History

History[]

19th Century[]

In the 19th century, Hell's Kitchen was a working-class neighbourhood dominated by Irish immigrants who arrived during the Great Famine. It became overcrowded and impoverished, with tenement housing and harsh living conditions. The area was notorious for gang violence, with groups controlling the streets. Industrialisation brought factories and dock work, but labour disputes and crime were common. Hell's Kitchen had a reputation for lawlessness, setting the stage for its rough identity in the following century.

In the 1820's Tommy Murdock moved from Ireland and settled in the Kitchen. He joined the Roach Guards to fight the anti-immigrant Bowery Boys and later helped form the Dead Rabbits. In 1835, Tommy uncovered a dark secret beneath St. Matthew's Church. A Native American woman, Soena'hane'e, revealed the land was cursed, and Father Emmett had been sacrificing Irishmen to summon the demonic Blind One.[3] Chosen as the final offering, Tommy fought back despite being wounded. As Soena'hane'e battled the demon, Tommy destroyed the altar, killing Father Emmett and sealing the creature’s passage. The tomb collapsed, and Tommy perished, sacrificing himself to stop the Blind One from rising in Hell's Kitchen.[4] Tommy had a son, and his descendants rose to prominence in the area over the following century.[5]
