History

Henry "Hank" Pym is a world famous scientist. He is the inventor of the Pym Particles and the robot Ultron.

Once, prior to the start of the series, he was a member of the Avengers under the superhero name Giant Man. During a battle with Whirlwind, the villain destroyed the foundations of a series of gas tanks and one of them threatened to collide with a building. To stop the tank, Dr. Pym had to grow much larger than he ever did before. He saved the building, but due to growing beyond his limits his cells were damaged, and he could never grow giant again without feeling immense pain. Pym had no other choice than to quit the team since he would only be a burden to them. This experience left him very bitter, though he deeply regretted that Wasp, who blamed herself for the incident since she failed to stop Whirlwind from doing what he did, was left with much guilt.

Pym is first seen when Iron Man decides to ask for his help to analyze the Dimension Sphere, which the Avengers took from Red Skull and hope to use to open a gate to the Dark Dimension, where dr. Nozomu Akatsuki is trapped in. He contacts the Avengers to tell them he has read Iron Man's report on the Dimension Sphere, but first wants to give it some more thought. He also comes across as rather arrogant, stating that Iron Man is wasting his time with kids and asking Wasp how it's like being in a DISK. This naturally offends the Avengers' partners. According to the Avengers, Hank is always like this.

Pym eventually accepted the offer and came to the Avengers' base in Japan. There, he and Iron Man, helped by Ultron, build a device that couuld harness the energy of the Dimension Sphere to open a gate to the Dark Dimension. To speed up the testing (at Iron Man's request), Pym gave Ultron an upgrade to make him more humanlike and give him the ability to learn. This turned out to be a great mistake however, since Ultron now realized his superiority and decided that he should rule mankind. He first sabotaged the Dimensional Gate device, forcing Pym to once more become Giant Man to save Akira from getting sucked into the gate. Ultron then locked everybody in the base and tried to crash the Stark Jet into it. Akira prevented Pym from risking his life by growing Giant again despite still being weakened from the last time. Thanks to Jessica, the Avengers were able to take down Ultron and avert the disaster. Pym however had to be hospitalized due to the strain he put on his body when he used his powers.

However, Ultron was not defeated yet. He had uploaded his mind into the computernetwork, and hacked the S.H.I.E.L.D. computer. Pym was asked to help the Avengers try and stop Ultron from gaining access to a military satellite weapon called Blue Javelin, but he soon collapsed again and had to be taken to the Helicarriers infirmary. However, when word that Ultron was a creation of Dr. Pym reached the World Security Council, they ordered Nick Fury to arrest Pym. Pym, who had used the infirmary’s computer terminal to listen into the conversation, panicked and stole a plane to escape from the Helicarrier. The Avengers and Maria Hill tried to reason with him, to no avail. And since she still felt guilty about what happened to Pym, Wasp (backed up by Jessica) helped him escape. The three of them fled to a lake house where Pym and the Avengers frequently used to retreat to back when he was still a member. The Avengers followed him there and tried to convince Pym that they would not let S.H.I.E.L.D. arrest him. Unfortunately, Fury had also send a squadron of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to the house. Upon seeing them, Pym truly felt betrayed and in a desperate attempt not to go to prison, he used his powers again and attacked the planes. Iron Man tried to reason with him, to no avail. Only when Pym accidently caused the lake house to partly collapse and endanger Jessica and Wasp did Pym see reason. He saved both of them from getting crushed by the rubble, but then passed out again and was once more hospitalized. By this point, Nick Fury had fortunately managed to blackmail the World Security Council into letting S.H.I.E.L.D. handle the situation, meaning that he wouldn't arrest Pym.

When Ultron started his ultimate plan, to subdue humanity to his rule with the help of his army of gigantic Omega Ultron bodies, Pym was asked to create a computer virus that could take out all Omega Ultron's at once. At first Pym was convinced he couldn't do it, but Nick Fury snapped him out of his depression, stating that his former teammates still believed in him and that Pym could still be a hero despite no longer being able to use his powers. Pym then succesfully created the virus. He used his powers once more to restrain one of the Omega Ultron's so that Wasp could inject the chip with the virus into the robot's CPU. The virus worked and all Omega Ultron's shut down, ending the threat. Afterwards, Pym made amends with the Avengers, and agreed for Akira to D-secure him in a DISK so that the DISK's healing system could repair his body. Now inside the DISK, Pym continued to work on the Dimensional Gate Device with the help of his new robot, Jocasta.

When Tony Stark was infected by the dark energies from the Dimension Sphere and fell into a coma, Pym tried to help him but found himself incapable of doing so. According to his diagnosis, Tony's vital signs were all okay but somehow Tony wouldn't wake up. Tony was eventually saved by Dr. Strange.[1]

After the Avengers managed to rescue Professor Akatsuki from Dormammu's influence, he build a new Biocode Installer and gave Nick Fury a complete biocode. Fury used this new power to permanently release all captured heroes from their DISks, including Giant Man.[2] Now free, Dr. Pym joined forces with Akatsuki and Tony Stark to build a weapon capable of defeating Dormammu and destroy the Dark Gate: 10 giant laser cannons powered by the Kree Mact.[3] When Dormammu learned about this plan, he and Loki attacked the Helicarrier with a squadron of Mindless Ones. Due to his condition, Pym at first did not participate in the fight to defend the Helicarrier. However, after their team of secondary heroes was crippled, Pym was forced to become Giant Man again to help fight off the invading hordes of Mindless Ones. When the attack was repelled, the cannons Pym had helped construct were succesfully used to destroy the gate to the Dark Dimension, and severely weaken Dormammu.[3]

However, Loki seized this opportunity to D-secure Dormammu and steal his powers for himself. Along with Black Widow and Hawkeye, Pym, once more as Giant Man, tried to help the Avengers fight Loki, but was defeated and rendered incapable of fighting.[4] Pym had his injuries treated in the helicarrier's infirmary. He was last seen among the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and other heroes after Loki was defeated.[4]
