Quote1 I don't have an answer for you, Henry. Certainly no guarantees. I can only say that that man is not you. His failures are not your failures. His sins are not yours. Quote2
Captain America (Steve Rogers)[src]

History

It was predetermined that Henry Pym and his wife Janet Van Dyne would become the superhero couple Giant-Man and Wasp through the utilization of Pym Particles, a distinctive set of subatomic particles that have the capacity to alter an individual's mass and size. Nevertheless, an intervention by the extradimensional time-traveler, the Maker, during his mission to systematically eradicate superheroes before they had the opportunity to emerge, irreversibly altered the course of their lives. The Maker would inflict irreversible brain damage upon Henry and would then take a Pym Generator from them to store in one of his numerous repositories as an artifact.

By 2024, Henry and Janet would be residing in New Jersey as pest exterminators under their own company, Pym Pest Control. In January, Henry would be granted a package from six months into the future by Tony Stark, in his quest to rectify the Maker's global experiment on the world. The package would contain a stealth suit and a sample of Pym Particles, along with files detailing the lives of their counterparts in Earth-616. Henry kept the package secret because he was afraid of who he was supposed to be.

Six months later, in June, the couple was called to a Hoboken restaurant to exterminate what appeared to be normal vermin, only to discover that the problem was actually an extended family of Moloids. The Pyms refused to exterminate them, as the Moloids were an intelligent species with culture and traditions, and left. As they drove their van, they were intercepted by Iron Lad, but Henry sped up and tried to escape, only to be stopped by Thor's Mjolnir. After meeting the Ultimates face to face and revealing the truth to Janet, they were suddenly attacked by Captain Britain, ruler of the east coast of the North American Union, along with an army of giants and his personal guard, the Black Crusade. In the ensuing battle, as Janet embraced her heroic identity as the Wasp to face her fear of the world, Henry held back until inspired by the words of Captain America. Embracing his destiny as Giant-Man, Henry grew in size and gained the upper hand in the battle by stomping his foot on their enemies. Subsequently, he was present at the Ultimates' headquarters, a clandestine Stane/Stark satellite, having become a full-fledged member of the superhuman resistance network.
