History
Hellnir was a demonic hammer created by the nascent King in Black known as Bedlam's Child in emulation of Thor's Mjolnir.[2] Formed from the Promethium bonded to Darkoth's skeleton, it was almost completely identical to its template in appearance and function, but was capable of unleashing bolts of hellfire instead of divine lightning.
Simply by imitating Thor, Bedlam's Child was able to bring the All-Father of Asgard to his knees and damage Mjolnir enough to make it bleed, forcing Thor to bond to the King in Black he believed to be Eddie Brock to even the odds. Once Bedlam's Child escaped by projecting its mind through time, "Eddie" claimed Hellnir for himself and was deemed worthy. Already suspicious, Thor confronted Eddie, who revealed himself as Meridius -- an evil future variant of Eddie who was using time-travel to ensure that the timeline from which he originated was the default future of Earth-616.
Meridius declared his intent to assimilate Hellnir into himself to grow more powerful, but Thor fired a point-blank Godblast at Meridius, forcing him to retreat through time. Hellnir melted into the symbiote ooze left behind by Meridius and Bedlam's Child, which oozed through cracks in Asgard's bedrock into the torture chamber of Donald Blake. Dripping into his eyes, the Promethium-augmented symbiote bonded to Blake and transformed him into the Serpent.[1]
Blake gained the ability to create and summon Hellnir, and through his power, he made it a true reflection and dark opposite of Mjolnir, twinning them through time and space. After Thor's quest and battle with the Utgard-Gods reached its climax, he was killed by Loki and his soul went to Vidbláinn. Blake met Thor's spirit and used Hellnir to attack him. Learning about the connection between Hellnir and Mjolnir, Thor snatched it from Blake, hitting the ground as he used to do to switch places with him, stealing Blake's soul to resurrect while Hellnir ended as a cane wielded by a statue of Thor's spirit.[3]Properties
Hellnir was crafted from Promethium, a demonic metal from the dark dimension of Limbo.[2] Made in emulation of Mjolnir, it possesses similar properties. Meridius implied that Hellnir possesses a worthiness enchantment, though he did not specify what traits would make him worthy.[1]
After being acquired by the Serpent, Hellnir was twinned through time and space with Mjolnir, becoming its dark opposite.[3]
- Hellfire Blast: Hellnir is able to fire bolts of hellfire powerful enough to injure and stun Thor,[1] who possessed the full might of the Power of the All-Father.[4]
- Weather Manipulation: After being twinned with Mjolnir by the Serpent, Hellnir became able to control and create storms. According to Blake, those storms can't be commanded by Thor.[3]
- Lightning Generation: Hellnir can fire and direct a dark lightning to strike.[3]
