earth-616 counterpart, because that is what Odin believed her abilities should be. Further, this was reinforced by the belief of her fellow Asgardians and the population of Earth.See Also
